From the Principal New Attendance Requirements If your child is sick or absent, you are required to notify the school as soon as possible on the day of absence, by Flexibuzz, email or note. Notifying the school of your child’s absence either prior to, or on the day that they will be away, helps ensure the safety and wellbeing of children and will fulfil your legal responsibility. From the end of Term 2 2018, all Victorian government schools are required to contact parents/carers as soon as practicable on the same day of an unexplained student absence. If your child is absent on a particular day and you have not contacted the school to explain why, the absence will be marked as unexplained. This system also promotes daily school attendance. Going to school every day is the single most important part of your child’s education, they learn new things every day – missing school puts them behind. Contact details There are times when we will need to contact you, including on the day if your child is absent and you haven’t informed the school as to why. Do we have your most up to date contact details? If not, please contact the school on 9727 3466 so we can update our records. Please include parent/carers’ name, address, phone numbers, email address and emergency contact details. Please remember to contact the school if any of these details or your circumstances change. May I remind you that if your child is late you must personally sign them in at the office before they go to class. Departmental regulations state that children should not just sign themselves in, rather an adult should be filling in the late book adding reasons for the lateness. School officially starts at 9am and the teaching starts straight away. If your child misses the start of the lesson, even by just a few minutes, they have missed important instruction and it is very difficult for them to catch up. This can be quite stressful for your child and if they have anxiety even more so. Please make an effort to have your child at school on time every day. If you are having trouble getting your child to school on time please talk to your child’s teachers who may be able to give you helpful strategies to address this issue. In recognition of teacher workload and the importance of professional learning the Department of Education has allocated four Professional Practice Days to every teacher. So from time to time you will notice that our teachers will be replaced with relief teachers to pursue research, collaborate with other teachers or visit other schools to observe best practice. This is an excellent opportunity for teachers to keep abreast of current trends and plan for improvements in their practice. This will be my last newsletter for a while as I am taking some Long Service Leave. I will be away as of 10th May for a month, returning on the 8th June. While I am away my Assistant Principal, Janelle Wadsworth, will be taking over my responsibilities so I am confident that the school will be in capable hands. I will be thinking of you all while I am in sunny Spain!!

AFL Girls Gala Day On Monday 7th of May, we had 14 girls from years 5 and 6 participate in a Girls Gala Football day at Kilsyth. It involved the girls playing seven 20 minute matches against other schools. The girls had a wonderful day showing vast improvement as the day progressed. Sophie M and Briar K won the best 2 players for Chirnside Park, being presented with a medal on the day. I’d like to thank the Chum Creek girls for joining our team. Tim Norton and Lynn Francis

The 5-6s are really enjoying the STEAM activities that they complete every week.

This week they have been making ANZAC biscuits, building electronic buzz skill-testers with Mr Mayall, making friendship bracelets and building ping-pong ball catapults.

As you can see they had great fun.

More Camp Fun!! “Ow!” I cried as I built a big hut out of sticks, bark and rocks. It took my group lots of hard work to get it finished. We were in a group of three, then Jessica, Tessa and Alivia joined in with us. All together, we got it done. We won hut building because we didn’t get wet. We made the waterproof hut. Milly 3/4F “Whoosh!” went Micah on the long, awesome zip line. I was going to go next when I saw that Micah was finished. I stepped up onto the platform. I was excited and not nervous when suddenly, I found myself running off the slope on the wooden platform. It was epic! When the thrilling ride was over, I just wanted to do it again and again! – Jaylen 3/4F Wow! That is an amazing canoe dam. As Brielle and I got into the boat. We started paddling out to the middle of the dam. I started to rock the canoe boat from side to side, as Brielle starts to freak out! Then suddenly I accidentally rocked the boat way too hard and Brielle and I nearly fell out. My legs got soaking wet in the 4-degree water. What an amazing way to start camp. – Ava 3/4M “Splash!” goes the slight drizzle of rain as I sit under the hut that I built with my friends. “Ow!” I scream as I get many splinters on my body. “Wow!” I think to myself. “This water is freezing and this hut is not waterproof at all!” I miss camp – Alannah 3/4M

Library News Good News! We are going to run Book Club! Scholastic Australia provides a brochure or two every term with carefully chosen and levelled material by their team of experts. Every term the issues will be sent home with your children for you to choose a book or other product. If nothing appeals in one, there will probably be something in the next issue. You can pay online to Scholastic direct by debit or credit card or send your order to the school for us to process. The books will then come to the school once the issue has closed and will be given to your child or held for collection.
