Welcome, friends, to the 2015 CAAE Winter Institute! We are fortunate to have your great spirit and collective insights for these two-and-a-half days of discovery and development.
I hope you’ll experience this Institute through a new sense of strategic inquiry and collegial debate. A special welcome to new members of CAAE, who enrich us all as they join this expert, international community of alumni-relations professionals.
This year, let’s seek to broaden understanding of the roles of the general alumni office or association. And, let’s return home inspired with new perspectives of the landscape of alumni relations: innovations in alumni networking and mentoring; untapped engagement potential in social media and new communities; and mastery of the partnerships we navigate everyday to serve both our colleges and universities, and our alumni.
We’ve reimagined this year’s meeting to incorporate the business matters of our association within a dynamic discussion. You’ll find that the substance of this 2015 Institute advances CAAE’s strategic plan at every step. I thank Colleen Meyer, J.T. Forbes and Kathy Bickel for developing a robust agenda with a knowledge-driven focus, including:
• Analysis of alumni engagement and its correlations to alumni philanthropy via CAAE’s first commissioned project, a interdisciplinary annotated bibliography completed by the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy;
• Demonstration of an improved CAAE website and new portal to serve our members and others in the alumni-relations field; and
• A keynote address about the implications of the inaugural report of the Gallup Purdue Index, which draws on interviews with 30,000 college graduates about the extent to which they have “great jobs” and are leading “great lives.”
You’ll see throughout the Institute how CAAE is fulfilling its strategic plan, making a qualitative difference in what we can do as members, and strengthening your roles as thought leaders in alumni relations.
And as you enjoy sunny Scottsdale, the friendships you’ll renew and develop will add to our already warm and rich community of practice. I’m delighted you are a part of it.

Member Programs andServices.Develop and implement a comprehensive membership approach that attracts the right members and creates value for them through high quality programs and services.
Provide cutting edge professional development programs and materials for members and member institutions, focusing on optimizing the Winter Institute, Summer Session/CASE Summit, Fellowship programs, and resulting White Papers. When appropriate, share with non-member alumni relations professionals.
Develop key strategic alliances with individuals and organizations to add diverse perspectives and enhance professional resource development and distribution, building on emerging relationships with CASE, Private College and University Alumni Directors (PCUAD), Encore.org, and other knowledge-driven enterprises related to our work.
Engage the CAAE membership meaningfullly in the work and program of our organization by developing a systematic means of recruiting, onboarding, involving, developing, recognizing, and retaining our membership.
FoundationalResearch.Build and establish a CAAE research center through which the work of alumni relations can be imbedded in empirical research, and in doing so position the Council as a reliable, and relied upon, leader in the development of alumni relations knowledge, science, trends, and information.
Develop the research center business and revenue model to include an effective method for accessing, analyzing, collecting, reporting, and storing content that is of high value members and member institutions.
Determine and prioritize research topics based on global trends and “future think,” and on member needs and interests.
Develop strategic alliances and partner with selected organizations to expand and integrate research opportunities.
Use the annual CAAE Census and other information and trends analysis to provide insights and direction regarding the future of alumni relations.
Facilitate collaborative research opportunities among member institutions with results that will be shared with other CAAE members and, where appropriate, with non-member alumni relations professionals.
BusinessModel.Implement new business, financial, and board governance models to support these goals and objectives.
Using best practices of financial management and business plan development, design a 5-year business plan supported by financial models and a case for investment.
Grow opportunities that further advance mission and business objectives.
Market test and validate. Leverage survey practices and benchmarking data.
Develop and enact a best practice board governance structure to lead the new CAAE organization and drive the success of this strategic plan.
Communications&Marketing.Implement a communications, marketing, and branding campaign that positions CAAE as a global venue for alumni relations leadership.
Develop a CAAE strategic marketing and branding process and plan that create global positioning, drive membership, articulate value and support the business model and case for investment.
Develop and implement an integrated and funded communications plan that supports the marketing and branding plans; measure and assess impact.

EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT SESSION SPEAKER SteveElderSenior Partner The Suddes Group
Steve Elder joined The Suddes Group as For Impact partner in 2012. Steve leads the higher education and health care areas of practice for the company.
Both a For Impact client and coach since 2004, Steve brings 30 years of for-impact organizational leadership experience, 25 of them in higher education. Before joining The Suddes Group, Steve was the Vice President for Advancement at Colorado College. At CC, he and his team transformed the development effort using the For Impact model and frameworks. As a result, CC brought in more than $300 million in commitments during his tenure, with $200 million coming in while he served as a vice-president.
Steve is both a natural and practiced coach, having coached his own teams at the University of Redlands and the University of Southern California, in addition to CC. His For Impact coaching clients have included Catholic Health Initiatives, Colorado Community College System Foundation, The Denver Scholarship Foundation, and Lewis and Clark Community College.
In 2012, Steve opened the For Impact/West site in Manitou Springs, Colorado, along with For Impact coaches Christi-Marie Butler, Robb Pike and Mike Gemm. Steve lives in Colorado Springs with his wife, Jane, and daughters Emily and Kit. When not at the For Impact/West offices or with a client, he can often be found riding his mountain bike in the Garden of the Gods and other local trails.
ALUMNI INSPIRATION SESSION Kai Kight
Kai creates impactful presentations that inspire individuals and organizations across the United States to become innovators in their field. Drawing from his experience as both an entrepreneur and composer, Kai is one of the most emotionally captivating corporate speakers available today. His mesmerizing original on-stage violin performance beautifully becomes a sonic metaphor for the core of his message, inspiring people to reach new heights in their work and lives by composing their own unique path.
A product of Stanford University’s creativity and innovation mecca, the d. School, Kai believes that innovations are found at the intersections of disciplines. This belief is seamlessly expressed through his work as a violinist and composer, where he cleverly blends classical technique with popular melodies and rhythms from today’s world. A two-time TED presenter, Kai has performed for thousands, including stints at the White House and the Great Wall of China!

CAAE IN ACTION SESSION SPEAKERSJeffersonCoombsExecutive Director Cal Alumni Association
Jefferson Coombs has been involved with helping Berkeley and its alumni from the moment he graduated. He went to work for CAA in 1989, immediately improving communications and linking members through events and charter clubs.
Coombs had been a staffer at CAA’s Lair of the Golden Bear as an undergrad and that drew him to other CAA endeavors. After he moved into advertising, he joined the board for the Young Alumni Council. He was a member of the CAA Board of Directors, and from 2005 to 2007 he served on the UC Board of Regents. Most recently, he chaired the 20th reunion of his class. On October 10, 2011, Coombs began his tenure as CAA’s Executive Director.
Ian MosleyIan Mosley Data Strategy
For over 20 years, Ian Mosley has been assisting clients in launching overall analytics strategies as well as fine-tuning existing ones.
His specialty is geodemographic segmentation – the methodologies, statistics, and database architecture/programming best practices that produce effective, timely results. Combining geography with demography, Ian understands how to segment people based on their location (such as neighbourhoods and retail locations) and their activities (such as transactions and preferences). The web abounds in BIG DATA, but it is these segmentation skills that imbue this data with any real value – by translating the data into focused, usable information
which your business can then execute.
Ian has developed a significant number of segmentation systems, including several national ones for Canada, U.S., Great Britain, Spain, Australia and Japan. He has also developed custom and boutique solutions for TD Mastercard, Transitions Optical Inc. (Canada and U.S.), Cineplex Entertainment LP, and Pitney Bowes Business Insight. This has involved taking pre-existing systems – including industry standard solutions such as Environics Analytics Group Ltd. PRIZM C2 and Pitney Bowes Software PSYTE® U.S. Advantage national segmentation systems – and leveraging and distilling their advantages to craft client-specific solutions.
Beyond his pronounced technical expertise, Ian also brings a strong understanding of context. Both are key to success. Ian appreciates the uniqueness of each business client. He recognizes the challenges and opportunities that arise in creating segments and implementing an actionable marketing system using your in-house resources and, if possible, your already existing data. Equally importantly, Ian recognizes and manages with deft care a by-product of working with marketing analytics: BIG DATA anxiety.

