Wow. This year feels like it just rushed by. I still remember the beginning of this term, when I was just announced as Newsletter Chair. It feels like it was yesterday (as cliché as it sounds). I remember the excitement, the nervousness, and the fear of not living up to the standards of others. But with the help of this amazing board and all the wonderful people in the club, I can honestly say that I experienced ten times the excitement and happiness than anything else. excitement and happiness than anything else. You are all so amazing. Each and every one of you has helped to contribute so much to this club. With every service project that you went to, with every social, with every committee meeting you attended, you have helped make an impact on this club. The total hours that we completed as a club are only a number. Behind each hour is a story. Your story. Whether it was funny, sad, or happy, I hope that you will telltell it proudly and know that each of you is more than just a general member. As Newsletter Chair this year, I highly enjoyed reading all the articles that were sent it because it meant that people weren’t just going out to participate in events, they were willing to take the time out of their busy lives and share their experiences. With every picture that I saw from the events, it was amazing to see the difference that we made. Even better, it was great to see so many people enjoying themselves while puttingputting themselves out there to help make the world a better place. I am so proud of each and every one of you. Now, as this term is ending, I still feel the same excitement and nervousness, but the fear has subsided. I know that each one of you will continue to help make this club more amazing and wonderful than the year before it. So, for the last time, I hope you enjoy this issue of the Cal Kronicle.

Your Newsletter Chair, Jenny Vong2

President’s

Message

President of the 2013-2014 Year: Kay Kim

My last President's Message. Wow. How time flies.

As I sit here "studying" (aka writing this message and not working. :P), it's hard to fathom everything that has happened this past year. From executive board elections back in February 2013 to the last time I'll ring the bell at general meeting, my term as president has been an adventure - an adventureadventure that was treacherous and exhausting at times, but one that I wouldn't take back for anything.

(The following message gets kinda mushy and sentimental. Feel free to skip over. I won't be sad, kinda.)

I thank each and every one of you for being a part of my adventure. To the members who have been there since April 1, 2013 - thank you for putting up with me and my silly, embarrassing antics for so long; you all serve as the foundation for this amazing organization. To the new membersmembers who joined in the fall or the spring - thank you for choosing this organization; I hope you were able to have as great of an experience during your first year as I did when I was significantly younger.

To my board - words can't describe how incredibly thankful I am for each and every one of you. Your collective strength and unrelenting dedication has awed and inspired me through and through. I'm going to miss our silly board meetings and random stories on the GroupMe.

I would write more, but I'll save it for Spring Banquet. ;)

Have a good day!

Who needs a significant other when you have a Circle K member? We will give you roses, dance with you, sing for you, feed you, deliver gis, and serve the community. This is exactly how we lovingly spent our Valenne’s Day at Chaparral House, a care center for the elderly. Chaparral House is one of our connuous service projects, however on Valenne’s Day, we hoped to serve them in a different way than the usual which is doing arts and cras, and playing board games. On this day of love, we put on a Valenne’s Day Party for the residents , providing them with games, stories, music, food, food, and gis. The center was decorated with various hearts, streamers, and cupids while the seniors were adorned with red hats, feather boas, and flowered headbands. The food was romanc with strawberry and chocolate mousse, fresh strawberries, and decadent chocolates which we fed to the seniors who needed assistance. Entertainment included various acvies such as Valenne’s Day facts, guess the couple, serenades accompanied by the piano, and dancing. While there were many seniors at the event, there were those that were either immobile or busy so they wweren’t able to aend. Instead, we delivered paper roses to each room and were able to converse with everyone, including the staff. With these visits, the volunteers were able to learn more about the seniors as individuals. With the event ending, many seniors asked us when we were returning and encouraged us to come back. Valenne’s Day at Chaparral House was one of the most aended (by seniors) that the center has had and what beer way to spend this special day of love except giving and doing service with Circle K.

