The Event ……..

The Winter Garden suffered extensive damage following

the collapse of the World Trade Center towers on September 11, 2001.

The owner turned to Cesar Pelli & Associates, the original architect, for restoring the blg.

About The Restoration Project….

- Changing the entire character of the Winter Garden in a

short period of time.

- Creating good transitions between the new and the old details.

Duration: nine months.

Cost: 50 million dollars.

-Rendering Of The Winter Garden’s New Interior Was Used To Help in Selecting

Materials

1-Replacing the marble flooring using 60,000 square feet of tri-color Italian marble.

2-Replacing nearly 70 percent of the arched ceiling.

3-Replacing half of the grand staircase.

4-Redesign the celebrated glass dome.

5-Replacing sixteen 43-feet tall palm trees from Florida.

6-Replacing the ruined east facade by a sheer wall of “u” glass

that spans from floor to the ceiling and overlooks West Street.

7-Designing a new eastern entrance to the atrium instead of the destroyed bridge which was extending from the Winter Garden atrium connected Battery Park City to the World Trade Center.

1-Digitizing the original contract documents from the 1980s By:

Using them as an underlay to create CAD drawings.

Scanning them.

2-Using these drawings to verify key dimensions and struc-

4-Creating a variety of images of the Winter Garden as it underwent redesign.

It was reopened to the public on September 18, 2002

following an intensive yearlong restoration effort. Today the restoration is completed and the soaring glass

dome returned to its splendor.
