Message from the General ManagerWe are very proud to have successfully attracted new international events to Cairns that not only demonstrate the unique qualities of our region but also deliver a lasting legacy locally and internationally.

The 2017 WONCA World Rural Health Conference will showcase the unique health service delivery of our vast area and work towards better health outcomes for people in all rural communities.

Whilst, the 2016 International Conference on Tropical and Temperate Horticulture will be linked to delivering improved productivity and profitability across the globe, it will be particularly important for the large horticultural industry on our doorstep.

Several other conferences offer community engagement opportunities that will provide enrichment to local residents.

Our region’s ability to provide unique contributions to conference topics coupled with outstanding business events infrastructure are important factors in the decision making process for our clients.

However being surrounded by two World Heritage areas, the Great Barrier Reef and Wet Tropics Rainforest, really does provide the inspirational experience that international delegates are seeking…. As UNESCO says, “A World Heritage site is of outstanding universal value to humanity... because our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration.”

For an outstanding event - in an inspirational location - consider Cairns, Great Barrier Reef, Australia.

Toyota Road WarriorsThe Cairns Convention Centre was very proud to host the Toyota National Dealer Meeting and launch of the new Hilux in September 2015.

The welcome celebrations were held at the Cairns Cruise Liner Terminal, the Hilux launch and gala dinner took place at the Cairns Convention Centre and off road experiences were enjoyed at the Billabong in Kuranda.

Three Meetings in 31 YearsThe Australian and New Zealand Head and Neck Cancer Society hosted the World Congress on Larynx Cancer in Cairns in July 2015, only the third event of its kind since the first congress was held in 1974.

The thought provoking program was designed for all those working in the care of patients with larynx cancer, not only at presentation, but in the years afterwards as well. It also provided delegates from the USA, Europe, Australia and New Zealand the opportunity to network with colleagues across many disciplines.

The conference included pre-conference workshops, a satellite meeting and well-supported trade exhibition.

Behaviour 2015A joint meeting of the International Ethological Conference, the Australasian Society for the Study of Animal Behaviour, the Australasian/New Zealand/Africa Region of Applied Ethology was hosted at the Cairns Convention Centre in August 2015.

The meeting brought 800 delegates from 43 countries which was the upper limit expected for the conference. “The overall goal was to bring together different societies involved in animal behavior to a single meeting and to host the event in our own backyard and we succeeded in that well and truly,” said the Co Convener, Associate Professor Dr Phillip Taylor.

In addition to pre-conference workshops, plenary and breakout meetings, poster sessions and exhibition, a public lecture was held where residents of Cairns joined delegates for a presentation on animal behavior relevant to the region.

Helloworld held their important Frontliners Forum in Cairns in August, providing a great career and professional development opportunity for their important customer facing staff.

In addition to the main conference sessions a number of workshops were held together with a travel trivia session. A ‘Race Around the World’ proved popular in the tradeshow.

Delegates had the opportunity for great networking with a poolside welcome function, casual offsite evening and gala awards dinner at the Convention Centre.

A number of pre and post tours were also offered to delegates including visits to the Great Barrier Reef, Cape Tribulation and Mossman Gorge, Rainforestation Nature Park, Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures and hot air ballooning.

Green Tree Ants also known as Weaver Ants, are a traditional source of bush tucker and are found in the tropical coastal areas of Australia. The Green Tree Ant’s abdomen is high in vitamin C and protein and tastes a little like lime. As well as being a good source of nutrition and flavor, they also provide a traditional remedy for coughs, colds and fevers.

The ants are a popular ingredient used by chefs at restaurants in Cairns.

The Best Way Forward For Prostate CancerProstate Cancer continues to be a topic of great debate around the world, and the need for increased education, improved treatment options and sharing of knowledge has never been more important.

That is why leading experts converged on Cairns in August 2015 to attend the the Prostate Cancer World Congress.

Delegates started the conference on the Great Barrier Reef with a welcome event on Green Island. They also enjoyed a dinner at the historic Tanks Art Centre and a Fun Run on the Cairns Esplanade as part of the program.

However the main objective was for top minds in the field to come together and decide on the best way forward to fund further research, develop better treatments and to eradicate prostate cancer in the long term.

Speakers from the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, the Netherlands and of course Australia were included in the comprehensive program. This ensured the most contemporary information and research-validated findings were presented.

“There is no hotel in Australia that can offer the facilities we need to run all

our sessions at the same time, so using a convention centre was the only an-

swer. We looked at doing it in Sydney and Melbourne, but you can’t go past

the value for money and the World Heritage appeal of Cairns. It’s just a

beautiful part of the world. I certainly also used the fact that the Convention

Centre had been voted the World’s Best Conference Centre in 2014 as part of

the promotion of our congress.”

it has that great balance of scale.

It is large enough to offer all the

The thing that will stick most in my

“Hosting the International Symposium on Tropical and

Temperate Horticulture in Tropical North Queensland

is a specific decision on the part of the organisers... Tropical North Queensland possesses the three drivers

for horticulture success: quality products, proximity to target markets and well-

developed supply chains.

“Cairns’ proximity to South East Asia and the ability of

the convention centre to host the nine symposia were also

important considerations.”

“Selecting Cairns was the easiest decision we had to make because it is an international gateway for the

Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest. The staff at the Convention Centre established a fabulous working

relationship with our Steering Committee and the assistance they provided was

paramount to our successful bid to host the 55th International Women and Law

Enforcement Conference in 2017. Their professionalism and innovation

shone through with advice and the development of marketing tools.

“The Centre itself is a wonderful venue and we are delighted to be able to invite

law enforcement officers from around the world to share in this conference and

what Cairns has to offer.”

Debbie Platz ~ Steering Committee55th International Women and Law

Enforcement Conference.
