Her Naked Skin is challenging and epic and human. Some parts are hard to watch. Other moments blossom with the blush of new love. The story is soft and hard, full and empty, peaceful and violent. Contradictions are constant. Turmoil is constant. Just like life. Welcome to this exciting story where women take center stage in the struggle for equal treatment and the right to vote. Welcome to 1913.

When I chose this script in 2015, the possibility of the first woman in history being sworn in as U.S. President shimmered with clarity. The potential of a woman in the White House was real, and women voters were a much discussed factor. Then in October of 2016, calls for women to be denied their right to vote circulated in the news. The tweet #repealthe19th circulated across the country, a reference to the U.S. constitutional amendment that granted women’s suffrage less than 100 years ago. Voting rights, voting conspiracies, voter fraud, voter disenfranchisement and voter suppression are national topics every four years. Welcome to 2017.

MARY LU AND DICK AFT Cincinnati became home to Dick and Mary Lu Aft in 1987 when Dick began his 14-year presidency of the United Way of Greater Cincinnati. That was also the year that Mary Lu began 28 years of Friends of the Public Library Leadership. As Dick continues to teach, consult and write books about United Way history, Mary Lu still spends three days each week volunteering as a Library Friend. She is also Vice Chair of the Fifty Year Club alumni association of their shared alma mater, Knox College. Dick serves as a member of the CCMpower Executive Committee and Chair of the Community Advisory Board of UC’s Hoxworth’s Blood Center.

Mary Lu and Dick consider CCM “their conservatory” and believe it to be one of the best in the world. They should know, as they have enjoyed performances all over the world while working as a volunteer team committed to increasing non-profit services to people in need.

If it hadn’t been for the investment that others made in our education, we wouldn’t be pictured here. Now, it’s our turn. We plan to support CCM for our lifetimes. Then, our planned gift will endow our current level of CCMpower support for future generations of talented students. So much was done for us. It’s the least we could, and should, do for others.

Rebecca Lenkiewicz is an acclaimed playwright whose work has been performed all over the world. She was the first living female playwright to have an original play—the celebrated Her Naked Skin, which explores the suffragette movement—performed on the National Theatre’s Olivier stage. Other plays include Soho – A Tale of Table Dancers, The Night Season, Shoreditch Madonna and The Painter. Adaptations include An Enemy of the People, Ghosts and The Turn of the Screw. Her recent play The Invisible opened at the Bush Theatre, London in summer 2015 and the Out of Joint production of Jane Wenham opened at Watford Palace Theatre before going on a UK tour and to the Arcola Theatre London in autumn 2015. 

Rebecca also writes for film, television and radio. She co-wrote the screenplay for Ida with director Pawel Pawlikowski. Ida has won numerous awards including an Oscar, BAFTA and Spirit award for Best Foreign Language Film 2015, and Best Film awards at the London, Warsaw and Gydynia Film Festivals. She is currently writing a screenplay for Kristin Scott Thomas to direct and has just collaborated on a screenplay, I Want To Be Like You, with Bulgarian director Konstantin Bojanov, and The Sweet Life for Russian director Alexander Zeldovitch. She is developing an original drama series for ITV Studios, adapting a book for Scott Free/BBC T.V. for Kevin MacDonald and is writing a screenplay Spy Princess for Haimark Films. Rebecca has written extensively for radio including a serialisation of Dracula for BBC4.

THE VILLAGE NEWSALUMNI APPLAUSE

Alumna Sarah Ellen Stephens (BFA Drama, 2008) recently played a lead role in Lil’ Benny, an award-winning short film released in 2016. She is set to appear in upcoming episodes of Amazon Prime’s new series Z: The Beginning of Everything and Spike Lee’s T.V. series She’s Gotta Have It. On stage, Stephens has appeared in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Doubt: A Parable.

Composer, writer and lyricist for upcoming Broadway musical Bandstand, alumnus Richard Oberacker (BFA Drama, 1993) is currently conducting Cirque du Soleil’s Ká in Las Vegas. Oberacker’s conducting credits include Cirque’s Dralion and national tours of Disney’s The Lion King, Show Boat, and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Music of the Night and Cats. Oberacker recently composed the score for a new musical adaptation of The Great Gatsby, which will premiere in Tokyo in 2017.

Alumnus Cooper Thornton (BFA Drama, 1992) recently played the role of Jim Whittaker in the feature film Sully, starring Tom Hanks. Thornton has also appeared in feature films Gone Girl, The Submarine Kid and Atlas Shrugged. An actor in film, T.V. and theatre, Thornton has also appeared on CBSs NCIS: New Orleans, NBC’s Parks and Recreation and stage productions of A Christmas Carol and Twelfth Night.

The force is strong with alumnus Nicholas Lipari (BFA E-Media, 2012), who served as assistant editor on the latest film in the popular Star Wars saga, Rogue One. Local news station WCPO-T.V. spotlighted Lipari’s work on the new film in a feature story posted online. Lipari also served as the assistant editor on the recent live action adaptation of Disney’s The Jungle Book.

GENERAL INFORMATIONCCM BOX OFFICE: Located in the CCM Atrium, the Box Office is open Monday through Friday, noon-5:30 p.m.; Saturday, noon-4 p.m.; and one hour prior to curtain for Mainstage performances. MasterCard, Visa and Discover cards are accepted. CCM Box Office, P.O. Box 210003, Cincinnati, OH 45221-0003; 513-556-4183.

PARKING: Convenient parking is available in the CCM Garage at the base of Corry Boulevard off of Jefferson Avenue. Additional parking is available in garages throughout the UC campus. Any questions concerning on-campus parking should be directed to UC Parking Services at 513-556-2283.

TAX CREDIT: If you find that you cannot attend your performance, your tickets may be donated for tax credit as a charitable contribution. Simply notify the Box Office prior to the performance to release your seats, and give your name and address. A tax donation receipt will be mailed to you.

EMERGENCY CALLS: If you are likely to receive an emergency call during a performance, please leave your name and seat location with the House Manager. If you have a beeper, we also request that you leave it with the House Manager along with your seat number so as not to disturb the audience and performers. In case of emergencies, this will help us locate you as quickly as possible.

LOST AND FOUND: 513-556-9413

HOUSE POLICIES: The House Manager has been instructed to minimize the disturbance to patrons already seated when accommodating latecomers. The director and producer of each production select times that are least likely to interrupt the performance, and latecomers will be seated only during these times. Latecomers who miss these opportunities will not be admitted until intermission. Children under the age of six are not to be admitted.

CAMERAS, PHONES AND RECORDING DEVICES: The use of cameras, with or without flashes, recording devices, cellular phones and other electronic devices inside the theater is strictly prohibited. Please leave them with the House Manager.

SMOKING AND REFRESHMENTS: Smoking and refreshments are not permitted in the theater. Effective January 1, 2006, smoking is prohibited inside all buildings, athletics facilities and vehicles owned,

operated or leased by the University of Cincinnati. Smoking is also prohibited within 25 feet of all university building entrances, exits, air intakes and operable windows. Smoking shall not be permitted on any bridge, overpass or enclosed walkway.

HEARING ENHANCEMENT: Telex listening devices are available for checkout during performances in both Patricia Corbett Theater and Corbett Auditorium. Please inquire at the Box Office.

WHEELCHAIR SEATING: Wheelchair seating is available in both theaters. Seating is limited, so reservations should be made with the Box Office when ordering tickets. These seats are subject to availability.
