(2003),withaspecializationinHumanitiesComputing.MyprimarysupervisorwasDr.PatriciaClements,oneoftheprincipalinvestigatorsontheOrlandoProject,agroundbreakingdigitalhistoryofwomen’swritingintheBritishIsles;mysecondarysupervisorwasJorgeFrascara,well-knowninternationallyforhisworkininformationdesign.In2004,IwasaKillamPost-DoctoralResearchFellowintheDigitalHumanities(supervisedbyStéfanSinclair),thoughIdeclinedtheaward’ssecondyearoffundinginordertotakeupatenure-trackpostinDigitalHumanitiesattheUniversityofAlberta—aprogramwhichIhadhelpedtocreatesomeyearsearlierasamemberofitsinterdisciplinaryplanningcommittee.CHARACTERIZINGDESIGNRESEARCHTheinternationalacademicdesigncommunityhasbeendebatingforatleastthepast25yearswhatresearchindesignmeans.25yearsago,peoplenewtothefieldwerelargelyeducatedusingthemaster-apprenticemodelthatisstillcommoninsomeschoolstoday.Iunderstandacademicdesignresearchtobedistinctfromthedesignresearchthatoccursinatypicaldesignproject.Thescholarlyactivityisaformofnewknowledgeproductionwheretheapproachisdistinctfromboththesciencesandthehumanities,butissharedbyotherfieldssuchasarchitecture,engineering,andmedicine,aswellcertainresearchtraditionswithin,forexample,chemistry,math,computerscience,andnanotechnology.Whatthesefieldsshareisagenerativeaspect,whereprototypescanbecreated,notinasequenceconvergingonanewcommodity,butinsteadinwritingoraddressingaresearchquestion.Ihavebeenpublishingandpresentingthisideaanditsimplicationsaroundtheworld,andmysupervisioninthePhDprogramisbasedonit.

Ialsobelievethatbothdesignanddesignresearcharefundamentallyinterdisciplinary.Designoperatesataleveldistinctfromtheparticularcontentdomainthatischosenforanygivenusecase.Asystemsdesigner,forinstance,mightworkinanyfieldwhereasystemisinvolved,rangingfromtransportationtohealthcaretomulti-modalindustry.Similarly,acommunicationdesignermayworkonanymaterial,medium,ortechnologyusedtocommunicateanykindofinformation,rangingfromprintedinterviewtranscriptstodigitalsystemsforvisualizingXML-encodedprimarydocuments.

MYCONTRIBUTIONSTODESIGNRESEARCHMyresearchisintheareasofinformationdesignandcommunicationdesign;however,thesetermsmaybemisleading.Myinformationdesignresearchhasitsfocusonwaysforpeopletostartwiththesameinformationandunderstandwhatitimpliesfromasmanyvalidperspectivesaspossible.Incommunicationdesignresearch,Iamfindingwaysforpeopletocommunicateacrossdifferencesofvocabulary,education,personalhistory,andculturalassumptions.Tothatend,thedisseminationofresultsincludesabook,100papers,and150academicpresentations.Thesuccessfulresearchgrantproposalshaveaddressed93differentresearchquestions.

Thecontributionsofthisworkfallintoseveralareas.Firstisrich-prospectbrowsingtheory,whichsuggestsanapproachtothedesignofvisualization-basedinterfacestoreasonablysmalldatacollections–typicallyunder10,000items.Thereareasurprisinglylargenumberofthem,andIhaveexaminedtheirvariousaspectsusingdozensofdifferentcontextsandprototypes.TheworkisbasedonJ.Appleton’sresearchonhabitattheory.

Secondismyresearchonthedesignofnewaffordancesforreading.Aftercompletingafederally-funded7-yearproject,myteamhaddevelopedexperimentalprototypestoaddressawiderangeofresearchquestions.TheresultshavebegunfindingapplicationinSusanBrown’sCanadianWritingResearchCollaboratory(CWRC),whichisanationalinfrastructureforhumanitiesscholarshipthatisusingsomeofmyresearchresultsasthebasisforitscorefunctionality.

