The month of May represents the beginning of the boating season for most of us and was truly a wonderful month full of activities.

Starting the month off was Sailpast. I think many people took pictures and I believe Cliff is in the process of posting many to the web site.

Greek Dinner hosted by Fleet Captain Brian McClements and Maureen was fun on Friday night with the weather cooperating. The Saturday activities started with goodies and coffee under the deck for members and sandwiches and coffee and a few Mimosas in the Club House for the Past Commodores and Dignitaries. Thank you to Brian and Maureen and all of their helpers for a wonderful evening!

I am pleased to say we covered almost every inch of the docks as we marched with the piper and members to lead them to the Breakwater. The Ceremonies were conducted by Vice Commodore Rob Langford and were kept short and light.

The weather cooperated for the most part for the Sailpast event even if my anchor had a mind of its own. Dinner was unbelievable with everyone, some 300 guests, enjoying a sit down buffet meal. Fun and socializing continued well into the morning on a number of boats.

Thank you to Rob and Vickie, and the supporting cast and crew, for a fabulous Sailpast.

Joanne and I continued in the Sailpast mode as we were invited to attend the RVYC Opening Day at Jericho the following weekend. The size of RVYC is notable, with over 1000 in attendance on the water. We enjoyed the afternoon aboard Deora, a 75 foot Monk, that had been maintained by one family over the last 20 years. The entire contingent from Seattle Yacht Club was aboard. I am told our snappy Salute and three cheers won us the best dressed boat of the day.

I would like to thank everyone who attended Stuart Buchanan’s Celebration of Life held on May 10th.

Our next big event was the Spring Cruise. I am told that you have to wear a tuxedo to make a good martini. With a little help from a number of members, specifically Jennifer Thornton, I was eventually able to make a satisfactory Shaken not Stirred Martini.

The event was so much fun, great activities, decorations, food, dancing, Scotch tasting, lanterns! and GREAT costumes. Thank you to Rear Commodore Conor Shankey and Karen, and all who helped to make it a fabulous event.

I am pleased to advise members that the Third and Final section of the Breakwater has now been installed. Take a minute and wander out and take a look; the final installation looks great.

As it is the beginning of Boating Season I feel it appropriate to remind members of a couple of Housekeeping items.

• Please be considerate to all members.

• Please control all dogs; having your dog on a retractable leash 18 feet away is a hazard.

• When setting up chairs on Docks please be considerate of other members and allow them a comfortable way to pass. It can be intimidating to new members and inconvenient to others.

• Remember to raft your tender to ensure all our members have room to tie up their boats.

I will leave some of the other items to our Shore and Outstations Director

I plan to hold one more open forum, Town Hall meeting, in June before everyone is gone on holidays. If you have any specific topics you would like the Board or myself to discuss please send me an email. I will confirm the date by evite.

Joanne and I look forward to seeing you on the water this season. We will continue a keen look out for member boats, their burgees, and the dipping of the Canadian Ensign. I think we owe one and are owed two bottles so far.

Happy and safe boating to all in 2014!

Sailpast 2014 is history!

Friday night we enjoyed a Greek Feast in the clubhouse spearheaded by Brian and Maureen McClements . Saturday morning, the Board hosted Past

Commodores in the clubhouse with food aptly handled by Frank and Dawn-Marie Plumptre, while members made their way to their boats with coffee and muffins provided by Frank Poratto.

Under grey clouds, the Commodore, Vice and Rear, together with their spouses, marched the docks behind the Piper, joined by the membership resplendent in Summer Uniform. The weather held until we finished the ceremonies amid the splendour of our new breakwaters but the skies opened as we proceeded to our boats. 62 vessels participated in the Sailpast salute and many then continued on a parade into Coal Harbour.

Once back at the docks, the tent filled quickly and over 300 people enjoyed the buffet dinner. After dinner many members took to dancing while still others went boat hopping while enjoying a nightcap.

I have received many positive comments since the event and the entire weekend can be considered a great success. Paige Ackerman acted as the land based official photographer.

I would like to thank everyone who helped and was involved, it was a group effort and that effort showed. A particular thank you to Conor & Karen Shankey, their assistance took a huge amount of work and pressure off me.

