The infl uences of John Nash, one of the leading exponents of Regency architecture, can be seen throughout Royal Leamington Spa. His vision and fl air are largely responsible for giving Leamington
its distinctive character.
“The Regency style of architecture is often regarded as the height of elegance. The architects and builders of the time played with the established forms and proportions of the Georgian house which were adopted on elegant terraces, paired suburban villas and detached houses. When I came to design Regents Green I was keen to create a layout and similar style of development which had its own identity and sense of place but was
bespoke to the site and its setting and would be recognisable as a part of Royal Leamington Spa.
For this reason the houses and apartments were designed to refl ect a contemporary Regency style incorporating the elegant window opening proportions of that period but with modern windows set into mainly rendered façades with slate covered overhanging roofs. In addition, Regency styled verandas and balconies were incorporated, supported by the typical decorative ironwork frames. The houses and apartments have all been designed to read well together as a townscape and to share views over the central landscaped area and the open
space beyond, with boundary walls and railings helping to defi ne the spaces”.