An internationally recognized expert on philanthropy, Dr. Osili frequently speaks across the country on issues related to national and international trends in philanthropy and has been quoted by national news media outlets such as The New York Times, the Chronicle of Philanthropy and Nonprofit Times. She has served as a member of several national and
international advisory groups, including the Social Science Research Council, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa and the United Nations Development Program. In 2006, she received the Stevenson Fellowship from the Nonprofit Academic Centers Council. In 2007, she was appointed as a fellow of the Networks Financial Institute.
Dr. Osili previously served as the Interim Director of Research and has been the Director of Research at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy since 2009. Dr. Osili is the current Chair of the Research Committee of the Women’s Philanthropy Institute, and is a member of the Research Committee of the Lake Institute for Faith and Giving. She leads the School’s extensive research program for its partners including Bank of America, United Way Worldwide, United Student Aid Funds, the Alban Institute, and National Collegiate Athletic Association. Dr. Osili provides guidance for the research for Giving USA, which is published by Giving USA Foundation. She also directs the School’s signature research project, the Center on Philanthropy Panel Study (COPPS). COPPS is largest and most comprehensive study of the philanthropy of American families over time, and is conducted in partnership with the University of Michigan’s Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID).
In addition to her appointment at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, Dr. Osili serves as Professor of Economics and Philanthropic Studies at Indiana University Purdue University, Indianapolis (IUPUI). She is also a member of the graduate school faculty at Indiana University. In 2007, she was a Visiting Associate Professor of Economics at Yale University.

She has served as a past or current board member for several nonprofit organizations, including the American Red Cross of Greater Indianapolis, the Immigrant Welcome Center, and is a member of the Board of Trustees of St. Richard’s School.

Armin Afsahi is UC San Diego’s associate vice chancellor for Alumni and Community Engagement. In this capacity, Afsahi oversees the following: alumni relations; annual giving and regional advancement; donor development programs including Chancellor’s Associates, Parents Council, ArtPower! and undergraduate scholarship fundraising programs; marketing and digital outreach; publication of the Triton magazine; campus-wide corporate relations and industry engagement; and,
the student career and professional development center. Armin also serves as chief alumni officer for the university and leads the UCSD Alumni Association and its Board of Directors, an organization serving more than 155,000 alumni worldwide at the forefront of the sciences, business, research, the arts, social innovation, and public service. Under Armin’s leadership, since 2007, alumni programs, annual giving and donor development at UC San Diego have grown dramatically, and the institution has witnessed unprecedented growth in alumni engagement and philanthropy, student giving, annual giving acquisition and donor retention, constituent advocacy and volunteerism. A proud UC San Diego alumnus from Revelle College, Armin is a seasoned advancement executive with more than 20 years of public and private sector experience in institutional advancement and strategic management. A long-standing San Diegan, Armin received a Bachelor of Arts degree in communication from UC San Diego in 1990 and a Master’s degree in business administration from the University of San Diego in 1997. Sean is global director of alumni relations at McKinsey & Company, Inc., where for the past seven years he has led the management consultancy’s program to engage and strengthen its network of more than 30,000 former consultants in 100 countries around the world. Sean’s current responsibilities span all areas of alumni community engagement. He has also led several large scale alumni conferences in the US and Europe for McKinsey, as well as nearly 150 web-based alumni knowledge events, directly engaging thousands of alumni each year.

