Dear members,
Our busy new year is upon us. Piper in the Park is off to a great start andif any of you could attend and help by talking to some of the interestedpeople we meet along the way about our club it would be much appreciated. This is held every Sunday one half hour before sunset through April atBayfront Park, Sarasota.
Please note all the events listed in this newsletter. The club relies oneveryone’s participation in order to make these events successful. Thecommittee members work very hard to create a fun time in an enjoyableatmosphere.
By the time you read this we will have had our Frugal Nite which washeld February 11.
Our next highly anticipated event is the Thistle Ball to be held Saturday,March 30. This year it will be at StoneyBrook C.C. in Sarasota. I havebeen told invitations will be going out soon.
We are partnering with the Asolo Repertory Theatre to celebrate the 60th
anniversary of the installation of Scotland’s Dunfermline Opera House thathas become the Mertz Theatre. The Caledonian Club was instrumental inbringing the Opera House over from Scotland and contributed $25,000towards this.
The people of the Asolo are very happy with this collaboration and hopeall will take advantage of the evening’s festivities to take place on April 11.By now you have received the first “Save the Date” email announcing thiscollaboration. There will be updates to follow.
Regards,
Frank MacIntire, President

It Happens Every Spring! ( Not really . . . )
. . . but the Club’s Spring (or the “Season” asFloridians call it) is previewing the most activefour-month period in the Club’s history, as weassume responsibility for 30 different events forall Caledonians, their friends, our partners andthe public at large, prior to the end of April.
The Club kicked off the ‘season” January 6, 2019with its 3rd annual “Piper-in-the-Park” presentationwhich continues every Sunday evening (exceptEaster) through April’s end at Bayfront Park indowntown Sarasota, starting one/half hour before sundown—17 concerts free to the public! ChairsJoel and Jeanne Davies remind you to bring a member and a friend along!
In partnership with Selby Public Library, the Club presents a “Magical, Musical Tour Of Scotland” inthe remaining 3-parts, featuring famed Scottish balladier, ,
, and . Greeted by a Piper, these hour-long enduring features will be held at3:00pm the last Wednesdays of February, March, and April at Selby Library downtown—three Scottish“specials” free to all (we Scots like that)! Bill Wallace oversees. Again, bring a member and friendalong.
Frugal Nite (yes, that’s spelled correctly—as Scots, using just 4 letters = 20% savings—we Scotslike that too)! Chaired by Caryn Johnson with able assistance from Diane Kemp and Hubby Paul, this fun-filled evening was held February 11, at the Senior Friendship Center, in Sarasota. Hopey’all made it!
The 33rd annual “Thistle Ball” will be held March 30th at Stoneybrook Country Club under the directionof Mary Ellen McMahon and Frank MacIntire, featuring total Scottish color, sweet music from Heartand Soul, a special community honoree, and dancing your heart away! (More on the Ball in thisThistle!). As always, bring a member and a friend.
The annual “Kirken O’ The Tartan” is scheduled for Sunday morning, April 7, at the Church of thePalms. Denied the privilege of wearing or displaying their family plaids (tartans) the Scots found away! Everyone welcome!
“A Braw Wee Scottish Heritage Celebration” will carry the spotlight as the Club partners with theAsolo Repertory Theatre on April 11, highlighting the 60th anniversary of the opening of theDunfermline, Scotland Opera House becoming the mainstage of the Asolo Repertory Theatre–-now known as the Mertz Theatre—and the Caledonian Club’s participation in bringing it to Sarasota.Special ticket prices for our members and friends and special post-show reception at eveningperformance, sponsored by the Caledonian Club. (Additional info on your email invitation).
Then add the monthly “Ladies Luncheons,” directed by Dr. Mary Thompson, and, you all have anample sample of “Scottish doins” in which to be involved this spring of 2019!
(WHEW!)
I was visiting my DAUGHTERlast night when I asked if I couldborrow a newspaper.
she said. “
I can tell you this . . . that fly never knew what hit him.

Marianna Janz-Wecke, a recent addition to the Club, passedaway January 4, 2019, following surgery and an extendedperiod in ICU at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.
Born and raised in Germany, Marianna came to Sarasotaentering the real estate profession, as her son entered collegein the Orlando area. With other native Germans in Sarasota, she became interested in creating a German “sister city” to add to the eight sister citiesnow “twinned” with the city of Sarasota. Although that effort was delayed, she becamevery active in the Sister City Association of Sarasota, and in May, 2017, rose to thepresidency of that organization.
Marianna loving, spirited personality was infectious. She enjoyed both tap and ballroomdancing cycling and was a significant volunteer in Red Cross disaster programs. Mariannaleaves a host of friends and her husband Werner and sons Daniel and David.