What’s so special about February 28th? What’s so significant of the number 11,000? February 28th is the last day for the Member Recognion Program thus the last day for recorded hours and 11,000 is the number of service hours that UC Berkeley Circle K has achieved. What beer way to celebrate the last day of service and the achievement of our service goal than to host a Service Party! The three service board members, Angela Apinyavat (Vice President of Service), Edison Xu (Projects Chair), and Mimi Ton (Single Service Chair) collaborated to provide the club with a variety of prprojects for this six hour service project that offered both members of the club and the division to parcipate in during Bale Royale and the Divisional Council Meeng. At the beginning of the Service Party, an hour was spent on planning science projects that we would be teaching the kids at LeConte Elementary School the following week, which turned out to be turning milk into stone. Aer this planning meeng, the room was divided into staons in which members were able to perform service catering their interests. One of the staons included cu ng tennis balls as provided by the Berkeley KiKiwanis Club. These cut tennis balls would be put on the feet of the tables and reduce noise and disrupons in classrooms. One of the other projects was making paper cranes for the elderly at Chaparral House. In total, we were able to fold around three hundred cranes to make into mobiles for the senior cizens to hang in their rooms at the elderly center. The last project was cu ng and sewing dolls to give to the very same seniors. Thus, the Service Party was able to interest people in different ways and while doing service, members were able to meet each other as well as people from our division. Thedivision. There’s no party like a Service Party!

Valentine’s Day SocialLiane Kuo

Who wouldn’t want to spend their lovely valennes day evening watching movies and eang candies with a bunch of amazing Circle K-ers? No one! On the night of February 14th, UC Berkeley Circle K had its Valenne's Day Social for members to relive their childhood by exchanging Valenne’s cards and to have fun. As the members arrived, we were each asked to make our own box for people to deliver the cards. Although not as artsy nor cray as some other members, I aempted to make an origami box, which turned out prey good! (At least none of the candies/cards fell out!) Then we all exchanged the cards that we prepared for the social. There were cute animal glasses cards, truth-or-dare cards, and even Jusn Bieber and One Direcon ones! But my personal favorite were the one with Mean Girls references, which were super funny and turned out to be super relevant because we all voted to watch mean girls at the social! Watching mean girls was as entertaining as usual, and its even more fun with Circle K-ers! Valennes Day Social was really fun and it is definitely recommended to anyone looking for some fun on Valennes Day next year!

Ice Skating SocialMichael Zhou

Fundraising Chair

What is cold, slippery, and super funny to watch people fall on? ICE. This year the lovely UC Berkeley Spirit & Social commiee planned an Ice Skang Social for our membership. One of the coolest things about this event however was that another organizaon, REACH, also had a planned ice skang social there and it was great interclub bonding. The event started out at Barrows, and even though it was drizzling/raining a ton of people showed up. The chair of the event, Claire Lee, gathered all of the people and got us allall to the Oakland Ice Rink safe and sound. There we strapped on our skates and embarked on the ice. My favorite part of the whole event was watching tons of people fall on their bus. Being on the ice was a really refreshing experience since I haven’t skated in a while. There were people that were really skilled like Claire, who showed everyone up with her axels and spins. There were also those who were very intent on learning how to be a pro like Edison Xu. In all the event was a great bonding experience for the club, bringingbringing the members together in the center of the ice rink for a great group picture.

Random, fun, and relaxing describes the best weekend getaway with CKI. This month, our Spirit&Social Chair, Philip Nguyen, planned a fun vacaon away from the hustle and bustle of Berkeley. Not only did I have a chance to hang out with old friends within the club, but I also got to bond with new ones as well. Our road trip to Santa Cruz was crazy. We grabbed some grub at In-n-Out and then made a quick stop at Walmart to buy a football and a frisbee. The minute we reached the beach house in Santa Cruz our jaws dropped at the beauty of the house. We ended the nignight with se ng ground rules and with the plans of waking up early. The next day we all woke up red and groggy, but excited to go down to the beach. The weather was chilly, but we sll had fun. Aerwards we Yelped an amazing Brazilian restaurant near the Santa Cruz Boardwalk. The food was amazingly delicious! Brazil Café specialized in their acai bowls, so many of us tried it along with some unique dishes. We all headed to the famous Boardwalk to play games, go on the rides, and wander around the fesvies. Some of us went into the Fright Walk and screamed our lungs off while others lost money playing games for prizes. From playing games, Philip won a small banana boy named Douglas, which he takes around with him everywhere he goes for good luck. Aer the beach, we went to get some ice cream at Penny’s Ice Cream. We went back to the retreat house to have taco night! The tacos filled our tummy with some taco-liciousness. Aerwards, we aempted to study and to get some “work” done on our mini vacaon; however, the coffee we got didn’t work, so we all ended up falling asleep at various places in the beach house. We woke up the next day, packed up, and got ready to head to San Jose for some good eats before we headed back to Berkeley.

