o SciCom; 2015 – present g Inspired by attending a summer institute at the Alan Alda Center for

Communicating Science @ Stony Brook, I have launched a College Center for Science Communication (SciCom). SciCom designs and deliver sworkshops for faculty and students. SciCom also provides avenues for faculty and students to practice their presentation skills though unique and new collaborations with area K-12 schools as well as the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History. g Jargon is Jibberish workshops – In the spring of 2015 I developed a set of communication workshops that are being delivered to graduate students as well as to TCU staff.

g Three Minute Thesis competition – I initiated an annual 3MT competition in our College in spring 2015 (http://cse.tcu.edu/3mt).

Science meets Art (since 2013) – An initiative to communicate science through art. In conjunction with our Student Research Symposium we offer an art competition for students in the TCU School of Art where students are asked to work with science students and create works of art that attempt to communicate artistic impressions of science. I was lead to this idea from my collaboration with Ana England (http://www.anaengland.com) several years ago.

In the Spring of 2017, SciCom cosponsored the purchase of an underwater rover. The rover is presently being used by fine arts faculty in a project involving exploring and utilizing the geography, topology, geology of Iceland to produce interactive art exhibits planned for the fall of 2017.

Science meets Fiction (since 2016) – A science fiction writing competition organized in collaboration with the TCU New Media Writing Studio.

Continuing a tradition established in 2010, I give a science lecture to the TCU Faculty & Staff in the weeks before the beginning of each fall semester.

o Fort Worth Medical School – Fort Worth Center for Empathetic Communication; 2016 – present Following up on my interactions with the Alda Center in 2014 I hosted a number

of visits from the Alda Center including a visit from Alan Alda as well as a one day workshop for TCU administrators and the leadership of the new FW Medical School (first class matriculating in Fall 2019). As a result, Dr. Evonne Kaplan-Liss, then the Medical Program Director at the Alda Center, was hired as Assistant Dean into the FW Medical School to develop the medical communication curriculum for the school. Evonne and I are also working to establish a Medical/STEM communication center with a focus on empathetic communication.

o “Shots of Knowledge”; 2017 – present Together with Eric Simanek (TCU Professor of Chemistry) and Rob Arnold (a

Biologist and Head Distiller at the Fort Worth Firestone & Robertson Distillery) I have formed the science communication team “Shots of Knowledge”. The goal of the team is to communicate science to the public in innovative ways through live presentations, books, video, etc.

o Vectors Office; 2014 – present I created the College Vectors Office to better coordinate Marketing, Career

Services, and Fund Raising initiatives. The Director of Vectors reports to me and together we also provide oversight of College social media and web initiatives. New departmental and college web sites were developed in the past year (http://cse.tcu.edu/vectors-office).

o Science and Engineering Research Center (SERC); 2006 – present I wrote an internal grant to our Strategic Initiative Fund to spearhead

undergraduate research in the College. To date, SERC has funded about 350 undergraduate student research projects totaling around $500,000 in grants (http://www.serc.tcu.edu).

o Student Research Symposium (SRS); 2003 – present I provide Dean’s Office oversight of our annual College undergraduate and

graduate Student Research Symposium (http://www.srs.tcu.edu). The SRS is organized by an interdisciplinary committee of college faculty, with around 300 students presenting their research each year.

o Mentor to Carson and Cannan Huey-You; 2013 – present In 2014 a family approached me as they were looking for a college for their

gifted 10-yr old. Since that time, I have mentored Carson and his younger brother Cannan. I also served as Carson’s research advisor for his senior research project. Carson graduated in May, 2017 and I will be a co-advisor for his MS and PhD degrees. Cannan will be a freshman at TCU in 2017, majoring in Engineering as well as in Physics and Astronomy.

Graduate programming The management of TCU graduate programs is decentralized and housed in each of the Colleges of the Institution.

o Graduate Program Oversight g Ph.D. programs: Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, and Psychology, and Masters

programs: Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, and Psychology.

o Graduate Admission g Manage on-line graduate application interfacing with the various graduate
