Campbell residents and at- tendees Annemarie and Glen Lynch said prior to the forum, they were only familiar with two of the candidates. “What’s interesting about this election cycle is the last time there were two open seats, there were 14 candidates, it was huge,” Glen said. “So now we have this manageable little group so we felt like this was a great opportunity to kind of see the other two [can- didates we are unfamiliar with] and really clarify it. I think it did for me.” Each of the candidates were given two minutes to introduce themselves. In the panel debate, the candidates were asked a se- ries of questions submitted by audience members. Each candi- date could respond without inter- ruption. Questions were sorted by selected LWV members based on relevance and significance. All of the candidates were available for one-on-one conver- sations with attendees following the debate. The following is a summari- zation of each of the candidates’ goals, if elected, and responses to audience questions in the order of which they introduced them- selves. Phil Reynolds In his opening statement, Reynolds focused on his life as a family man, an air force veteran City Council hopefuls answer the people by Rain Stites and a current engineer for AT&T. “When I’m elected, I wanna take on the following” he said to the audience, “I wanna take on homeless, I wanna take on den- sity, crime and transportation in no particular order except for the homeless.” Reynolds continued on to describe the issue as a travesty, noting it would be his top prior- ity to alleviate those living on the streets and in their cars. While he understands cost is a factor, he said it is the moral thing to do. With years of experience of serving on the Planning Com- mission and as a volunteer for his community, Reynolds said this gives him a diverse background in terms of experience level. His time at the Planning Commission is spent studying new ways of thinking about de- velopment. “One thing I’ve learned over the years is you don’t wanna stop growth and you can’t stop growth,” he said. Reynolds continued that while it is important to pay atten- tion to high density, it is also im- portant to protect medium density development, including duplexes and low density development, in- cluding single family housing. In terms of the Dell Avenue area plan, Reynolds said he is not supportive of it as it currently ex- ists. “I’m not happy with the fact that the portion of the commer- cial area west of Winchester was added to the plan, I think that was a tremendous error in judgement … I like the fact that the Coun- cil is talking about blending it into the General Plan, I think that would be a smart move,” he said continuing that community input should outweigh Council and Planning Commission decisions. In terms of the Civic Center plan, Reynolds said he thinks the library should be moved to the Community Center as it would better integrate technology and give access to seniors. Reynolds described impact fees as a catch 22. “It kind of de- feats the purpose of attempting to create affordable housing,” he said. While Reynolds said he has not taken any money from devel- opers for his campaign, he would be honored to take contributions from community members. Donald Young At first, Donald Young smiled and informed the audi- ence his nervousness may be evident but he hoped to overcome it throughout the forum. He attributed his intellectual and logical mindset to his back- ground in medical biology and engineering. “That’s part of the reason I think that if I get in the City Council, I’ll have a much more dynamic perspective on things,” he said. Young continued that he al- ways aims to listen to a variety of opinions before making deci- sions. He uses this information along with his own research to craft the proper approach for team meetings. “In the end, I think it leads me to a very good position for when I vote, you can believe there’s a lot of thought behind it,” he said. City Council candidates let their voices be heard in what turned out to be a rather calm de-bate.

The League of Women Vot-ers hosted a public forum last Monday, Sept. 19, in an effort to help Campbell residents and vot-ers get acquainted with the indi-viduals running for the two open City Council positions.

“I feel that the composition of the City Council is important to all of us who live in Campbell and since we have two out of the five seats turning over this time, it’s a pretty important election,” said Campbell resident and at-tendee Steven Teeter. “I think it’s gonna take us a while to get to know these candidates, I think this is really only a first step.”

For some attendees of the fo-rum, this was their first encounter with the candidates and their in-tentions if elected.

Campbell residents and at-tendees Annemarie and Glen Lynch said prior to the forum, they were only familiar with two of the candidates.

My thanks to the many of you who have congratulated me on continuing the Campbell Express in Sally’s honor. It was a steep learning curve but I think I have mastered it!

Very soon we will be announcing a change of ownership at the CEX-I think you will be surprised and pleased to know that the paper will continue with fresh young energy.

Stephon Hansen, one of our associate editors, has spearheaded the drive to interview the City Council candidates for the November election. We have featured two to date - Phil Reynolds and Rich Waterman. Look for additional articles to follow. Our newest Staff Writer, Rain Stites, has been covering the City Council election and will continue to follow the debates. Judith Steinle continues to report on the City Council and Planning Commission meetings each week. This is a challenging task and she has risen to it admirably.

