This is a course covering the basic use of CADSTAR Schematics. CADSTAR 11.0 will be used throughout the course. To install CADSTAR Schematics, double click on the executable for set-up and simply follow the instructions.

If you are seriously thinking about designing a schematic, you have made the right decision to come to me. You will find out in detail how you can make use of CADSTAR to capture a Schematic. I will start by showing you a hand drawn schematic design and transforming this to a professional schematic. The second step I will show you is how to create and add a component to your library.

Spend some time with me and you will learn a lot in a short time. It is not difficult to capture a schematic and to design a PCB, but if I was not clear enough, just click on the camera icon every time you come across it, and watch me (you will need an internet connection for this)!

• Introduction to CADSTAR Let me introduce CADSTAR to you. CADSTAR is an EDA design tool allowing you to draw a schematic design and transfer the design to a PCB layout environment. After an error-free transfer, CADSTAR helps to place and route your design. Routing is an integral part of a PCB design process. CADSTAR offers much flexibility in this area by providing manual, semi-automatic and fully automatic routing tools within the Embedded Route Editor or P.R.Editor XR (Place & Route Editor). The Embedded Route Editor has been designed in general for users who don’t use a PCB design tool regularly, and P.R.Editor is for the more advanced users who require more powerful solutions. For really advanced users (industry users) high-speed design features (such as lengthening, delay, impedance, cross-talk, overshoot, reflection etc.) can also be provided in a full standard package or as an optional add-on. The additional add-on’s that are available to you, include CADSTAR 3D which is a unique 3D verification tool for PCB design that provides a complete new concept of PCB Design in a 3D environment or the CADSTAR Variant Manager which enables you to generate variants of a 'master' design (included B.O.M’s and assembly drawings) without having to maintain separate files for each variant. I will guide you through the basic design flow of a Schematic design and through some very simple Schematic designs using CADSTAR. Try them and have fun! • The Basic Design Flow Library Usually you need to start off with a library and to ensure that all the parts (schematic

symbols & PCB footprints) that you will require are available in your library. But to complete the exercises in this DIY booklet you don’t need to worry about the library. Nevertheless if you are keen on learning more about the CADSTAR library you can try Chapter 2. Note: the library provided with CADSTAR Schematics contains all the parts essential for the SCM designs described in this 'Do-It-Yourself Book' and some examples of the on-line CADSTAR Exchange Library. More libraries are available on-line through CADSTAR Exchange. The ready-to-download-and-use parts contain all the information you require including manufacturers' part numbers. They are updated and expanded regularly with over 230,000 parts currently available. If the part required is not already available in these libraries, you can quickly and easily design your own parts using the supplied wizards and the Graphical Library Editor. Access to the on-line CADSTAR Exchange Library is available as part of the maintenance contract.

• Chapter 1 – Training 1 • Overview The main entry point into CADSTAR is the Design Editor. From this application you can access schematics and the library editor (or any other CADSTAR application). Once the application has been executed, it will appear as shown: Status Bar

• Prompt Area; this area will always indicate what CADSTAR is expecting you to select/input. • Redraw indicator; will turn red if the previous redraw was interrupted by pressing “Esc” button. • The Absolute Cursor Position • Relative Position; showing the distance moved during a command. Always shown in the Current

Units • Current Units; may be changed by either Right-Mouse-Click on the correct area of the status bar

(Shortcut menu) or Left-Mouse-Click (Units Dialog Box for complete control) • Current Grid; may be changed by either Right-Mouse-Click on the correct area of the status bar

• Starting a New Schematic and applying a Top - Down Methodology

This section will show the process of creating multi-sheet drawings using a hierarchical method. When starting a new schematic design it is always best to plan the Hierarchical sheet structure in advance. CADSTAR makes it easy to change the structure if required. a. Click on the Toolbar (File - New - Schematic Design) and choose one of the templates (I like

Form A4-euro). In this template I have already added a drawing border. The drawing border is a Documentation Symbol which is a symbol with no electrical properties that may be added to both your schematic and PCB designs for documentation purposes (you can create and add your company logo too).

