JULY 2013 THE KINGS PAGE CHRIST THE KING LUTHERAN CHURCH A SUMMER OF REFRESHING! “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.” Acts 3:19 Summer has historically been a time when people switch their schedules up and try to take time off to be refreshed. School is out, the weather is warm, it is a season that seems to be there purely for renewal: body, mind and spirit. Times of renewal are essential for a sustainable life. Very few things can run 24/7 without stopping; even machines need down time for regular maintenance and repair. When Peter stood up before his fellow brothers and spoke the words we see in Acts 3:19, he gave us a great pre- scription for what it means to be refreshed. The first step is to Repent! When you see the word repent, it liter- ally means to “change your mind”, which results in a change of action. Repent means that we realize something is not right, and we turn around and move in a different direction. This summer, my prayer for us all is that we repent — to the point where we stop our busyness and take time to reflect. Where is my center? Is it God and God’s will, or am I getting unbalanced? Am I involved in activi- ties or behaviors that are clearly not in God’s will? Could I invite Jesus to be a part of what I am doing? (If the answer is “no”, then it’s probably not something in God’s will.) Am I investing in the people in my family, or does my schedule keep me from the most significant relationships in my life? Do I need to change the amount of activities I’m involved in to stay refreshed and renewed? Even “good” activities can become bad if we are too involved. These are some good questions that most of us need to take time to think about, and summer is a perfect time to reevaluate our pace and our activities. Secondly, turn to God! In Matthew 6:25-34, Jesus speaks about the worries that we often carry with us about our situations, our well-being, and what we need in life. We spend a lot of unnecessary energy worrying when we could be focused on things that are way more productive. A SUMMER OF REFRESHING!

“Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.” Acts 3:19

Summer has historically been a time when people switch their schedules up and try to take time off to be refreshed. School is out, the weather is warm, it is a season that seems to be there purely for renewal: body, mind and spirit. Times of renewal are essential for a sustainable life. Very few things can run 24/7 without stopping; even machines need down time for regular maintenance and repair. When Peter stood up before his fellow brothers and spoke the words we see in Acts 3:19, he gave us a great pre-scription for what it means to be refreshed. The first step is to Repent! When you see the word repent, it liter-ally means to “change your mind”, which results in a change of action. Repent means that we realize something is not right, and we turn around and move in a different direction. This summer, my prayer for us all is that we repent — to the point where we stop our busyness and take time to reflect. Where is my center? Is it God and God’s will, or am I getting unbalanced? Am I involved in activi-ties or behaviors that are clearly not in God’s will?

So Jesus concludes His message with these words, “Seek first God’s kingdom and His

righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33) Instead of worrying, seek God first, trust in God’s plan and all the pieces of our lives will fall into place. Repent and turn to God…a good word for every day of our lives — are we turning to God first?

Finally, when we have repented and turned to God, then times of refreshing come. We were never designed to live this life without Jesus — when we try, we get dry! My hope for us all this summer, is that God will refresh and renew us in His Word and by His presence as we seek Him with all our hearts! I pray that as you take time on vacation, you will make time to seek God’s presence in worship and as a family. I pray that you will be renewed in worship as we continue to come together each week to be fueled up for the task of being the Body of Christ in our community, in our neighborhoods, in our workplaces, in our schools and in our homes.

We need Jesus and we need each other. I look forward to hearing how God is refreshing you in your faith as you seek Him first! See you in worship, and may times of refreshing come to us all!

Blessings, P. Mark

FATHER & CHILD FISHING OUTING

We all know about the importance of fathers spending time with their son/daughter. The relationship a son/daughter has with their father greatly shapes the person he/she will become in the future. A father helps to mold a son/daughter into a person they’ll be proud of by taking them on spe-cial father-child activities. These kinds of activities allow you to spend some needed one-on-one time with your son or daughter. It’s much easier to open up when we’re doing something side by side, and we can just let the talk flow naturally as we cast a fishing line or tinker with tools. John Beran, Spence Gammell, and Pastor Kenneth are planning a Father-Child fishing event and picnic. Space is limited. Don’t miss this opportunity to bond with your child or adopt a child for the day. We will reserve a picnic area and each family can provide their own food. Come and enjoy! To sign up and/or for more information, contact Pastor Kenneth, (760) 728-3256 OR [email protected].

Date: Saturday August 3rd, 2013 Time: 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Location: Lake Poway (www.poway.org) Cost: $10 per person

(Plus parking, and rental equipment cost and fishing license)

CHRIST THE KING WOMEN’S CIRCLES

WEDNESDAY WOMEN’S PRAYER CIRCLE — For many years, a number of our ladies have been meeting on Wednesday mornings at 9:30 a.m. in the Egge Library to pray for our church, our community and our world. We invite you to come pray with us! Especially those who attended the “Praying With Others” seminar with Dr. Joe Johnson. It will be a great opportunity to put into action what you have learned. Contact: Martha Rehfeldt

MARY/MARTHA CIRCLE — Our Circle meets in the Temecula/ Murrieta area. For the months of July and August, we will take a summer break, and resume our study on Tuesday, September 10th. Contact: Dolores Stralow, [email protected].

STITCH N’ GIVE — We will be changing times during the sum-mer months. Usually, we baste quilts on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 11:00 a.m., and tie quilts on the 4th Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. However, in July we will meet on Wednesday, July 17th at 9:00 a.m. in the Fireside Room, and on Wednesday, July 24th at 9:00 a.m. Our goal this year is to make 100 quilts for Lutheran World Relief. The quilts are sent around the world and within the USA to help families in need, due to famine, war, or natural disas-ters. They are also sent to hospitals. We welcome new members and will teach you what you need to know. It is easy! Bring your own sewing kit or use our supplies. Contact: Kay Lautenschläger, [email protected].

The Missions Committee has once again had the privilege to interview many of the July 2013 Bridge of Hope Kenya Team last month, and we were truly blessed!! This group is filled with the Holy Spirit, and it showed in how eloquently and lovingly each one spoke of their reasons for going to serve in Kenya, and about the moment they felt called to do so. The team will visit the orphanages that Bridge of Hope supports, bringing them our love and our prayers. During last year's Kenya mission, it was observed that many of the children carry their school books in old, plastic grocery bags. CTK member Sylvia Dixon, quickly thought of a perfect solu-tion. She had lots of leftover mate-rial from the dresses and pants they had sewn for the children last year so, she crafted a back pack out of the material and cording! They turned out beautifully! She has made 50 back packs and the team will bring them to the children on this trip. Brandon is also hoping to plant 100 avocado trees while there, which would truly bring Fallbrook to Kenya!

Once again, this mission trip is sure to be a blessing for the children in these orphanages, and once again, those who are going are sure to blessed. And for those of us here, we will also be blessed when they return and share their stories with the congregation. There will be one more fundraiser on Friday, July 5th, a Golf Tournament, at Arrowood Golf Course in Oceanside. Please come out and support the Bridge of Hope team! For more information, contact Brandon, (760) 212-7321. Please join all of us on the Mission Committee in praying for this group. "Immanuel...God With Us!" Natalie Rhyne Missions Committee