Brandon Busteed leads Gallup’s education work. His career spans a wide range of important work in education as an educational entrepreneur, speaker, writer, and university trustee. Brandon’s work integrates Gallup’s research and science on talent selection, strengths, engagement, and well-being to improve student success, teacher effectiveness, and educational outcomes. His mission is to create a national movement to measure the educational outcomes that matter most, connect education to jobs and job creation, and promote a paradigm shift from knowledge mastery to emotional engagement in education.
With Brandon’s leadership, Gallup Education released several ground-breaking Gallup studies in 2014. These include State of America’s Schools: The
Path to Winning Again in Education, which explores student and teacher engagement in public schools, and Great Jobs, Great Lives: The 2014 GallupPurdue Index Report, a comprehensive, nationally representative study of U.S. college graduates that focuses on their long-term outcomes in work and life.
Brandon has founded two companies and one nonprofit organization as a social entrepreneur. He is the founder and former CEO of Outside The Classroom, a company that pioneered adaptive online education in alcohol abuse prevention. A three-year, 30-school, national study funded by the National Institutes of Health showed that AlcoholEdu — the organization’s flagship alcohol-abuse prevention program — was effective in reducing binge drinking, drunk driving, and sexual assaults. More than 5 million students have participated in the program. The company was acquired by EverFi in 2011.
An internationally known speaker and author on education policy, Brandon has written frequently for The Chronicle of Higher Education, Trusteeship Magazine, The Huffington Post, and other publications. His work has been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, and USA Today and on NPR and the NBC News “TODAY” show, among others.
Brandon received his bachelor’s degree in public policy from Duke University. He is a trustee emeritus of Duke and has served on the Board of Visitors of the Sanford School of Public Policy. A former twosport NCAA Division 1 athlete at Duke, Brandon continues to hone his competitive drive
as an avid CrossFitter. He lives in Vienna, Virginia, with his wife, Deanna, and two children, Anabelle and Harrison.

Steve Hall currently serves as the Vice President for Alumni Relations at Boston University, one of the world’s largest private research universities. In this capacity, Hall has responsibility for alumni relations, annual giving, advancement communications, and stewardship and donor relations for more than 300,000 BU alumni world-wide.
Hall is a member of the senior leadership team responsible for designing and executing the $1 billion Choose to be Great fund-raising campaign for BU, the university’s first comprehensive campaign. Under his leadership, alumni engagement has increased six-fold to more than 900 events and meetings each year, attracting more than 50,000 attendees. The alumni participation giving rate has increased 3 percentage points since the campaign began in 2010.
Prior to joining BU in 2007, he served for 12 years as CEO and president of the Houston Alumni Organization of the University of Houston. His previous experience includes serving as Vice President for Major Gifts at the Washington State University Foundation, where he oversaw college and school development staff, and in numerous roles in development and alumni relations at the University of Houston and University of Houston System.
A CASE member for 34 years and a recipient of the Crystal Apple Award, Hall is a frequent faculty member at conferences, including the Summer Institute in Alumni Relations, District I and District IV conferences, International Assemblies and Summits. He is also a frequent contributor to CASE publications. In 2012 and 2013 he chaired the Senior Institute in Alumni Relations. Programs he leads have received numerous CASE Circle of Excellence Grand Gold and Gold awards.
He served as Vice Chair of the Commission on Alumni Relations and as a member of the Commission on Philanthropy. In 2007-2008 he served as president of the Council of Alumni Association Executives and in 2005 and 2007 chaired the Alumni Professionals of Texas conference. Hall has served on both the CASE District I and District IV Boards.
At the University of Houston, Hall led the creation of a 300 member alumni legislative advocacy effort. He has testified before the Senate of the State of Texas on issues related to higher education and in 2013 was an invited panelist for the inaugural Massachusetts Public Higher Education Statewide Board of Trustees Conference.

