OVER THE COUNTER MEDICINE COLLECTION February 16-17 Gathering Area Founded on the belief that health care is a basic human right, Duchesne Clinic provides services to patients with low incomes, regardless of religious affiliation. They emphasize the values of compassion, respect of personal dignity, and a sensitivity to human suffering. The clinics’ mission is to, in the spirit of the Sisters of Charity, reveal God’s healing love by improving the health of the individuals and communities we serve-especially those who are poor and vulnerable. Our patients have no insurance, not even Medicaid or Medicare, and no way to pay for their care. As safety net clinics, we provide primary health care, chronic disease management and medication assistance to very low-income uninsured residents of Wyandotte County. Current needs are listed below, generic brands are just fine. Only new, sealed, unexpired meds please!

Ibuprofen, Benadryl, antifungal cream, Hydrocortisone cream, antibiotic ointment, Loratadine, allergy meds, Aleve, Aspirin. For more information and other ways to get involved contact Jean in the office or go to: kcascension.org/Get Involved/Service Opportunities/Care for the Sick/Duchesne Clinic.

INFORMATIONAL MEETING GUATEMALAN MISSION TRIP February 11, 7:00PM Conference Rm. Back in late May, seven Ascension parishioners were blessed to lead our international mission effort in support of L.E.A.S.T., which stands for Loving the Elderly and Satiating His Thirst. Tucked away between three volcanoes and next to a huge lake is the town of San Lucas Toliman. The mission team has been to San Lucas Toliman several times, but this was our first time pairing with a particular Catholic group supporting the elderly in and around San Lucas Toliman. Many of the elderly there have lost their children in the civil war or no longer have any one to care for their needs. However, what they do have is the Holy Spirit and a graceful presence. We delivered mattresses to some that had never slept on a bed, brought food supplies to those way up in the hills, built a kitchen for an elderly woman, and helped with some basic medical checks at the main facility called Casa Feliz. In short, the trip and mission were amazing. If you are looking for a chance to disconnect with the world, but connect with your spirit and the spirit of others, please join us at our informational meeting on Monday, February 11, at 7:00pm in the conference room by the parish office. Our next mission trip will be May 28- June 3. We invite you to come and live firsthand Matthew 25:40 “And the king will say to them in reply, “Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.”

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS BREAKFAST BUFFET February 10, 9:00AM-11:30AM Parish Hall Please see Page 12 for additional information.

FACE TO FACE February 3, 7:00PM Church Face to Face is for anyone and everyone! Come and pray for your Superbowl team, your family, your neighbor! Jesus wants it all, and He wants to spend time with you too!

    WEEKLY PRAYER

    Thank you!

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Rejoicing in the Lord In the first reading, Ezra gets a strange reaction from the people to whom he reads the book of the law. First they lie down, with faces to the ground, and then they all are weeping. Remember the background of this reading. The people of Israel had returned from exile and needed to become a unified nation. Most had never heard the laws, so when they learned what was expected of them and realized how much of the Law they had broken, they wept from shame. Many probably didn't know that they had been breaking the law. Others might have been overwhelmed with all the requirements of the law. Ezra and Nehemiah console the people by reminding them that their return makes this a day "holy to the LORD" (Nehemiah 8:10). He adds that they would draw strength from "rejoicing in the LORD." That may be good advice for us also. We might find ourselves so trapped in sin that we think we could never be forgiven. We need to remember that Jesus loved sinners so much that he gave his life on the cross to free us from sin. No sin can be so bad that God's love cannot forgive it. In other words, God's forgiveness is only limited by our failure to ask for it. As the psalms say, God's mercy endures forever. In fact, the more I have to repent, the more God wants to forgive. So we can rejoice in the Lord's forgiveness and the Spirit will give us the strength to change our lives. And what about those who find the law overwhelming? That usually means a lack of faith in God's willingness to help us or in our ability to do the best we can to live as Christians. It can also be because we have forgotten Jesus' saying that all of God's laws are contained in the command to love God and love our neighbor as we love ourselves. The more we come to accept God's presence in our lives and see God in others, the easier it becomes to keep the law of love.

Please pray for our active duty service members:

RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY By the Thousands They come by the thousands and thousands, year after year, because God commands us to love our neighbor. With few exceptions, those who March for Life in Washington and other spots in the U.S. are people of faith who see the pro-life movement not only as a response to Roe vs. Wade, but as a response to Jesus Christ. Their love for the children in the womb is a corollary of the command to love God and neighbor—their advocacy for the unborn is an aspect of their discipleship. The March elicits a number of specific dynamics: Repentance for we all are sinners; Grief as we march and mourn for the loss of the unborn and weep for the children for whom we advocate; Joy as we are surrounded by enthusiastic youth, happy families and veterans of this great crusade who celebrate the joy of life and are buoyed knowing Christ is Risen and walks among us and works through us as we travel on the right side of justice and of history; and Breadth as writers, housewives, ministers, researchers, pregnancy center staff and people of all callings without regard to ethnic background, religious or political affiliation embrace the pro-life movement. The words of a young high school student from Jefferson City, Missouri captures the sentiments of many: “the March is not only a way to show his faith (in God), but also a way to know he is not alone in the fight.”

(Sources: Christians Should March… LifeNews.com 1/16/19 Opinion by Fr. Frank Pavone; Local Catholic Teachers…Jefferson City News Tribune 1-19-19).

OUR COMMON HOME MINISTRY When we think of oceans and mountains, forests and deserts, trees, plants and animals, the sun, the moon, the stars, and all the galaxies, as God's creation, waiting eagerly to be "brought into the same glorious freedom as the children of God" (Roman 8:21), we can only stand in awe of God's majesty and God's all- embracing plan of salvation. It is not just we, human beings, who wait for salvation in the midst of our suffering; all of creation groans and moans with us longing to reach its full freedom.

In this way we are indeed brothers and sisters not only of all other men and women in the world but also of all that surrounds us. Yes, we have to love the fields full of wheat, the snowcapped mountains, the roaring seas, the wild and tame animals, the huge redwoods, and the little daisies. Everything in creation belongs, with us, to the large family of God.

MOTHERS OF YOUNG CHILDREN (MOYC) MOYC provides all Ascension Catholic mothers with children of second grade age and younger with spiritual enrichment to strengthen faith and friendships through fellowship, prayer, family activities and community service. THE CALIX SOCIETY Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Shawnee, KS. Founded in 1949, The Calix Society is a national association of Catholics in 12-Step recovery and their family and friends who are affected by alcoholism and other addictions. We are members of AA, NA, Al-Anon, and similar organizations who have found that the spirituality of the 12-Step process is, for us, greatly enhanced when practiced in the context of the richness, tradition, and dogma of our Catholic Faith. Calix (Latin for “Chalice”) is no substitute for AA, NA, or Al-Anon. We recommend that you continue attendance at your regular 12-Step group. Nor is this program for the newly clean and sober. One must have achieved a degree of sobriety to benefit from Calix. If you are currently active in a 12-Step group and would like to talk with other Catholics about how they have incorporated their Catholicism into their Steps, and how they have become better Catholics by doing so, consider attending one, or more, of our meetings. The Calix Society of Shawnee Mission Kansas meets one evening each month at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawnee. For specific information on time and place, call Neil at 913-645-7244, or Mary at 913-747-5039.