Spring Cruise Mission Debriefing

Spring Cruise was a huge success with 37 boats and 130 who braved the gale force winds on Friday. The Bond theme was in full swing kicking off on Friday night with the Commodore’s martini bar all the way to Sunday with the Bond trivia contest. However, it was the members of BYC that really made the weekend exceptional and fun with their creativity and participation.

Saturday morning started with our usual BYC games and we were also joined by Solitaire who provided private Taro card readings to almost 30 people during the day.

The kids really enjoyed Spy Camp organized by Jen Thornton and Bev Grantham and their team. We were particularly really pleased to see the level of participation by the 40 kids all weekend including their costumes.

On Saturday afternoon Tony Reid and Rod Thornton put their creative talent into the Bond Challenge - a six part obstacle course with paint gun sharp shooting, boat based “grenade” tossing, the poison river and other really fun events.

It was amazing to see a little outstation in the back of Howe Sound with men in tuxes, women in gowns plus the various villa ns and “Bond babes”. Kelly and Lisa Sullivan were had the best couple costume. Bob Goodheart was the best Bond, Karen Shankey was unrecognizable as the best “babe” and Gary Jone, Bill Iversen and Connie Valkenburg were tied for the best villains.

What was even more impressive was to see all those tuxes and gowns sitting down to a steak dinner at tables dressed up with chandeliers, white linen table cloths, silver and the most imaginative centerpieces. Wow, live goldfish inside a crystal creation! Saturday night ran late with a dance floor and huge excitement around the roulette and craps table under the crystal chandelier in the pavilion. Small tastes of scotch were also provided at a table on the side.

The weekend finished off on Sunday with the Bond Trivia competition. Maureen and Brian did an awesome job at organizing and holding the dog competition and finally we “wound down” with A dock beating B and C dock at volleyball.

There are too many people to honor and recognize who volunteered their time cooking and cleaning up breakfasts, lunch and dinner. The food was fantastic and rivaled any catered affair. Everyone contributed and thanks to you all!

We look forward to seeing you boating this summer and in the club events in September. Please check out some of the photos below.

Safety

Numerous emails sent, telephone calls made, Trident articles written, notices posted around the club, alternative inspection dates made available, website information updated, and we will still have a few members who by the time this trident article is published, will not have had their boats inspected and will have not communicated with us in any way. For the Safety of all of our members, their boats and in accordance with The Burrard Yacht Club Rules, all members must have their vessel successfully inspected prior to June 1, 2014. Any member who has not successfully completed all inspection requirements and therefore has not been granted a current BYC sticker will be assessed a monthly penalty of $100 from June 1 onwards. This penalty will be assessed for each full or partial month until said inspection is successfully completed. In addition to the above noted penalty, after June 30, 2014 any member whose safety inspection has not been successfully completed will lose all member privileges until such time as their inspection is successfully completed. Such privileges will include mooring, use of outstations and the use of the tidal grid. Those members who are identified as not having passed their inspection will be required to surrender their burgee. At that time, a list of the delinquent members will be posted in the clubhouse.

Garth RavenSafety Director

Outstations

As this is the start of the busy boating season I would like to take this opportunity to remind members of several rules that are especially relevant through the summer;

At outstations where rafting is possible and allowed, rafting is mandatory to accommodate other club members. If you will not welcome another boat rafted to you then you will have to move off the dock no matter how long or short you have been there. There are no exceptions. It is all members’ responsibility to accommodate as many club boats at our outstations as possible. If you are rafting to another boat please be considerate crossing the other boat

We may encounter issues with rafting at Snug. The False Creek Yacht Club has leased the other side of the “U” and they also have rafting privileges. As such we have to work with them to accommodate rafting. It is “first come, first served”. Please be good neighbours and try to work out conflicts.

At any outstation tenders should not take up dock space such that other members cannot moor their boats (taking up dock space or blocking access

such as the inner dock at Pender). You may have to move your tender off and find other moorage for it. Again we want to accommodate as many members boats as possible so, where possible, take the smallest slip into which you can fit (even if the view isn’t as good).

Familiarize yourself with the rules for length of stay, particularly at busy outstations like Gibsons, Snug and Pender. Ensure you sign in and respect the length-of-stay limitations.

