•The setting of The Giver By: Lois Lowry, takes place in a utopian society witch is a perfect world. It is almost December in the story, maybe late November.•In the community it is very structured and each family unit gets to kids, a girl and a boy. The adults work. And the kids go to school until they are 12•The setting also takes place in the Annex. (This is where Jonas gets his training done.) This is where the giver lives. It is a private building that is used especially for giving and receiving memories. It has fancy furniture with comfy chairs, and has thousands of books on book cases, lining the walls. There is a bed which Jonas lays on when he receives memories. There are a few very plush and comfortable chairs which Jonas sits in when talking to the Giver about many different subjects.

Jonas-

Physical- Brown hair, blue eyes, average height, 11-12 years old.

Characteristic traits- Nervous about what will happen in the future. Jonas is the new receiver of memory because, he is intelligent is courageous, and has integrity. He also has strange powers that he does not understand. He is always ready to try new things even if it makes him face many challenges.

Descriptive traits- Jonas is a protagonist, also he is a major character, because the story revolves around him. Dynamic character because he undergoes inner change when he becomes the receiver.

Lily-

Physical- Lily has big brown eyes, dirty blond hair, Jonas little sister. She is an 8.

Characteristic traits- Always exited for what will happen next. She is also growing up fast. She enjoys helping at the nurturing center, with her father. She also enjoys listening and telling stories.

Descriptive traits- Lily is a protagonist, also she a minor character. Static character because she doesn’t change much within herself.

The Receiver of memory. Or The Giver-

Physical- He is a old and wise man. He as many wrinkles and is younger than he appears, because the memories take a tole on his body making him look older than he actually is. He has gray hair and a beard. He likes to answer Jonas’ questions about almost everything. He was the receiver of memory, before Jonas was selected.

Characteristics traits-He is lonely because he can't share his work with citizens in the community, and he is cynical and frustrated at times because he knows that the people gave up too much when they chose Sameness. He loves Jonas and the people in the community.

Descriptive traits- Major character. Dynamic character because as he gives memories to Jonas his mind changes while giving away the memories. He is a protagonist.

This is the Giver. He is an old and wise man.

Asher- Physical traits – Asher wears clothing with no color, his eyes are dark. He is physical the same has everyone else in the community.

Character traits- He is 13. He is a bit childish. He normally mixes up words. He is normally late for school . He also tends to throw his bike on the ground witch is against the rules, meaning he does not always follow the rules of the community.

Descriptive traits- He is Jonas best friend. Also he is always looking forward in the future. Also Asher is a minor character. A dynamic character because as he and Jonas got heir separate ways Asher doesn’t treat Jonas the same way as he did before. He is a protagonist.

Father-

Physical- Jonas father is a tall man. He is also a Nurturer, he cares for infants in the first years of life.

Characteristics traits- He is caring and supportive. Also he does not believe in the word love, because he believes that it is to broad of a word, and is inappropriate to use.

Descriptive traits- Father is a minor character. A static character because he doesn't’t change even after Jonas changes. He is a protagonist.

Rising action-The rising action was when Jonas got the job or responsibility of the receiver. That is when Jonas finally see’s the truth about the community. Also when Jonas first saw real colors instead of the usual black and white, and he started feeling things like the warmth of the sun, then later he started feeling emotions. These are the rising action parts of the story.

This is what happened when Jonas was throwing the apple to Asher.

Climax-The climax is when Jonas realizes that when his father “releases” new children he actually kills them. His frustration with his community and his desire to change it have been growing steadily, has he learns about the past, and finally Jonas cannot accept the community's way of life, and Jonas thinks its unfair! He determines to change things.

Falling action-I think the falling action in The Giver would be when Jonas and Gabriel were going down the hill on the sled at the end of the book. That's when they found the city they were going to, also I think when Jonas stole Gabriel, and they escaped the community was falling action also.

One conflict in the story The Giver is that Jonas is struggling with the community and disagrees with how the community is runned, he thinks that it is un fair that the community went in to sameness. This conflict is man vs. society.

Another conflict is, self vs. self. Jonas struggles because he does not know what is best for the society. Having grown up believing that his society was perfect, Jonas's decision to leave the society and release all of the memories takes a lot of thought and, courage. He had to chose what was best for the society.

A man vs. nature conflict could be when, humans are trying to get rid of pain and suffering, as well as colors and all of these things like twins who will look exactly the same. They constantly battle against things that would be normal in our lives today. But is an issue in there community.

Also another issue in the story is that Jonas was picked to be the receiver of memory. Even though it is a well respected job. He misses being able to be with friends. A part of him is telling him that he needs to receive the memory, and another part of him is telling him to run away, and leave it all behind. He does not know what to do and this is an on going conflict. Because Jonas has a hard time making decisions. This conflict would be a, man vs. fate conflict.

Theme-Definition: The subject of a talk, a piece of writing, a person's thoughts, or an exhibition; a topic.

The main theme of The Giver is that differences should be celebrated instead of feared. An example is when Jonas is given the memory of grandparents, and experiences love for the first time. Then the Giver said, "I will. I am left with a vague wisp of that one; and I have many other memories of families, and holidays, and happiness. Of love." (p. 125) Jonas commented and said that it would be weird to live with grandparents, but the liked the meaning of love. A second example is when Jonas’s father releases the newborn twin.  Before Jonas sees the release, he comments on why the identical twins are considered unnecessary in the community. The Giver said, "Well, they can't have two identical people around! Think how confusing it would be!" Jonas chuckled. Definition-A formal statement of a decision or expression of opinion put before or adopted by an assembly such as the community making a decision. The resolution of The Giver is when Jonas leaves the community with Gabe (the baby). He releases all of the memories that the Giver gave him. By doing this Jonas basically gives all the memories to the community, because he left the community boundaries. This quote tells us that memory's are forever and that the will not be lost, they will be given to the community. This is the quote: “If you were to be lost in the river, Jonas, your memories would not be lost with you. Memories are forever.”

The mood of this novel is apprehensive. We see through the eyes of the protagonist, Jonas. In the beginning of the story, Jonas’s apprehension is centered on what assignment he will be given during the Ceremony of Twelve. Later in the story, the causes of his apprehension are more serious.
