that as great as it is to talk the talk, we must walk the walk. To do that, he said we need to get to know each other, to show courtesy to visiting Rotarians, and to be civil to our speakers and guests. Nolan Duck gave the invocation and noted that Big Jon Harris was back with us today. PP Karl von

Bieberstein led the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by “The Star Spangled Banner” and “God Bless America.” Will Reppeto introduced our visitors and

guests. Dax Seale introduced The Hub and the web advertisers; it is time

to renew ads in The Hub for the new year. PE Fred Brown asked that we all make our contributions

Pappas made twenty-eight Per-fect Attendance Awards, with the longest being Joe Walker at thirty years and Sam Miller at thirty-

eight years. Rather than receiving a certifi-cate this year, those with Perfect Attendance

Chris Short introduced our speaker today, John Williams, the President and CEO of the Lee Park and Arlington Hall Conservancy.

Lee Park is seventeen and a half acres on both sides of Turtle Creek Blvd. Prehistoric artifacts have been found on the site. Various na-tive American tribes used the area

and it was a part of the cattle drives. The first owners of the land were the Cole family, although it has not been developed for residences. In the late nineteenth century Oak Lawn was a small community. In 1909 Dallas bought the park, which was the farthest park north. In 1936 during the Texas Centennial, President Roosevelt dedicated the statue of Robert E. Lee which still stands in the park. The statue was com-missioned and paid for by the Dallas Southern Memorial Associa-tion. In 1939 Arlington Hall was built as a two-thirds replica of the Custis-Lee Mansion which is in Arlington Cemetery. In the 1960s and 70s Lee Park was the gathering point for the hippie movement. By the 1980’s Arlington Hall fell into disrepair. At that point the Lee Park and Arlington Hall Conservancy was formed. Since then the Hall has been restored and enlarged. It can be rented for events and has its own caterers. It is operated by a public private partnership between the Conservancy and the city of Dallas. New gardens of azaleas and ferns have been added, as well as the Allman Pavilion. Game courts and a children’s play area near the Katy Trail will be added soon. The east side of the park will be more family oriented.

THOUGHTS ON . . .

PoliticiansI have come to the conclusion that politics are too serious a matter to be left to the politi-cians ~ Charles De GaulleNinety percent of the politicians give the other ten percent a bad reputation.

~ Henry KissingerThe reason there are so few female politicians is that it is too much trouble to put makeup on two faces.

~ Maureen MurphyWhen the politicians complain that TV turns the proceedings into a circus, it should be made clear that the circus was already there, and that TV has merely demonstrated that not all the performers are well trained.