Now retired from teaching, I am moving into volunteer-land. I

am helping out at Union Middle School (where many of my former students are in band) as well as planning to work with Campbell Middle School, Dartmouth Middle School and others in the area. I am blessed with a decent retirement income and feel it is time to “pay it forward.” Of course I will continue to be a member of the Country Woman’s Club of Campbell - I am a legacy member, as my grandmother, Eola Howe, was President in 1964 and I was President 50 years later, in 2004. Come check out our big Estate Sale this weekend as well as going to dine at Mama Mia’s next Tuesday to support our Endowment Fund. Frank Leamy generously donates a portion of that day’s sales to CWCC each year. Thank you, Frank!

From where I live in Almaden Valley the Loma Prieta fire is highly visible and quite scary. The air has been filled with smoke. A reminder of how vulnerable so much of California is after five years of drought.

there’s a lottery system, we’re al-ways gonna be behind,” he said, seemingly speaking directly to the developers.

Impact fees, Young said, must be allocated toward com-munity needs. Better allocating use of these fees toward helping affordable housing is something he said he’d like to target.

In terms of the Dell Avenue area plan, Young refrained from answering as he currently sits on the Planning Commission.

He did speak in favor of the Civic Center master plan but re-alized it could not be properly financed. He does however want it to be as “walkable” as possible.

“I like it where it is, I just think it needs to be updated,” he said.

Financially, Young said, the library built as a semi-community center could have great commu-nity benefit.

Young admitted to receiving one donation for his campaign, which he said he did not request, from a developer. The amount was not disclosed.

Rich WatermanIn his introduction, Rich Wa-

terman described his past expe-rience as a Councilmember and ensured his ability to work with a group of people to get things done.

In his time on the Council, Waterman reminded the audience of his peers’ and his decision to raise sales taxes, not only help-ing the City avoid bankruptcy but also helping fund a number of amenities including Stojanovich Family Park.

“I think I have a pretty broad

experience, which not only is the word ‘experience,’ but the ability to work with my peers,” he said to the audience.

Development throughout the area, Waterman said, has to be discussed and carried out respon-sibly.

It’s important, he said, to pay attention to design of projects when talking about future de-velopment. Some of the require-ments already set in place have helped, said Waterman, but dis-cussion and research about bet-tering these requirements should occur.

Waterman was worried about giving any specific stance on the Dell Avenue area issue. He said, generally speaking however, most everything done should ex-ist in the General Plan.

“Having a new plan is not necessarily bad,” Waterman said in response to public concern over the issue of changing plans.

Improvement of the Civic Center, however, Waterman said the big picture needs to be taken into consideration when thinking about cost of development. Cer-tain things, he explained, need to be prioritized.

“We’re not going to get $160 million right from the get go and we have to be realistic,” he said. “That’s again, a big theme with me.”

Impact fees, Waterman said, should always be up for Council discussion.

“Now the question is, how do you adjust if we do go through another downturn and we over do it on impact fees? Can we rein it in?” Waterman said.

While Waterman did not directly answer whether he has received donations from develop-ers for his campaign, he said it is important to receive support from everyone, not just a small group of supporters.

Susan LandryWhat differentiates Landry

from the other candidates? “Well, most notable is I’m a woman,” she said as laughter filled the room.

In a more serious tone, she described her immense commu-nity involvement.

“Well, one, I have never served as a Councilmember, I’ve always been kind of on the other side of the table,” she said.

Landry described her current and past efforts as a community member in addressing develop-mental projects within Campbell. She told the audience of her 30-year experience as a landscape ar-chitect and about her involvement in public works projects aimed toward community benefit.

“I’m running because people that I work with and deal with on these community projects feel very frustrated about what’s go-ing on with City Hall and several people had asked me to run,” Landry said.

She continued to describe the challenge of maintaining Camp-bell’s small town character and financial stability simultaneously.

“Campbell needs Council-members who are experienced working with the complexities of development projects and have the ability to create imple-mentable solutions,” she said.

Landry described Campbell

as “landlocked,” in the sense that any developmental expansion is limited. This makes deciding where to develop tricky.

“We need housing, we need jobs, so where do we put them? In our neighborhoods? In our open space? Along freeways or transit quarters? Main streets?” Landry asked the audience. “These are challenges and I think to preserve our neighborhoods and our com-munity and our open space and have housing and have jobs, there isn’t a lot of options but to go up, and it’s unfortunate but that is kind of what’s gonna have to hap-pen.”

And it has to happen wisely, she said. Setbacks must be imple-mented along with planning ac-cording to location and long-term impacts.

Housing design itself, in terms of affordability and density, is important, Landry said.

“A lot of it is finding some really creative architects and en-gineers that can start helping us to deal with the size of units, what’s available and come up with some alternatives - think outside the box,” she said.

