My Gift of Treasure

Financial Update “For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45)

If you held a mirror up to your life, would it reflect God’s love and grace? If you are struggling with this, try changing your attitude from “I want more” to “thank you God for everything you have given me, I have enough to share”. This change in perspective will bring you joy through service to others.

STATUE AT OVERLAND PARK ARBORETUM

Many of you are aware that a very sexually controversial statue is in full view at the Overland Park Arboretum. Many people are concerned that the depiction of the headless woman sexting in this fashion is degrading to women and totally inappropriate for children. While some see it as art, others see it as obscene and not something that should be on display at a public place. A group of concerned citizens is seeking to have a Grand Jury look into the public placement of this statue; another 700 citizen signatures are needed to make this possible. This weekend those who wish will have the opportunity to sign a petition to submit this issue to a grand jury. The petition is not a request to remove the statue, but to have its appropriateness subject to grand jury decision. Public immorality is often tolerated and accepted because people are reluctant to take a stand. Give this some prayerful thought. Father Tom

GREAT CATHOLIC FAMILIES Parishioners and family members all have been given what some call gifts, others call talent, I like to refer to them as super powers. The Incredibles is one of my favorite family movies for this very reason. There are certain things that we all have passion about or find really easy for us that are not necessarily as easy for others. That might be singing or playing music, it might be design, it might be speaking, some people are particularly gifted in organization or mathematics. Many of us have that one child that just seems to know how every electronic device works without looking at instructions. Those are super powers! Great Catholic Families share their talents. They use their gifts or powers for good. There are so many ways that families can be involved in our parish through serving at Mass, teaching SOR, cooking for funeral lunches, volunteering for youth ministry, singing in a choir, etc. Try it! Talk about your families super powers. What do you all individually and as a family do that others find difficult? How can those gifts be used for family time as well as serving the parish or community? Based on “10 Things that Make for a Great Catholic Family,” by OurSundayVisitor. Share other tips or ideas with us at [email protected].

They would like to remain anonymous but we want them to know how much it is appreciated. The beauty and comfort will be enjoyed by many for years to come.

SOR NEEDS CATECHISTS AND AIDES SOR still needs a catechist and aide. We are in need of a 5th grade catechist and a 2nd grade aide each Wednesday from 5:30pm-6:45pm. DIVORCED/SEPARATED SUPPORT MINISTRY

Beginning November 4, 7:00PM Conference Rm.

Ascension’s divorced and separated support ministry is sponsoring a group of men and women dealing with the pain and changes this causes spouses and kids. This group will strive to be supportive, loving and welcoming to all who have been through or are going through this. Please plan on joining us on Wednesday evenings at 7:00pm in the conference room (next to the office) beginning November 4, (breaks for Thanksgiving week and the holidays), as we navigate this life-changing journey. This is an eight-week course. Please go to kcascension.org click on Current Volunteer Sign-ups under Quick Links in the lower right-hand portion of the website to sign up for the class, or email Jean at [email protected].

WEEKLY PRAYER

Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time Great Service

In Mark’s gospel, he has a short description of the Last Supper, without the washing of the disciples’ feet found in the gospel of John. Today’s passage has a similar message. While James and John seem to be close friends of Jesus, they obviously have not learned what it means to follow him. But they think this is the time to ask for their share in the glory of Jesus’ Kingdom. Jesus doesn’t make any promises of worldly glory, but he does promise a share in his suffering. When he goes on to remind them of how Gentiles rule over people, they probably thought he was going to let them do the same. Imagine their surprise when he told them that the greatest of them would be the ones who served the rest. They still did not understand that Jesus had to suffer and die to complete his life mission. They probably did not know what Jesus meant about their being baptized in death as Jesus would. But then how many people today know that leadership is a form of service? Whether you are head of a family, or of a nation, you were given that authority by God. And God expects leaders to not only direct those under them, but inspire and encourage them to do better. Parents do more than correct their children: They also guide them, love them, protect them, and sometimes even let them learn from their mistakes. This connection of leadership and service is all inclusive. A manager is called to help his employees do their jobs better, not by badgering, but by giving the support they need. Government leaders are called to serve all constituents, not just the ones who donate to their election fund. Military leaders must support their troops with respect as well as discipline. God calls Church leaders in a special way to service of their flock: to protect the weakest members, to give an example of Jesus’ love to all, and to be open to the movement of the Holy Spirit in both clergy and laity. Anyone who lives a life of loving service can be “greatest” in the Kingdom of God.

SCHOOL

First grade had the most amazing opportunity on Wednesday, October 7, at ACS. Brother Angelus and Brother Innocent, the sons of our school’s counselor, Mrs. Montgomery, joyfully skyped with the students and their teachers to discuss and share knowledge about Saint Francis. Saint Francis is the saint our first graders have been learning about during Religion class. The session began with a friendly hello, “Lord I Lift Your Name on High” was sung loudly by the children, and then the friars continued with stories and a question and answer section. The excitement ended when Br. Angelus and Br. Innocent asked the students to hug their mom, Mrs. Montgomery! “One of the best parts of this was at the end when Rusty or Scott, said to the 1st graders, “Since we are not there to give our Mom a hug, can you give her a hug for us?” “That was so sweet, and I got lots of hugs from the 1st graders!” said Mrs. Montgomery. The two guest speakers are in the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal Religious Order, and are currently attending St. Joseph’s Seminary in Yonkers, New York. What a blessing for our students to have such a connection with people spreading the Good News of our Lord.
