What is hierarchy of needs theory ?

This theory is used to understand what motivates

people

How can we use this theory?

To motivate human behavior…

…and to identify what drives the

people …

… and to implement change initiatives.

Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory

Physiological needs

Are the physical requirements for human survival. 

Example:Air, water, and food are metabolic requirements.

Safety Needs When physical needs relatively satisfied, the individual's safety needs take precedence and dominate behavior.

Including:• Personal and financial security• Health and well-being• Safety net against accidents/illness and

adverse impacts

Example:A women needs to be protected and secured out of any crime.

Love and belonging needs The third level of human needs is interpersonal and involves feelings of belongingness.

Example : friends, family, spouse, lover

Self-Esteem NeedsSelf- esteem presents the typical human desire to be accepted and valued by others

2 versions of self-esteem:The lower version is the need for respect from othersThe higher version manifests itself as the need for self-respect

Example:

A man have a need for strength, mastery, self-confidence and freedom. Lack of these needs may lead to a weakness or helplessness.

Self-actualizationRealizing potential, fulfillment, seeking growth and high experiences.

Example:  One girl might have the strong desire to become an ideal mother. For others, it may be expressed in arts or sports.
