  • B I R D I N G C A D I Z PR OV I N CEFORWARD

These notes are meant to be interactive so if you've downloaded them please let me know, even if you've no substantive comments to make or additions to suggest. If you've visited the area then do, please let me know where you went, what you saw and, if you write one, a copy of your trip report to post on my site (see below for contact details).

I wrote the first "edition" of these notes (in their current form) over five years ago and they have gradually evolved over that time into something far larger and detailed than I ever envisaged. Like Topsy they just grew! Throughout that period I have reacted to, and even anticipated, feedback from those to whom I sent the notes. Someone asked 'Why aren't there maps?' so bit-by-bit I drew maps first in monchrome, now in colour. I was tempted to simply use images from 'GoogleEarth', but worries about clarity and copyright meant I labouriously drew them, scanned them and then tidied them up in PaintShop. This took many hours of happy labour. Others wanted to know when they should go or the status of various species so I added extra details until I found I'd written almost 60,000 words, drawn over 60 maps and covered nearly eighty sites and sub-sites! The main section includes a handful of sites on, or just over, the border into Malaga and Seville (Grazalema & Lagunas de Lebrija). However, I've also added an appendix with seven sites further into Seville province. These sites have iconic birds Great Bustard, Pin-tailed & Black-bellied Sandgrouse, Roller, Rufous Bush Chat, etc. - difficult or impossible to see Cadiz province. Although distant, Spain's excellent motorway system makes them easily accessible (and some will be only a minor detour if you arrive via Seville airport). After much revision and tinkering these notes have now reached a fairly definitive form, but I plan to ammend and update them regularly 2-3 times a year to take into account new information or changes in status (see also my website).

Writing, and even more so researching these notes has been fun, but my biggest difficulty has been publicising the existence of my efforts to those wishing to visit the area. Initially, I did this via 'Bird Forum' (www.birdforum.net ) which was great for feedback, but, perhaps, didn't reach as many people as I'd have liked. In late 2012 I discovered the potential of ISSUU (www.issuu.com ) which not only allowed readers to browse my notes, but also download them for free. Another advantage was that I was able to upload much larger files allowing me to add photographs. This has meant many more uploads and views, but, it seems, a lot less feedback. I can be contacted via my website at http://birdingcadizprovince.weebly.com just click on 'Contact' on the dropdown menu. The webpage also gives updates, personal accounts and is a repository for trip reports (mine and that of others).

Finally, a good number of my correspondents have urged me to publish these notes in printed book form. This would certainly reach a larger public, but would involve even more time and, instead of being free, would only be available at substantial cost. This would undermine my intention to provide a free service to promote this fantastic area. The biggest stumbling block, however, would be that I could no longer update the notes several times a year and respond to the latest news and developments in the area. Besides, I am convinced that electronic preferably interactive site guides produced by enthusiasts - are the way forward. If you feel you really need a 'hard copy' then your local print shop should be able to produce a printed, spiral bound version for about the same price (10-15) that these notes would cost were I go down the publication route myself.

Although my policy is to make these notes freely available, but if you feel moved to make a contribution a suitable charity (as some have been) then please do so. I would hope that those using these notes to organise a professional tour (as some have done) would certainly do so. I suggest donations go to the SEO (www.seo.org ), the RSPB (www.rspb.org.uk ) or Birdlife International (www.birdlife.org ); please tell them the reason for the donation. I'd be very grateful if you could let me know too. I'm pretty self motivated working on this guide, but knowing I'd also raised some money for causes close to my heart would be a bonus! Finally, if you use them then please acknowledge the fact in your trip report (if you write) one.