Mythirdresearchareaisexperimentingwithphysicalinterfacesdedicatedtoqualitativeanalysis.FederallyfundedbythegovernmentofBrazil,thisbasicresearchhasbeenyieldingresultsthatareincreasinglyconvincing.Weareshowingthattheoutcomeofanalysisprocessesthatincludespatialandkinestheticintelligencearesignificantlyimprovedoverotherformsofcollaborativequalitativeanalysis.Inparticular,itseemsthatthiskindofmodelingencouragesitsuserstodiscover,inanemergentway,multiplevalidperspectivesonthedata.Weforeseeapplicationsinparticipatorydesign,user-centeredresearch,andstrategicplanning.

DESIGNRESEARCHANDSOCIALINNOVATIONIthinkthistopicmeritsitsownsection.AsI’vesaid,acommongoalrunningthroughmyvariousresearchprojectsistoincreasethepositiveimpactofdesignontheworld.Withthisinmind,Ihavemadecontributionstoawidearrayofdigitalandphysicaltoolsandassets,aswellasanumberofprocessesandsystems.

Attheleveloftheindividual,Ihavehelpedcreatetoolsthatmakedigitalmediamoreaccessibleandusefultopeoplewithparticularphysicalorculturalneeds.A“pillbrowser”forseniorsprovidesatailoredsearchsystemforidentifyingmedications.Amulti-lingualthesaurusmakesdigitalmaterialssearchableacrossmultiplelanguages.Are-designedsummarydocumentandcorrespondingsetofbestpracticesaimstoimprovedisseminationofmedicalinformationtoisolatedruraldoctors.Thisworkisfoundedininclusivedesignandhuman-centereddesignpractice.

Attheinstitutionallevel,Ihaveworkedtomakemyowndisciplinemoreinclusive.Theannual“DayofDH”eventthatIhelpedlaunchin2009providesacommonforumforathinlydispersedinternationalcommunityofscholars.Lastyear’sevent,hostedinMadrid,broughttogethermorethan200digitalhumanistsfromdozensofcountries.IhavealsoadvocatedforfairnessinpublicationpracticesintheDigitalHumanitiesandbeyond,co-creatingandapplyinganinterdisciplinaryResearchProjectCharterthatprotectsthecontributionsofallparticipants.

ThemostambitiousindustryprojectIhaveundertakeninvolvedSteelcase,athree-billion-dollarprivatelyownedcompany.Workingwiththeirinternationalteamofinformationarchitects,Iguidedaradicalredesignoftheirinformationecosystem.Theresultremovestheconstraintsofhierarchy,allowingpeopletobegintheirexplorationswherevertheywantandcreatetheirownpaththroughtheinformation.Myco-investigatoratSteelcase,DonHendriksen,neatlysummarizedthecoreofthisproject:“Hierarchyisarrogance.”Thisissueisparticularlyimportantwhereapowergradientstronglyfavoursthosewhoproducedigitalmaterialsoverthosewhomakeuseofthem.

Internationally,Iworkwithcolleaguestoaddresssocialinequitiesbypromotingmoredemocraticaccesstoinformationandotherresources.IamcurrentlypartofaconsortiumwithPolishandBrazilianresearcherstoimplementdesignstrategiesforenhancingcitizenengagement.WehavealreadyconductedaseriesofjointworkshopsintheUSandBrazil,andhavebegunuser-testingasimple,low-fidelitytoolforcommunicatingandunderstandingdifferentpointsofviewwithinagroupsetting.IamalsoamemberoftheScientistsWithoutBordersfederalinnovationprograminBrazil.Weareinthemiddleofathree-yearresearchprojecttoimprovedesignmethodsforstrategicthinking,withtheaimofsupportingeconomicdevelopmentthathasabroadlocalbase.TheseeffortsgrowoutofmyengagementwithPauloFreire’sPedagogyoftheOppressed(1968),abookthathasbeenfoundationaltomythinkingasanacademicsincethelate-1990s.

OrlandoProject(1999–2010).During1999-2000IwasagraduateresearchassistantontheOrlandoProject,anelectronichistoryofwomen’swritingintheBritishIsles,producedcollaborativelybytheUniversityofAlbertaandtheUniversityofGuelph.MyresponsibilitiesincludedtaggingtextinSGML(standardgeneralizedmark-uplanguage)andusingXSL(extensiblemark-uplanguage)stylesheetsforwebdelivery.IcontinueworkingwiththeOrlandoProject,asanassociateresearcherininterfacedesign.
