An elegant, world-class property set in the heart of Vancouver’s thriving and cosmopolitan downtown; the Wedgewood Hotel has been a well-kept secret to visitors of Vancouver since it opened in 1984. While the secret is definitely out, the elegance, charm and commitment to service remain. Prior to the Wedgewood, Eleni Skalbania, its Greek born founder had the opportunity to manage the Devonshire Hotel for a group of Vancouver investors in the late 1970’s. Her hands-on style, commitment and hard work resulted in a dramatic economic turnaround for the property within eight months. Her next venture was the Hotel Georgia where she demonstrated her ability to manage a much larger hotel with true flair. Following the sale of the Hotel Georgia in 1983, it was time for her lifelong dream to open her own luxury hotel. In 1984, she purchased and re-worked the former Mayfair Apartment Hotel, and opened the doors of the exquisite Wedgewood Hotel. In 1994, Elpie Marinakis Jackson, Eleni’s youngest daughter, discovered her passion for the Hotel business and decided to join her Mother at the Wedgewood Hotel. Having been raised around the Hotel most of her life, it quickly became second nature to her. Elpie attended the University of British Columbia and received her second degree from the University of Reading, UK. Now, as co-owner and Managing Director of the Hotel, Elpie continues her Mother’s legacy. She has undoubtedly inherited her passion, flair and dedication for the business. Having worked with Eleni for the past 20 years, and traveled around the world herself, Elpie has established her very own fine taste which is now evident in all the changes and upgrading she has brought into the Wedgewood in order to ensure that the Hotel continues to be a leader in comfort, luxury, technology and above all, in service. Its award-winning restaurant, Bacchus, offers an unforgettable epicurean experience in an elegant and romantic setting. Walk through the Hornby Street entrance, and Bacchus’ attention to detail is immediately apparent. You are instantly surrounded by luxury, with richly upholstered furniture, warm, dark cherry wood, and Murano crystal fixtures imported from Venice. A large School of Rubens Oil Painting depicting Bacchus himself, the Greek god of wine and revelry, presides over the lounge, the site of Vancouver's most popular cocktail hour. At Bacchus, service is polished and the hospitality warm and inviting. With food like this, one would naturally expect an outstanding wine list, and Bacchus does not disappoint. From the West Coast to France, Italy, South America and Australia, Bacchus takes oenophiles on a tour of the world's finest vineyards. One recent hotel guest wrote a thank you note, referring to Bacchus as "mind readers - astounding!” Actually, it's just par for the course at Bacchus, a diamond in the heart of Vancouver's Wedgewood Hotel, downtown.
The Spa at the Wedgewood Hotel in downtown Vancouver opened its doors in the spring of 2003 and
has since won numerous awards, including the 2012 Consumer Choice Award in the category of Day Spa for the city of Vancouver and surrounding areas.

Born on the Greek Island of Santorini and raised in Athens, Eleni Skalbania came to Canada in her late teens with the challenge of learning the English language and adapting to a new world. That accomplished in a very short time, she went on to raising her two daughters while working first in the brokerage business and then in the airline industry. In late 1977, Eleni had the opportunity to manage the Devonshire Hotel for a group of Vancouver investors. The result was a dramatic economic turnaround for the property within eight months, something she attributes to her hands-on style and her commitment towards eliminating waste and increasing operating efficiency. Her next acquisition was the Hotel Georgia where she demonstrated her ability to manage a much larger hotel. Following the sale of the Hotel Georgia in 1983, it was time for her lifelong dream. Enchanted with her experience of the intimate comfort, elegance and luxurious quality of hotels from her travels around the world, and certain that Vancouver was primed for a similar world-class property, Eleni decided it was time to take another chance. In 1984, she gutted and re-furbished the former Mayfair
Apartment Hotel. Six months later, she opened the doors of the exquisite Wedgewood Hotel & Spa. Relying on her intuition, combined with her personal sense of colour and texture, Eleni acted as her own general contractor and interior designer. To create the ambience she sought in public areas, she moved personal collections of antiques and pieces of art from her home, while commissioning craftsmen to build custom-designed furniture. The 83 room Wedgewood was an immediate success when it opened in June 1984. Home to visiting celebrities and dignitaries, the Wedgewood has remained among the most popular hotels in Vancouver. Eleni's attention to detail and her relentless commitment to her guests were recognized nationally with the highly acclaimed Independent Hotelier of the Year Award.
