Taj Bazaar
some of the best stores in Virginia Beach are in strip malls; such is the case here. though it calls itself “international,” this market’s overwhelming majority of seductive stock is indian. Prepare to lose yourself in more exotic spices, dried goods, prepared and convenience foods, produce and snacks than you could ever consume. Cookware, jewelry, tchotchkes, DVDs and such round out the “bazaar” offerings. 5444 Virginia Beach Blvd., # 105, Virginia Beach. 757-671-7860

PLACE tO BUY LOCAL sEAFOOD
Roadside Pull-offs
Pack a cooler in your car this sum-mer; the best reasonably priced local seafood (Va. and N.C.) comes via those unexpected roadside pull-offs where vendors in pickup trucks offer heads-on shrimp for $4.99 per pound, bushel baskets teeming with freshly caught blue crabs, bags of littleneck clams and, often, a local waterman’s catch-of-the-day. these tailgate merchants ply their trade along heavily traveled summer routes—highways 13, 17, 158 and 168. Be prepared to steam, shuck and pick.

extreme Makeover: Home editionMost of us got our first peek inside the Hill-Burdette family’s house when Extreme Makeover: Home Edition aired in April. But dozens of volunteers who helped construct the Virginia Beach family’s ultra-modern new home were on hand in February to help host ty Pennington shout “Move that Bus!” the best part was that spacious new digs could hardly have gone to a more deserving family—foster parents who, in their spare time, make food to hand out freely to the homeless.