Dogs need to be fully under your control at all times at outstations (and at Gostick as well). If you are requested to leash your dog you must do so immediately. You may love dogs, others may not. You are responsible for your dog’s actions and for picking up after it.

This all comes down to respect for your fellow club members (and that goes both ways). If you are considerate of others the way you would like them to be considerate of you then we will all enjoy our outstations (and we won’t have to write more rules)

Thanks,

Colin Dunwoody Outstation Director

Admirals Club

May 30th marked a year since our first official Admiral’s Club meeting. It has been an interesting year and we have managed to cover some of the items that you ladies were asking for. We still have a long list and hope we can take a few more items off the list in the coming year.

All of the new breakwaters are in!

Keel Boat

We have now purchased the Martin 242, and it is now on its dolly on the breakwater. This purchase could not have progressed without the support of the membership, the list below are the members that donated money to the purchase. There is another list of members that have supported the program with donation of items for the auction. We had a dinner on the breakwater to show off the boat and will have a plaque installed in the vessel with sponsors names (there is still time to add your name to the list).

History

Past Commodore Jim Mercier set out on a voyage to discover (from the money end) how the Directors in 1977 managed to fund our move to the North Shore.

Jim has knowledge of the history and the detective skills to root out the facts. For some this may be seem like dry reading but it puts aside a lot of speculation. This also determines who some of the players were that made this seemingly impossible event happen. For BYC members 1977 was our Independence Day and I refer to the Directors and members of the day as our “Founding Fathers”.

In today’s money the mortgage of $700,000.would amount to many millions of dollars. This was a feat of courage and fierce determination. Thank PC Jim for enlightening us.

The Purchase of 10 Gostick Place

Back in 2004, I attempted to put together the details of the purchase of the land for our main station. After many conflicting stories and dead-ends, I put the task aside.

At our recent sailpost, I had a conversation with our 100 year old member, Don Simpson, who was able to fill in some blanks.

I realised that it was time to finish the job that I had started. The following history is stated as follows:

• If I am positive of my facts, they are stated as such; • If I am reasonably sure of my facts, names, etc. will be mentioned, always subject to correction; • If I am not sure that my facts are correct, I ask for input from members who still may have such

information.

November 17, 1976Interim agreement to purchase for a price of $648,800, with a down payment of $300,000.

December 10, 1976Letter from Vancity, addressed to Burrard Yacht Club, to the attention of Dick Blockberger states that a loan in the amount of $648,800 is approved. It is to be covered by a “First Mortgage Debenture” and have an appraisal to confirm a value of $1,050,000. Letter was signed be “D.W. Nelson, Chief Loans Officer”

April 15, 1977 New interim agreement – purchase price of $648,800 with a down payment of $450,000. The vendor had to complete various work on the site, after which the balance of $198,800 would be paid. April 29, 1977 was to be sale completion date.

TFL mortgage to Techran Securities Ltd. (vendor) signed by Malc Nelson (President) and Al Dixon (Secretary), in the amount of $198,800.

Note that this mortgage states that “this mortgage is granted subject to a prior registered mortgage in favor of Vancity Saving Credit Union in the amount of $700,000, of which $450,000 has been advanced and of which $250,000 is intended to be the amount of the second advance.”

NOTE – this Vancity mortgage referred to above, was never registered, nor were personal guarantees asked for!

How was it that Vancity was so comfortable with this loan? Rumor said that some person(s) had put up personal property – I could not confirm.

June 7, 1977Application for registry at Land Registry. Registered in name of Trident Foreshore Lands Ltd.

Don Simpson stated that during construction, we were running short of funds. At a meeting (which he wasn’t able to attend) 10 members agreed to put up $5,000 each, for a total of $50,000, to help out.

About a year later, 3 or more of the original 10, complained because they weren’t getting interest on their money. Since I don’t know all of the 10, nor can I confirm the three, I will not mention names.

What I have confirmed from 3 different sources, is that Max Krainer put up $50,000, and paid out the original 10. It is my understanding that Max received no interest on his loan.

I hope that I have summarised this event accurately. If I have made any mistakes, or if any reader has any knowledge of more details, please contact me at [email protected].

Jim Mercier, P.C

P.S Don Simpson told me that the last sheds to be moved, had pilings in the way. “Someone” went over in the early AM on moving day, and the pilings were cut off at the waterline. Magic!