Brandon Buzbee is the Senior Director of Industry Engagement & Regional Advancement at UC San Diego. He has been a leader in the full integration of the Career Services into Alumni Relations at the University. As an alumnus of UC San Diego, he brings a passion for challenging the status quo and fostering a culture of innovation.
During his four years at the UC San Diego, Buzbee has led efforts to conduct more than 4,000 face-to-face meetings with alumni throughout the country, helped move the alumni association from a dues-paying model toward a giving-societies model and worked to integrate solid-data analytics toward fostering stronger relationships with alumni. Most recently he has taken the lead to integrate alumni more deeply into the success and professional mobility of the student body through a re-envisioned employer outreach program.

Stephanie Anderson is the assistant director of alumni engagement for the Mizzou Alumni Association, a membership-based organization that serves the 290,000 alumni of the University of Missouri.
Anderson’s passion for Mizzou began as a student and continues as an alumni relations professional. She joined the Mizzou Alumni Association staff in 2010 as a coordinator, and moved to her current position in 2013. She is part of the alumni engagement team responsible for more than 120 regional, constituent and affinity-based groups. Specifically, Anderson collaborates with volunteers and campus partners to increase engagement efforts the Mizzou’s largest alumni market, St. Louis.
Anderson graduated from Mizzou in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in business, and again in 2010 with her MBA.

Dave Schmidt has been working for the Duke Alumni Association since the fall of 2013, having graduated from Duke with a B.A. in Spanish and European Studies and a minor in Political Science in 2007. Prior to working at the DAA, Dave was an admissions officer for Duke’s Undergraduate Admissions Office for three years, and served as Duke’s Schondorf Exchange Fellow in Bavaria in the 2007-08 school year.
Since rejoining Duke, Dave’s work in Regional Engagement has focused on those Duke alumni living along the Eastern seaboard and upper Midwest, as well as Duke alumni in Latin America and Africa.

tThe CAAE Board of Directors met for their annual retreat November 3-4, 2014, in Dallas, Texas. During the meeting, the board reviewed progress on the strategic plan and prioritized activities for the current fiscal year. The board also reviewed the final financial statements for the fiscal year ending August 31, 2014, and approved the auditor’s review.
In addition to the actions listed above, the board: • Discussed the development of a comprehensive brand strategy to
reinforce and redefine the organization’s value proposition.
• Explored the creation of an outreach plan to institutional leaders, potential new members, and potential partner organizations and companies.
• Changed the name of the “Annual Member Survey” to the “Annual Census” to more accurately describe the project and its outcomes.
• Agreed to engage Ian Mosely, a data analyst based in Toronto, to review census data over a five-year period to determine trends and organizational clusters that may help inform future research.

alumni relations professionals per our strategic plan? Grafton responded that a plan is not in place at this time but is evolving.
• Grafton reviewed a new two-year agreement with CASE; cost will increase from $40,000 to $55,000 annually so CASE can add additional staffing to support CAAE. Board is very pleased with the CASE partnership.
• Sterly Wilder (Duke) shared information about enhancing CAAE marketing and communications including a new website and member recruitment materials.
• Barbara Dick (Toronto) shared the functionality of the new CASE toolkit and what it means for the CAAE Survey.
n Survey will open in September and member data will be due by December. n Toolkit webinars will be offered to members beginning February 2015. n CAAE will continue to offer a printed version and it will be available at the winter institute.

IV. ResearchAgenda–PaulaBonner(Wisconsin) • Update on research project with the Lilly School
at Indiana. • Preliminary information from the scan of research looks
good.
V. FinancialReport–JeffJohnson(IowaState) • Projected budget surplus of $41,132 for FY14. • Board has approved a $40,000 contract to overhaul the
CAAE website. • Johnson provided highlights of the FY15 budget. • Tax return and financial review is being performed. CAAE
will continue to work with Allison Hickman, Georgia Tech for financial reporting.
VI. BusinessItems • Bylaws changes were reviewed with the membership.
Joe Irwin (Georgia Tech) moved approval, Armin Afsahi (UC-San Diego) seconded. Motioned carried.