To add a Documentation Symbol select Add Doc symbol, then select the preferred symbol from the library and add it to your design. Note: the drawing border is added to All Sheets at a scale of 1:1.

b. The next action is to save the file under a new name. Select File Save As

For the filename type for example train1.scm. c. If you don't like to work with a black background, you can also select in the toolbar a different

background colour d. To create or change the Hierarchical Sheet structure click on View Select Sheet

Shown in yellow is the default name of Sheet1.

By Clicking on Sheet1, the Rename button will be selectable and the Sheet name can be renamed to something more meaningful like ‘OVERVIEW’

• Adding Sheets using Hierarchical methods There are two ways to create a Hierarchical design; Top Down and Bottom Up. To help you to understand these methods there is some terminology that must be aware of:

• Parent: The Top Level Sheet • Child: A Lower Level Sheet that has a Parent • Orphan: A Lower Level Sheet that does not have a Parent • Bottom Up Design: A design structure where you create the Lower-level circuit first and then

add the Hierarchical Block to represent this circuit on a Top-level circuit. • Top Down Design: A design structure where you add a Hierarchical Block to the Top Level

sheet first and then create the circuit represented by the Hierarchical Block. Hierarchy is a method of indicating the presence of routine/simple circuits on top-level drawings, thus making them easier to read because they are not cluttered with unnecessary detail. These routine circuits are represented by Hierarchical blocks, which are linked to Lower-level sheets. These Lower-level sheets contain the actual circuits. This can be repeated for as many levels as required with blocks used at each level to represent the actual symbols in the sub circuit at the lower level:

1 In the example above, the Top Level Sheet contains an outline Block Diagram of the circuit. Each Block is an outline representing a circuit. Each Block is linked to a lower level circuit on a separate sheet. In the case of sheet 3 there is another level down, linked by four Blocks. Note: The whole design, consisting 7 separate sheets, is contained in one Schematic Design file.

We will be completing this design using a Top Down method. We start with a basic block at the Top Level – an overview.

a. Select the Shape Defaults Icon.

b. Set the Defaults dialog to draw a New Block with a Line Code Line 10 . Once set, select OK.

c. Select the Add Rectangle icon.

d. Set the Units to mm (using Left Mouse Click on the Status bar) and then set the Grid to 1mm.

Draw the 2 rectangular outlines Blocks as shown below.

e. The next step is to name the blocks by selecting

the block and clicking the Item Properties icon. Enter the name PROCESSOR and click OK.

The name will be added using a default text code. If the text size is too small select the text and click again the Item Properties icon. Now you can change the text code, choosing a larger one (for example; Verdana 120/120/4).

f. The other block should be named POWER SUPPLY. The names are always added in a default

position and may be moved to the centre of each block. Just Select the text and drag it to the preferred position.

g. You can change the colours of the blocks (or any other item) up to your preference.

Select in the menu bar Settings Colours , double click on Blocks and double click on Names, select Names and choose a preferred colour.

h. The next step is to create the actual circuit of the power supply. Double click on the Block outline or Block name (POWER SUPPLY) and select Create New Sheet and name the Sheet POWER SUPPLY. Select OK.

If you select View Select Sheet the dialog will display atop level sheet (OVERVIEW) and a lower level sheet (POWER SUPPLY). If you double click in the dialog on the POWER SUPPLY it will close the dialog and display the sheet ready for drawing.

i. You should make sure the units are Thou (Thousandth of an Inch) or mm by Setting Units or alternative by clicking on the units at the bottom of the CADSTAR window. Change the grid to 25 Thousands of an inch or 0.635mm.

Note: The movie shows how to change the units and grid in a CADSTAR PCB design, but exactly the same steps do apply for schematics using the same GUI.

j. When completed, save this schematic design . If you didn't manage to create the hierarchical structure, just open training1.scm before going to the next exercise.

c. Although you can draw a schematic by using generic symbols, before you can transfer to PCB

you must Part Allocate the schematics first. By adding the Part from the start, we can skip the Part Allocation and transfer straight to PCB design as needed. As all Parts to draw the power supply are already available in the library you can add the components by Part.

More libraries are available on-line through CADSTAR Exchange. The ready-to-download-and-

use parts contain all the information you require including manufacturers' part numbers. They are updated and expanded regularly with over 230,000 parts currently available. If a part required is not already available in these libraries, you can quickly and easily design your own parts using the supplied wizards and the Graphical Library Editor as described in Chapter 2. Access to the on-line CADSTAR Exchange Library is available as part of the maintenance contract.

