C2PRISM: Communication and Computation – Promoting Research Integration in Science and

MathematicsScience Park HS Chem --- 2007/2008

Robert Fellman – NJIT C2PRISM Fellow 2007

Carole Bucher – Science Park Sponsor Teacher

Who is Mr. Fellman?

Education:– BSc (Chem) Stevens Institute of Technology --- 1964– MSc (Chem) Rutgers University --- 1974– MSc (Env. Engineering) NJ Institute of Technology --- 1978– Presently: PhD Candidate at NJIT (Env Eng) --- 2007

Experience:– Worked as an Engineer and Project Manager on Chemical and

Radioactive Hazardous Waste Clean-up Projects in US and Overseas ~ 30 years.

– Peace Corps Volunteer in Ghana West Africa (Chemistry and Math Teacher)

What Has Mr. Fellman Done?

Environmental Engineer on Nuclear and Hazardous Waste Sites.

Radon Control Atop a Radwaste Tank

Radwaste Tank and Extraction Bridge

What has He Done?

Chemistry Teacher in Ghana West Africa

What Will Mr Fellman Be Doing at NJIT?

PhD Candidate – Environmental Engineering at NJIT Topic:

“Use of Life Cycle Environmental Analysis to Investigate the Impacts of

the Production of Bio-Diesel Fuel from Palm-Oil in

Ghana, West Africa”

NJIT Student Center

What is His Research all About?

There is a big worldwide demand for “Eco friendly” fuels.

Palm oil is great source of natural, renewable oil to make Bio-diesel.

Ghana has a fine climate for growing oil palm trees

Bio-Diesel Sounds Like a Great Idea – So What’s the Problem?

Industrial Development in Ghana – Air and Water Pollution – New Problems

Growing Oil Palms for Bio-diesel takes farmland away from food crops. Palm Oil is Food in Ghana

So How Do We Figure Out What is Best? Life Cycle Environmental Analysis

Looks at Processes from “Cradle to Grave”

Tries to Consider all Impacts: To Ghana and The World

It’s All About BalanceAll Four of These Things Are Important

Fueling up the Jetta

What Will Mr Fellman Be Doing in this Class?

He has experience in Chemistry, Safety, Radioactive and Hazardous Waste Control. He is going to try to bring some interesting Chemistry-related problems and exercises from this experience and from his bio-diesel research into the Chemistry class here at Science Park High School.

Finally, There’s Always Time for Some Humor

Would You Stay Here?We know it’s good Fuel --- But is Bio-diesel edible?
