Srinivasan appointed chairman of ICC

Narayanaswami Srinivasan been appointed as the chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Earlier, the Supreme Court hadbarred Srinivasan from officiating as the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in the wake of the Indian Premier League betting and match-fixing scandal. The new ICC executive committee will be headed by Cricket Australia chairman Wally Edwards whereas the finance and commercial affairs committee will be headed by England's Giles Clarke.

Sania Mirza is into top-five of WTA rankings

For the first time in her career, the Indian tennis player Sania Mirza has been ranked into the top-five of the doubles WTA rankings. Though the performance of Sania and Zimbabwean partner Cara Black at the Wimbledon championships was not up to the mark but then also they managed to get 130 ranking points. These points placed Sania at the fifth place above Slovenia's Katarina Srebotnik. For the past some time, Sania has not been performing well because of her wrist injury. On the other hand in ATP ranking, Somdev Devvarman is now at 135 place after a drop of 10 places. Leander Paes is still at number 13 in mens double and Rohan Bopanna is at 20th place after a drop of three places.

Indian paddlers win silver medal in men's doubles

Indian paddlers Achanta Sharath Kamal and Anthony Amalraj lost a match to Singapore's Hu Li and Ning Gao to win silver medal in the mens doubles in the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The match was played at Scotstoun Sports Campus. The bronze medal was also won by Zi Yang and Jian Zhan, another pair of players from Singapore.

Bindra wins gold medal and declares his signing off from Commonwealth Games

Ace shooter Abhinav Bindra won a gold medal in Commonwealth Games in men's 10m air rifle. Bindra played his fifth and last Commonwealth Games. He made the announcement about his retirement on the eve of the event. Bindra is the only player in India to win Olympic gold medal. Apart from this, Malaika Goel fired a silver and lifter Santoshi Mats won bronze medal. Indias total medal tally reached 10 with three gold, four silver and three bronze. India is at fourth position in the medal count. England is at first position (10-8-7), Australia at second (7-6-9) and Scotland at third (6-3-4), as per media report.

No Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Awards; 15 selected for Arjuna Award

This will be for the first time in the last two decades that no sportsperson will be honoured with Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 2014. A panel that was to decide the names of the players for different awards has only decided 15 names for the Arjuna Awards. Cricketer R Ashwin, shuttler V Diju, golfer Anirban Lahiri, shooter Heena Sidhu and athlete Tintu Luka are few of the names selected for Arjuna Awards.

Cilic is New US Open Champion

25-year-old Croatian Marin Cilic wins US Open Tennis title for the first time. He is the second Croatian after Goran Ivanisevic to win a major Grand Slam title. Goran Ivanisevic, who is also the coach of Martin, won Wimbledon title back in 2001. Marin Cilic defeated Kei Nishikori in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, 6-3. During this 28th Grand Slam event, Cilic fired 38 winners, 17 aces, and 9 break points.

Dhoni Becomes Most Successful ODI Captain

After the emphatic win of Indian Cricket Team, Indian Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has become the most successful Indian ODI captain. The visitors beat England by 9 wickets in the fourth One-Day International at Birmingham. Dhoni thanked the former as well as present team for helping him achieve this feat. Indian shuttler Sindhu wins bronze medal

Indian shuttler PV Sindhu again had to satisfied with a bronze medal at the World Badminton Championship. Carolina Marin of Spain defeated her at the semifinal at the Ballerup Super Arena by 17-21, 15-21. With this bronze medal; 11th seeded player Sindhu failed to be the first Indian women shuttler to reach the finals of the World Championship. Sindhu also won bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
