MARC-ANTOINE GOULARD ATTHE MINSTER GALLERYMarc-Antoine Goulard has been represented by The MinsterGallery in Winchester and in London ever since he moved toLondon two years ago.Born in France in 1964, Marc-Antoine Goulard began his careeras a classical musician. He studied the flute and composition atthe Conservatoire de Paris where he graduated with honors andbecame a concertist. In 1985, he left France for the USA to study

saxophone and jazz at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. Whiledeveloping his performing arts skills, he began to explore plastic arts and wasintrigued by the common foundation of tone and composition in music andpainting. What began as a diversion soon commanded his time and interest. Hewas offered a residency at Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in Connecticut andit was there that he transitioned from being a professional musician to being anartist. Early influences included such visionaries as Mark Rothko, Antoni Tàpiesand Nicholas de Staël.Continuing to study and refine his techniques and style, Marc-Antoine’s workwas first exhibited in Boston in 1990. Since then, he has had many exhibitionsin Paris, LA, New York and his work is found in prestigious collections in Europeand America.Marc-Antoine creates wonderfully evocative paintings. At first glance, they arepleasing compositions of color. But as you keep looking, the layers of colors andhorizontal flow often suggest landscapes or seascapes. He paints on wood panelsstarting by applying a background of white as the base of his canvas, and thenbegins building up layers of color – many layers creating subtle combinations oftranslucent shades. He works with painting knives instead of brushes, like aspatula, which works for him as an extension of his hand. His musical and jazz background is in his work, with light, color, inspiration andspontaneity.“I draw inspiration for my paintings directly from nature; rather than re-creating a landscape on a canvas, I aim to express its energy and essence.Where some people see landscapes and shapes, I amstimulated by light, form, and emotional response to mysurroundings”. Today, Marc-Antoine lives in London andcontinues to exhibit in Paris and New York. The Minster Gallery shows Marc-Antoine Goulard’s work inWinchester and regularly organizes visits to his London Studio.

The Minster Gallery is situated in the heart of Winchester. It isa ten minute walk from the train station and is easily found off the Squarefacing the main entrance of the Cathedral on Great Minster Street. It is openMonday to Saturday from 10am to 5.30pm and otherwise by appointment.

MONOTYPES BY MARC-ANTOINE GOULARD

Pursuing his artistic journey, Marc-Antoine Goulard has developed for a numberof years in parallel to his oil paintings, unique engravings using carborundum.

Rather than multiplying and reproducing his work, Marc-Antoine prefers to workon unique one off pieces: each one is an “epreuve d’artiste”. He works with ancientand manual techniques using hand-made high quality paper.

With the mineral carborundum which is an abrasive in the form of powder, hemakes a paste and creates a kind of mould. This mould has on its surface drawingsand shapes which will then be engraved on an aluminum plate. Marc-Antoinethen colours the plate with ink, places the high-quaity hand-made paper and allis put under press. This process is repeated a few times with different plates andcolours to create the transparencies and colours of the final work.

The artistic process is similar to the one Marc-Antoine uses for his paintings butthe result differs as the colours and media are both softer and more subtle. He isas for his oil paintings searching for the landscape, seascape or figure through thetransparency of light and colour.