One of our fantasc student-hosted workshop in the month of February was "Prezi with the Prez" where KAY KIM taught a mini-class on how to get creave with a new and innovave style of presentaon. A Prezi is an interacve presentaon soware that makes old, perfunctory slides (like PowerPoint) a thing of the past! She showed us how to manipulate text areas and zoom in/out of the soware. We even got creave and uploaded pictupictures of our own Circle-Kers as backgrounds and changed the color theme of the presentaon. One aendee, JASMINE PARK, even made her first Prezi at the workshop—way to go Jasmine! Special thanks to all the aendees and KAY for teaching us a valuable skill—and having a fun me while doing so!

Photoshop dun dun dun…opening the program can be a daunng task and actually understanding what all the tools do can be even more inmidang. However, our newsleer chair, Jenny Voong, made it seem as easy as pie[ology (where this arcle was wrien)]. Through her photoshop workshop, she taught us the basic ins-and-outs of photoshop such as using brushes, cu ng parts of the picture and applying different layers and filters. With Olaf as our canvas, we snipped, made clones and added snowflakes. The room was filled with “Waaaaoooooows” as we learned to do things we thougwe thought only experts could do. If you want to learn some basic Photoshop here:Learn how to change the background of a photo:1. Open a new photoshop file2. Place an image in the file3. Click on eraser tool and drag outa. New opons should appear. Click on the background eraser tool

Create a new layer using the toolbar in the lower right corner. First click on the new layer tab (second from the right) then click on the “create new fill or adjustment layer” tab (middle) and choose solid color, gradient, or por paern. Voila!

District Large Scale Service Project NorthClaire LeeOutstanding General Member

District Large Scale Service Project North, or DLSSP North, is an annual project hosted by the Cal-Nev-Ha District. This year’s project took place on Sunday, February 16th at North Natomas Community Park in Sacramento! Aer an hour drive, we all reached Sacramento and checked to get our name tags and group assignments. We were all split among 10 different “food” groups with names such as Adobo or Taco. Breakfast was provided; there was yogurt, bagels, and ororange juice. While we were waing for the actual event to begin, members of UC Berkeley Circle K swarmed the playground structure and interacted with other cls. The 10 groups were divided throughout different areas of the 35.5 acre park. Workers from the City of Sacramento Department of Parks and Recreaon were also present to teach us what to do. Volunteer acvies included tree and shrub pruning, weeding, and lier pick-up. We were given gloves, hoes, rrakes, garbage bags, tarps, power tools, and earplugs to beaufy the park. In the morning, most of us did weeding and pruning. Aer a sasfying Subway sandwich for lunch, we all switched tasks and moved to another secon of the park. Even though the park looked great before we were there, it looked even beer when we le!

Hello UC Berkeley! This is your 2013-2014 LTG speaking for the last me. It’s a biersweet feeling to have but the thing that overlooks my sadness is how well you all did this year. From disnguished posions to overall club awards, you did an amazing in my eyes. It was an amazing year and I was really glad I got to hop on and enjoy the ride as your LTG. To all you general members out there, I look forward to everything you guys are going to bring in the future. Our organizaon stems from the membemembers itself and without you guys, we would be nothing; so give yourselves a pat on the back! To the club, I just want to give you my utmost thanks as you guys welcomed me with open arms every me I visited. I know I wasn’t really the greatest LtG. I forgot a few of your names, I barely hung out with you, and the list goes on but you’re sll the friendliest and nicest people I have ever met. I’m really glad to have been your LTG and to me, it’s one of the greatest honors in my life. You guguys know how to make someone feel at home and I know for a fact that when I leave Golden Gate, you guys will be one thing I’ll really miss. Congratulate yourselves on a great year and move onto the next one because I know that from here on out you can only go higher!

Chinese New Year’s RunCherie Leung

Outstanding General Member On Sunday, February 9th, UC Berkeley Circle K celebrated the Lunar New Year by volunteering at San Francisco Chinatown’s annual Chinese New Year Run. Waking up at four in the morning to the sound of hard rain, Circle K-ers busily packed into cars and headed to San Francisco Chinatown for this excing event. During check-in at the YMCA Center, Berkeley Circle K was able to enjoy a nice hot cup of coffee with bagels while mingling with other Circle K clubs, including San Francisco State University, Diablo Valley College, and Sunset Division’s UC Santa Cruz. We were also able to see many people of all ages from families and community members, all pumped up and ready for the annual race. Later, volunteers were paired with partners staoned at specific street intersecons. There, we conducted traffic in the streets to make sure that all runners parcipang in the race were safe. Although it was raining hard during the race, being able to see all of the runners so excited and movated for the event made it more bearable. As volunteers, we led runners in the right direcon, answered any quesons, and cheered the runners on as they made their way to the finish line. It was a unique experience to say the least – conducng traffic in the pouring rain for a race celebrang the new Lunar Year. It was a wonderful divisional service project where UC Berkeley Circle K got to interact with other schools once again, while meeng new volunteers from other locaons as well. Doing service in the pouring rain so early in the morning really helped bond our club in a special way! It was definitely an experience to remember and one of the most significant divisional projects yet!

