“For Private Circulation Only” Vol. 28 Issue 1029

The School of HumilityBy Sis. Eden Pagalunan - Samoy

Hesitation played like a tug of war in my mind whether I accept my schedule of writing or not, it’s not that I had no time nor have no idea about the topic but to write something that you have a little of it or none at all is demeaning. I am still a student in the school of humility in the kinder level in my long years of being a Chris-tian. According to James M. Barrie, “Life is a long lesson in humility. It’s a long way to finish in this school where Jesus exemplified this char-acter like a sacrificial lamb.

The Holman Bible Dictionary de-fines "humility" as: "A person-al quality in which an individual shows dependence on God and re-spect for other persons." At times, many people are candidate for valedictorian in the school of “Me, Myself and I.” Jesus admon-ished not to follow the example of the Scribes and Pharisees. Matthew 23:6-7: They love the best places at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues, "greetings in the marketplaces, and to be called by men, 'Rabbi, Rabbi.' In our “put yourself first” culture, it is easy to fall into the trap of thinking too highly of ourselves. Instead of looking for ways to build others up, we are more concerned to build ourselves up, striving to be the center of attention and putting others down in order to ele-vate our own reputation, or spend the majority of our time trying to build up our popularity on social platforms. In Philippians 2:3: Do nothing from self

ishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than your-selves. A Christian reveals true humility by showing the gentleness of Christ, by being always

ready to help others, by speaking kind words and performing unselfish acts, which Jesus did exactly. In Romans 12:3 Paul exhorts us: For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think… When we approach oth-ers with an attitude of true humil-ity, we reflect the glory of God and reveal the nature of Christ. Remem-ber this, it was pride that changed angels into devils; it is humility that

makes men as angels. (St. Augustine) please turn to page 4

The School ...from page 1

Jesus Christ, the greatest Teacher of Humility, lived His life as the best example as to how to live in humility. Let us take one of Jesus lesson in Luke 14:7-11. To be humble is to take the lowly place: "So He (Jesus) told a parable to those who were invited, when He noted how they chose the best places, saying to them: {8} "When you are invited by anyone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in the best place, lest one more honorable than you be invited by him; {9} "and he who invited you and him come and say to you, 'Give place to this man,' and then you begin with shame to take the lowest place. {10} "But when you are invited, go and sit down in the lowest place, so that when he who invited you comes he may say to you, 'Friend, go up higher.' Then you will have glory in the presence of those who sit at the table with you. {11} "For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted." Drop out all your subjects in the school of “Me, Myself and I” and, be a valedictorian in the school of humility. Ask for the grace to tune out the “me, me, me” messages of our culture, andfocus on giving glory to God by being humble and building others up, instead of ourselves.

HEBREWS 4:16 16Let us therefore draw near with boldness unto the throne of grace, that we mayreceive mercy, and may find grace to help us in time of need
