Plan your objectives. Have a think about what you want to get out of interacting with these companies and their representatives at the fair. Are you lookingfor a graduate role, placement, work experience opportunity or just simply some networking?
Prepare some questions that you want to ask each company, based on your objectives. Make sure you don’t just ask “What do you do?” as they will expectyou to know that already!
Turn up as early as you can and allow plenty of time to speak to your target organisations and then spend some time visiting the other stands too (you maybe impressed by an organisation you had previously discounted).
Practise – a way of getting rid of your nerves is to try out your questions on a company youhaven’t targeted. This way you’ll be warmed up and ready to speak to your target organisations.
Offer your CV. Have copies of your most up-to-date CV to hand, but don’t be put off if employers won’t accept one and/or stillask you to look at their website and apply online. Whatever way they prefer to be contacted is fine by you.
Engage on social media. After the event follow them on social media. You could even tweet something you’ve learnt fromthem or your pleasure at meeting them. Make sure your social media profiles are professional first though!
Review the experience. How did you find it? Awkward, encouraging, surprising? It might beworth keeping notes on your interactions, jotting down names and dates etc. This information will help when it comes to following up but also give you valuableinsight when preparing for and attending your next career fair.
Follow up with the companies that interested you by researching them further and making yourself aware of their recruitment processes and anyupcoming application deadlines.
Avoid walking around the fair in a large group. The exhibitor may not realise that you are interested in them, and you could miss out.
Smile - enthusiasm is infectious! Be purposeful and confident, but alsopolite and courteous.
