From the Commander

Fellow Cobras,

It has been my great pleasure to have served with you. It is hard

to believe that 20 months have come and gone since I took

command of your detachment. I must say that being allowed to

command this detachment is the highlight of my Army career and

I think I will never have another assignment that is more

rewarding.

As your commander, it was my goal to get the best out of our very talented men and

women and invoke their team spirit to bring our collective success. I believe Charlie

Cobras have exactly done what was expected. It is absolutely remarkable how much

this detachment has accomplished over this time. We had a very successful deployment;

took up full responsibility of Military Pay from Italy Finance Office (IFO); provided

FMST mission in the Horn of Africa (Djibouti) – these are some of our many great

accomplishments. Our Soldiers have proved to be the best finance Soldiers. I just want

you all to know that we get praised by our senior leaders and local commanders for your

hard work, dedication to duties and professionalism each day. Cobras, your contribution

to the detachment brings credit not only upon yourself, your command team as well. A

leadership change is about to take place and soon I will be seen off. I hope you will

continue to fulfill your commitment, dedication and professionalism that make you

distinguished from others.

From the Detachment Sergeant

A Soldier's Request:

Treat me with respect, Sergeant. For no heart in all the world is more

loyal than the heart of an American soldier. Do not beat my spirit with

your words, Sergeant. For though I will do what you demand, your

guidance, patience, and understanding will more quickly teach me to

“Be, Know, and Do.” Speak with me often, Sergeant. For the praise

and counseling you give is expected. I am an American Soldier,

expecting to be trained. Discipline must be a part of my life. Train me

for the elements, Sergeant. For I must learn to fight and win in the cold, the wet, and the

desert. Those who would be enemies will use these elements. I must be prepared. I ask no

greater glory, Sergeant, than to defend our country and our way of life, against all enemies,

both foreign and domestic. Allow me that privilege, Sergeant…..train me. Provide me the

necessities of food and drink, Sergeant. Train me to be self sufficient, that I may lead the way,

and stand ready, willing and able to protect you, with my life if necessary, should your life be

in danger. Train me, Sergeant, that one day I too can be called Sergeant, Trainer of soldiers,

Backbone of the Army. Train me to accept those responsibilities that are yours. Train me to

train my soldiers to be the greatest defenders of freedom in the world. Sergeant, train me to be

a Sergeant. I shall leave this Army knowing, with my last step and my last breath, that my fate

was always safest in your hands Sergeant, train me that I too can earn the title “Sergeant".

What are we as leaders doing to meet our Soldiers request? Are we taking the time to coach,

teach, and mentor our Soldiers? How effective are we as leaders? How are we training the

sons and daughters of America entrusted into our hands? Being an Army Leader is not a game,

it's not a paycheck that we collect, it's not a nine to five job. We are entrusted with more

responsibilities than we know we have. We are responsible for the health and welfare as well

as the training of our Soldiers. Our job is never ending, as we must train and guide our

Soldiers on a daily basis. How effective are you as an "Army Leader?"

FROM THE INCOMING COMMANDER

Cobras,

The next couple of months are going to challenge our

endurance and resiliency. As we continue to lose

many of our fellow Cobras as they PCS, we also

continue to lose their valuable experience and s

upport. The effects of this loss are further aggravated

by the current Government Civilian furlough and Change of Command from

Captain Hossain to me and again from me to Captain Young. There have

already been days when certain sections have been working with skeleton

staffing as we try and cope with the different competing demands. Despite

these challenges, however, we have proven our adaptability and have

continued to effectively complete our daily mission. We must stay motivated

and give our best efforts whether it be assisting the community with financial

matters or training physically, tactically, or technically. It is a pleasure to

continue to serve with you all in this new capacity to help usher the

Detachment through this period of transition, and I commend you all for full-

heartedly embracing the forthcoming uncertainty and changes.