On February 28th, the Golden Gate Division had its final Divisional Council Meeng (DCM) for the term: our Bale Royale tournament- style service social – featuring our division’s finest gamers, servant leaders, and musical chair enthusiasts. Members from all over the division – San Francisco State University, Diablo Valley College, Los Medanos College, CSU East Bay, and UC Berkeley as well as guests from five other divisions. Aer the Service Party, the 2nd Annual Bale Royale tournament began, led by UC Berkeley Circle K’s Fundraising Chair, Michael Zhou. The tournament consisted of a plethora of games such as League of Legends, Super Smash Brothers Brawl, Taboo, a variety of card and board games, and charades; each game was fiercely fought on all sides for the crown. The victors of each game moved on to the ulmate challenge – a game of musical chairs – while all others were eliminated from the tournament. In this way all players had an equal shot to win the tournament for the ulmate prize – fame and glory. Aer an edge-of-your-seat game of musical chairs, John Moore – a past Circle K member and current Berkeley Kiwanian – emerged victorious and collected his trophy: a gold crown! Aer, the Lieutenant Governor Roswell Cua held a biersweet, final Golden Gate DCM. Club presidents and/or substutes gave their monthly reports and updates for the last me. Finally, the event culminated in a public viewing of the Social Media Webinar – held by the District Public Relaons Commiee, led by some of our very own members: Jerry Bao, Catherine Ho, Alan Perez, and Robert Rodriguez. Ulmately, this fantasc event combined all elements of Circle K from service to fellowship to leadership to fundraising. Entry to the event ($2) and cost for food ($4) combined to raise a significant amount of money for our District Fundraising Iniaves. In this way, the Bale Royale DCM was able to touch upon every single tenet of Circle K.

Kiwanis Takeover is when Circle K-ers TAKEOVER the Berkeley Kiwanis meeng on Tuesday! It was really fun and enjoyable since we have been preparing for it with an awesome American Themed dance. So many people came out, and a bunch of Circle K-ers baked goods and made goods to sell at the event to FUNdraise for for our DFIs.Many of the goods were auconed off, with of course Virginia's " First and Last Call", at really generous prices. We were able to raise so much money by having fun. There was a lot of dancing involved with lots of laughter throughout. The Kiwanians enjoyed our take over as we came in inially starng the meeng off with their annual singing and pledging to the American flag, that or course went along with our theme for the day. The Kiwanians genuinely loved our takeover and all of us enjoyed hosng it for them. One of the things I enjoyed most was actually dancing with the Kiwanians because they were really nice and seemed like it was a successful takeover. Definitely coming out to the next one, and everyone else should also!

You may know that our very own Circle K District Convenon is coming up, and you may know that Key Club also has an enormous District Convenon, but did you know that Kiwanis Internaonal has mulple convenons like these throughout the enre year? On March 1st, some of our members traveled to San Ramon to aend the Kiwanis Mid-Year Convenon. It was all very excing to see so many people part of Kiwanis Internaonal who are passionate about service and supporng their respecve Circle K and Key Clubs. We also got a chance to see our very own Berkeley Kiwanians represent what they accomplished. Our members were tasked with guiding aendees to the sign-up booth, the convenon hall, and the merchandise booth. At this last booth, some of our very own were asked to sell Kiwanis apparel that included K-faves such as “I’m Wild about Service,” “Serving the Children of the World,” and “Keep Calm, Serve On.” It was great to get a chance to meet and greet so many Kiwanians from around the area, hearing their perspecve on the club and just celebrang what their respecve clubs have accomplished this year. With Kiwanians, it is never a dull moment; they are always spunky, clever, and quick-wied in their conversaons, always pu ng smiles on our members faces. In addion, because the a re was semi-formal, we got a taste of what District Convenon would be like in a couple of weeks. Overall, it was great to see the Kiwanians, meet other Circle K-ers from around the area, and just help out where we could!
