BCEF Grants In Action: 3D Printer As part of Brunswick Community Education Foundation’s inaugural grant cycle in 2015, funds were awarded for the purchase of a 3D printer for joint use by Brunswick High School’s Social Studies and Techni- cal Education departments. In Social Studies classes, the printer is being used to, “bring history to life.” Stu- dents in Luke Potter’s Middle Eastern Studies class were tasked with designing and printing an artifact or building symbolic of the region. Examples of student creations include the 2nd Temple at Jerusalem from artists’ renditions, and the Blue Mosque and a spiraling minaret from the Grand Mosque in Iraq. In the Tech- nical Education Department, students in Cindy Cygan’s 3D modeling class will be printing the exteriors of the Formula 1 model racing cars they designed. Senior Amelia Hawley has been using the 3D printer to produce parts for the robotic hand that she is developing while doing an independent study in engineering with teacher Richard Clarke.