• Adding Symbol by Part CADSTAR offers several ways to add a Symbol by Part. a. A fast and easy way to add Symbols by Part is by using a simple searcher through the

Workspace window. In the Workspace window click on the Libraries tab. A list of all the libraries is now displayed.

b. Proceed to search and place a capacitor onto the s

template by using the Workspace and search on and choose 10NF-20/80% SMD0805

c. Drag the capacitor from the Workspace window onto the

design template. The symbol is now attached to the cursor. After you have placed the symbol automatically a second symbol is attached to the cursor. Press [ESC] to finish.

d. The part is now still selected, to change the component

name click the Item Properties icon and change the name from C1 to C2.

e. A more advanced way to search and filter Parts you can select Add Part or Symbol .

f. Select the Part Name field and type for example the characters 1N. Note that the main list moved to the first part starting with these characters. Click on the part in the list to select it.

g. Select the Add button to add the symbol and place the component. A second symbol is

automatically attached to the cursor. Press Esc if you want to return to the dialog to select a different Part.

h. If you cannot easily find a Part select the Browse button. The advanced Library Searcher will

start automatically. This is a non-modal dialog box, i.e. it can remain on the screen at all times, being minimized and restored as required. Select Parts Library and select one or more Parts libraries you want to search. In the library searcher we can use multiple filters (e.g. filter on value and tolerance) restricting the displayed library items. These filters are at the top row of the table.

i. We are now going to search for a 10K resistor (R1 in the power supply circuit). Enter 10K in the Value cell then press or press right mouse button and select apply filters. Now the display is restricted only to those that match the entered parameters.

Select the Part 10K-1%-CRG0805 and press the Send Selection icon . If you have dual monitors the Library Searcher can remain open on one screen and the schematics design on

the other screen, increasing the viewable design area. If you have one monitor you can minimize the Library Searcher window.

• Highlight Nets Edit Highlight Net functions in the same manner as Select Net. When using Highlight Net the nets are not selected for editing, but displayed in (customizable) Highlight Colours By Net. The window looks the same as the Select Net window; only two colour buttons are added. The highlight colours can also be set within the Settings Colours dialog under the Net Highlights section.

• Pin Names/Numbers Visibility CADSTAR allows you to make pin names or numbers visible/invisible so you can see which pin is number 1 or 2 (useful for engineers to see). Select Tools Options Display from the menu and Enable/Disable Override Part Pin Names/Numbers Visibility. • Finding Component Pin Names/Numbers Components and Pin Names/Numbers can be located at any point using the Find Command in the Status Bar. This command is entered directly in the command line. To find a component, just enter “F” followed by a space, followed by the component name. To find a particular pin of a component, enter after the component name a “.” followed by the pin number or name (no spaces). The above example shows U5, pin 1 being located. The selected item will be shown centered on the display.

Access to the on-line CADSTAR Exchange Library is available as part of the maintenance contract. You can set or modify the paths to your libraries by going to Tools Options Library Paths. This series of tabbed dialogs provides access to the settings for various features of CADSTAR. You are able to set single or multiple library paths. This allows you to search through multiple libraries (such as central library, customer library and project library etc), and enables you to set up your library structure to work in a way that suits you. By setting each multiple library path, designers can access and utilize the library elements from each of the libraries without having to keep switching their library path.

If your local area network uses Microsoft TCP/IP protocol as part of the Network Neighborhood, the libraries can be located virtually anywhere.

Parts (there are several Parts libraries which are in the ASCII format) - which store the electrical information required by a part (e.g. Gate and Pin Swapping Rules, Pin Ide Specification, Power Rating, Value). A Part entry also specifies the S bol and represent the part on a design. You can create and edit parts using the Parts option on the Libraries menu.

• Library Versioning CADSTAR allows you to allocate a version number to a part, schematic - and documentation symbol and a PCB component. Automatic versioning can be enabled through a checkbox in the options dialog Tools Options System. When enabled, the version number will be incremented by 1 automatically whenever the part, symbol or component is saved after editing. Parts have an extra column in the library to alter the version number manually, Symbols and components have a field in their item properties dialog to modify the version number manually. There is a detailed change report on Library Reload so it's easy to see if Parts, PCB Components, Symbols and related attributes have been changed.
