Academic Achievement Center Maxwell Library, Ground Floor
(508) 531 - 1214
What is a GPA?
• GPA = Grade Point Average
• A Grade Point Average is the average grade earned by a student, figured by dividing the grade points earned by the number of credits attempted. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/Grade+Point+Average
• Only the credits you earn at BSC will calculate into your BSC GPA. Transfer credits do not calculate into your BSC GPA but may go toward graduation.
Good GPA vs. Injured GPA Good GPA
• Good academic standing
• Above 2.0 • Able to
graduate (pending major requirements)
• Eligible for scholarships
• Not on academic probation
Injured GPA
• Under 2.0
• Probation
• Possible academic separation
• Limited to 13 credits per semester
• Repeat courses which cost $$$
Understanding Grades and Their Numerical Values
A = 4.0 B+ = 3.3 C+ = 2.3 D+ = 1.3 F=0.0
A- = 3.7 B = 3.0 C = 2.0 D = 1.0
B- = 2.7 C- = 1.7 D- = 0.7
In computing a semester GPA, grades are assigned the following numerical values:
Marks that don’t calculate
in the GPA: W, WA, I, S/U
The semester GPA is calculated by multiplying the grade numerical value
for each course by the number of credit hours each course is worth. The
resulting value is referred to as “Quality Points”. You can obtain your
“Quality Points” by logging into InfoBear and reviewing your Academic
Transcript.

taking information from your Academic Transcript and inserting it
into the GPA Calculator.
Academic Transcript Screen GPA Calculator Screen
Do Not Calculate Into GPA If you received the following grades in a course do not enter them into
the GPA Calculator screen since they have no quality points value.
•W = Withdrawal Grade
•WA = Walk Always/Withdrawal
•I = Incomplete Grade
•S = Satisfactory Grade
•U = Unsatisfactory Grade
A = 4.0 B+ = 3.3 C+ = 2.3 D+ = 1.3 F=0.0 A- = 3.7 B = 3.0 C = 2.0 D = 1.0
B- = 2.7 C- = 1.7 D- = 0.7
Do Calculate Into GPA
Don’t Forget About Repeat Courses
If you repeated a course then use the newest grade in the GPA
Calculator. The newest grade not the best grade is utilized when
calculating your GPA. So if you received a (C-) the first time and then
earned a (D+) as the repeat grade in the course then the (D+) should
be calculated into the GPA. However, if you earned a (C-) the first time
and then received a (A-) the second time then the (A-) is calculated
into the GPA because it is the newest grade.
Reviewing Your Academic Transcript
This screen will give you all the
information you will need to calculate
your GPA with the GPA Calculator.
You will need the Course, # of Credit
Hours and Grade. This is the
information you will need to insert
into the GPA Calculator on the other
screen. It is important to start with the
first semester you began at BSC and
put in every semester into the GPA
Calculator to accurately obtain your
current GPA. Remember if you
repeated a course only enter the
newest grade into the GPA Calculator
and do not enter the course twice.
Course # of Credit Hours Grade
Reviewing the GPA Calculator
Once you have entered the
information from your Academic
Transcript into the GPA
Calculator it will automatically
give you the Total # of Credits,
GPA, and Total Quality of
Points. A 2.0 GPA is good
academic standing at BSC.