Eleni passed away on September 28th, 2013, following a long battle with Lung Cancer. The Wedgewood is now owned by her daughters, Marousa Dumaresq and Elpie Marinakis Jackson. Elpie is now the Managing Director of the hotel and she possesses the same passion for hospitality and attention to detail as her mother.
E l p i e M a r i n a k i s J a c k s o n Co-Owner and Managing Director
Eleni Skalbania’s youngest daughter, Elpie, attended the University of British Columbia where she received
her Bachelor in Arts and then moved to the UK to complete a degree in law at the University of Reading.
After returning to Vancouver, she pursued her studies further at the UBC Law School, but she ultimately
found her passion for the Hotel business and decided to join her mother at the Wedgewood Hotel. Having
been raised in the Hotel business, it quickly became second nature to her.
Now, as co-owner and Managing Director of the Hotel, Elpie continues her Mother’s legacy. She has
undoubtedly inherited her passion, flair and dedication for the business. Having worked with Eleni for the
past 20 years, and traveled around the world herself, Elpie has established her very own fine taste which is
now evident in all the changes and upgrading she has brought into the Wedgewood in order to ensure that
the Hotel continues to be a leader in comfort, luxury, technology and above all, in service.

In Western Canada, the tradition of la Route du Bonheur – or the road to happiness – lives on, miles
from its French roots of vacationing between manors, villas, and châteaux, but always in the traveling
spirit of Relais & Châteaux. Experience the rich character, charm, and culinary excellence of our partners
as you navigate between each distinctive property and its own enchanting setting.
Start your journey in the Post Hotel & Spa in Lake Louise, Alberta. Nestled in a beautiful valley in Banff
National Park, the Post Hotel offers a stunning panorama of the Canadian Rockies and Lake Louise.
Across the Rockies, you will arrive at the luxurious boutique hotel, Wedgewood Hotel & Spa, located
in the heart of downtown Vancouver. Explore the elegance and charm of the city, then retreat to the
Wedgewood Hotel and Spa for rejuvenation. The Bacchus Restaurant & Lounge at The Wedgewood
features Modern French gourmet cuisine comprised of local West Coast fare. The award-winning
Wedgewood Day Spa offers treatments such as the Signature Thai Fusion massage, the Chocolát Vanilla
Decadent Body Treatment and the Crystaline Gemstone Facial.
Enjoy the beautiful landscape of British Columbia on a helicopter ride to Sonora Resort in less than an
hour. Nestled in a Pacific archipelago, Sonora Resort combines wilderness and luxury in perfect
harmony. The wildlife is splendid – eagles perch on towering trees, whales surf the currents, and
observing grizzly bears in their natural habitat.
Take a floatplane to the remote, rugged west coast at eclectic Tofino, where the Wickaninnish Inn’s
hand-carved cedar structures stands elegantly above the dramatic surf of the Pacific Ocean. Another
gem in Tofino, the Clayoquot Wilderness Resort, has also joined the Relais & Châteaux family recently.
Its luxurious guest tents offer an exclusive and personal environment for all of our visitors. Heading
towards South of Vancouver Island, you will reach Hastings Country House Hotel, situated on the
picturesque Salt Spring Island. The charming waterfront resort lies on nearly nine hectares of lovingly
tended gardens, overlooking Ganges Harbour.
Relais & Châteaux offers you the opportunity to explore our Western Canadian Route du Bonheur
whether at one, two or all of our member properties: west to east or east to west – the choice is yours in
