Holy Family Catholic Schools Board of
Education is the recipient of $51,604 from the
Archbishop Kucera Grant Awards from the
Archdiocese of Dubuque Educational Development
Fund. The grant was awarded for tuition assistance to
those families who can least afford the cost of
attending a Catholic School. A portion of the grant was also directed towards
tuition assistance for minority students who qualify for Federal School Lunch
Program. Awards for these two programs totaled $500,000 for the 2016/17
program year. The Archbishop Kucera Grant Awards annually provides
$100,000 for faith formation resources and leadership development for faith
formation leaders, Catechists, Catholic school administrators and teachers. The
grant also covers one third of the program cost for adults enrolled in the
Archdiocesan IMPACT Program. The Archdiocesan Educational Development
Fund was developed for the purpose of supporting the educational programs of
the Archdiocese. This is the thirty-first year that grants have been awarded. Over
9.5 million dollars have been distributed since the Archdiocesan Educational
Development Fund was established. Grants are made possible through the
generous donations of contributors and parishioners throughout the
Archdiocese.
The Serra Club of Dubuque is again sponsoring an
appreciation night for altar servers from Dubuque
parishes. This event will be held on Saturday, February
18, 2017 at St. Columbkille Church. We begin with
Mass at 4:15 pm in the Church. Parents are asked to
drop off participants around 4 pm at the Church,
located at 1240 Rush Street. There will be a section
reserved in the front of Church for the altar servers.
After Mass, the altar servers will be allowed to
participate in a supervised, open-gym forum, where
they can shoot baskets, play bean bags and enjoy
activities with their friends. At 6:15 pm, supper will be served consisting of
pizza, drinks and treats. After supper there will be carnival-type
paddlewheel games with prizes for all to enjoy. The event will conclude at
7:30 pm and participants can be picked-up by their parents at the St.
Columbkille gym, which is just down the street from the Church. For more
information contact Dave Becker at 588-0114 or John Freund at 590-1203.
Thanks for supporting our altar servers!

Dear Parishioners,
Jesus calls us to a righteousness that surpasses a begrudging obedience to
God’s law. He calls us to a love that exceeds the minimum requirements
of a passing genuflection or merely fulfilling our Sunday obligation to
attend Mass. Jesus calls us to freely Love His Will, to love Him
completely, so as to truly love one another.
There is right and there is wrong. There is good and there is evil. Laws
can help protect the vulnerable from the powerful, for the good of all.
Fulfillment of human laws such as traffic laws, tax laws, simply requires
doing what the law mandates. Fulfillment of God’s laws requires that we
go beyond the letter of the law to the law of God’s love for each one of us.
Jesus teaches us how to live.
What are you doing to remove the anger, lust, and power in your life
that are incompatible with God’s love? Is disobedience, self-will, seeking
self-satisfaction, discouragement, deceit, addiction, criticism or fear
keeping you from God’s Love? These are poisons that spread like cancer,
destroying your eternal, spiritual life. Welcome Jesus’ unique and
unfailing love for you to bring you healing, health and holiness!
Blessings upon you,
Fr. Gabriel
Vocations Corner — February 12, 2017
The Vocations Committee invites you to pray for Vocations, especially those
to Priesthood or Religious Life!
Jesus I Trust In You! The most important building block of vocational dis-
cernment is simply trusting in God. This is an essential and absolutely crucial
element of Following God’s will because if we don’t trust in Him, then it will be
nearly impossible to want to follow where He leads. If however, we reach out in
trust and believe deep down that wherever He leads us is where we will be most
joyful in life (Which is 100% true!!!) then it becomes so much easier to desire to
follow His will in whatever it may be.
This of course is easier said that done. Sometimes, we have those days when
it’s really hard to trust, and the harder we try, the more stressed out we get.
We’ve all had those days. It doesn’t mean we have lost faith, but we might be
having a difficult time because of a situation we are in on that particular day.
During these times, it is always helpful to talk to a priest. One time, I has having
such a day and I asked a priest what I could do to help me through it. A very
wise priest told me that one of the most powerful things that I could do would be
to go into the Church, pick up a rosary, and simply pray the phrase “Jesus I Trust
In You” on each of the beads. As I began to pray this way more and more fre-
quently, it didn’t fix everything, but it did allow me to slowly let go of my fears
and my desire to control everything. It allowed me to step out into uncertain
waters because that was where Jesus was calling. So, there’s no reason why this
prayer can’t work for you too. JESUS I TRUST IN YOU!
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets.” — Mt 5:17