Landry described her con-cern with the Dell Avenue plan.

“This is actually how I end-ed up running,” she laughed.

She explained issues with the plan including the creek, the set-backs and public transportation accessibility.

“I do think that we need to take a lot more time and consid-eration in the layout of the proj-ect. I have actually drawn some drawings and submitted them to Council as some proposed sug-gestions,” she said.

The Civic Center plan pos-es other concerns with Landry, mostly about traffic circula-tion and lack of integration with downtown.

In terms of impact fees, Landry is focused outside of Campbell.

“I’d like to see an impact fee applied to the cities surrounding us that are approving projects with things like unavoidable sig-nificant impact to traffic at certain intersections that affect Camp-bell,” Landry said.

Within Campbell, Landry hopes to find a balance and would like to move forward with the dis-cussion if elected.

Landry said she has not yet been approached by developers for campaign donations. She said if she is approached, she would be cautious about the donator and how much money they offered.

City Council... continued from page 1

Sometimes history can be staring you in the face and you may not even realize it. Uncle Leo, who was married to my Aunty Fumi, would visit us from time to time. He would sometimes talk about his experiences from World War II. Years ago, I wanted to be a fighter pilot. When I learned that Uncle Leo was a fighter pilot, it caught my attention. As a naïve middle school student, I asked him if he got into any dogfights. He responded that it was towards the end of the war. While that was not the answer I wanted to hear, I also knew that was a reality. One did not always encounter enemy fighters. The World War I ace, Rene Fonck, wrote that he went about two months without encountering an enemy fighter.

Another story he shared was when they encountered a group of German jet fighters. In response to the jet fighters, the Red Tails pilots formed a defense formation, the Lufbery circle. After a while the enemy jets broke off contact; this may not be the stuff of Hollywood. While I may have been disappointed at the lack of a dogfight, others who I shared the

story with commented that he was probably glad to get out of that encounter alive. That’s a good point. It’s only in the movies that the heroes always survive. In real life the good guys can be killed.

Around 2011, I decided to reestablish contact with Uncle Leo. One question had been nagging me. Aunty Fumi’s funeral bulletin said she was a member of the Tuskegee Women’s Auxiliary group; was Uncle Leo a Tuskegee Airman or was there another group of African American fighter pilots? With the help of the Tuskegee Airman’s website and an Aviation website, I was able to reestablish contact with Uncle Leo. He was indeed a Red Tails pilot. There was no other African American fighter pilot group at the time. In what must be a small world, the Aviation website source, who gave me Uncle Leo’s phone number, lived about 45 minutes away from him. He wrote that Uncle Leo was his cousin.

It is interesting how events unfolded. I could have searched for years without finding him. Modern technology has given us

the web which makes searching much easier. It was also fortunate that I happened to find a website maintained by Uncle Leo’s cousin. Facebook is a wonderful tool for helping to keep up with family news. That is how I learned of Uncle Leo’s death. Someone posted the news recently. In the ancient times of snail mail and telephone, the news may not have traveled as fast.

In a 2014 issue of the Campbell Express, the late Sally Howe was gracious enough to publish my article about history in your “backyard.” Whether you realize it or not there may be people in your circle of family and friends who were witness to history.

Thank you, Lt. Col. Leo Gray, for your service to this country. Thank you also for providing the younger generation a window into history.

Those who wish to learn more about this remarkable figure should go to the obituary article at this link: http://www.sun-sentinel.com/local/broward/fl-tuskegee-airman-leo-grey-obit-20160923-story.html

CITY OF CAMPBELLNOTICE OF HEARING

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the City Council for the City of Campbell has set the hour of 7:30 p.m. or soon thereafter on Tuesday October 4, 2016, in the City Hall Council Chambers, 70 N. First Street, Campbell, California, as the time and place for a public hearing to receive citizen comments concerning the resolutions adopting housing mitigation fees for residential developments and commercial linkage fees for non-residential developments. The fees initiated or revised by this resolution are reasonably related to the need for affordable housing associated with development projects in the City of Campbell. A copy of the proposed fees and data regarding the need for affordable housing associated with development in the City of Campbell, including the cost of affordable housing and funds available to provide affordable housing, is available for review at the office of Community Development Department, Campbell, California. The adoption of the resolutions is not a project under the California Environmental Quality Act because the resolutions create a governmental funding mechanism which does not involve any commitment to a specific project that may result in a potentially significant effect on the environment. (CEQA Guidelines Section 15378(b)(4).)

PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that if you challenge the adoption of these resolutions in court, you may be limited to raising only those issues you or someone else raised at public hearings before the City of Campbell or in written correspondence delivered to the City of Campbell at, or prior to, the public hearing.

Interested persons may appear and be heard at said hearing. In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, listening devices are available for all meetings held in the Council Chambers. If you require accommodation, please contact the City Clerk’s Office at 866-2117 at least one week in advance of the meeting.

For further information regarding the hearing, please contact Cindy McCormick, Senior Planner, at (408) 871-5103. Comments may be sent to, Wendy Wood, City Clerk.

ORDINANCE NO. 2207

BEING AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CAMPBELL APPROVING A ZONING MAP AMENDMENT (PLN2016-35) TO CHANGE THE ZONING DISTRICT DESIGNATION FROM R-1-6 (SINGLE-FAMILY RESIDENTIAL) TO P-D (PLANNED DEVELOPMENT) FOR THE PROJECT LOCATED AT 1323 PARSONS AVENUE.

After notification and public hearing, as specified by law and after presentation by the Community Development Director, proponents and opponents, the hearing was closed.

The City Council finds as follows with regard to the recommended approval of a Zoning Map Amendment (PLN2016-35):

Environmental Finding

1. An Initial Study has been prepared for the project which provides documentation for the factual basis for concluding that a Mitigated Negative Declaration (PLN2016-37) may be adopted since no substantial evidence exists, in light of the whole record, that the project may have a significant effect on the environment as conditioned.

Evidentiary Findings

2. The proposed project (“project”) includes a Planned Development Permit (PLN2016-34) for the approval of site configuration, architectural design and to create residential lots which do not have frontage on a public street, Tentative Subdivision Map (PLN2016-36) to create four developable single family lots and one commonly owned lot, Zoning Map Amendment (PLN2016-35) to change the zoning from R-1-6 (Single-Family Residential) to P-D (Planned Development), and Parking Modification Permit (PLN2016-222) to allow uncovered parking in lieu of covered.

3. The project site is a 33,263 square-foot property located on the west side of Parsons Avenue, south of Camden Avenue, and north of Sharp Avenue.

4. Single-family residential properties border the site to the south and west and commercial uses border the property to the north and east.

5. The lot is currently developed with one single-family residence that will be demolished as part of the proposed subdivision.

6. Single-family residential properties border the site to the south and west and commercial uses border the property to the north and east.

7. The project site is zoned R-1-6 (Residential Single-Family) as shown on the Campbell Zoning Map and will be rezoned to P-D (Planned Development).

8. The project site is designated Low Density Residential (<6 Units / Gr. Acre) as shown on the Campbell General Plan Map.

9. The proposed residential land use, at a density of approximately 5 units/gr. acre, is consistent with the allowable land use and maximum density permitted by the Low Density Residential (< 6 units per gross acre) General Plan land use designation.

10. The proposed Tentative Subdivision Map may be approved concurrently, and subject to a Planned Development Permit, and Zoning Map Amendment.

11. The project would be consistent with the following General Plan policies and strategies:

Policy LUT-3.1: Variety of Residential Densities: Provide land use categories for and maintenance of a variety of residential densities to offer existing and future residents of all income levels, age groups and special needs sufficient opportunities and choices for locating in Campbell.

Strategy LUT-5.2a: Neighborhood Compatibility: Promote new residential development and substantial additions that are designed to maintain and support the existing character and development pattern of the surrounding neighborhood, especially in historic neighborhoods and neighborhoods with consistent design characteristics.

Strategy LUT-9.3e: Building Materials: Encourage the use of long-lasting, high quality building materials on all buildings to ensure the long-term quality of the built environment.

Strategy LUT-17.1b:Landscaping: Ensure that new developments provide new tree plantings, shrubs, greenery and other landscaping materials, and preserve existing trees and shrubs.

12. The project proposes 13 parking spaces (8 covered, 5 uncovered), where 12 parking spaces (10 covered, 2 uncovered) are required which is allowed with the approval of the associated Parking Modification Permit (PLN2016-68).

13. A draft Mitigation Monitoring and Reporting Program has been provided demonstrating the responsible party and phase of the project that each Mitigation Measure shall be carried out.

14. There are no responsible agencies or trustee agencies responsible for resources affected by the project.

15. On the basis of the Initial Study, and as supported by substantial evidence, the project will not have a significant effect on the environment due to the application of uniformly applicable development policies, and incorporation of project-specific mitigation measures agreed to by the project proponent, as specified by the draft Mitigated Negative Declaration.

16. The City of Campbell provided a Notice of Intent to adopt a Mitigated Negative Declaration to the public via the Campbell Express, the County Clerk, and on the City website.

17. The City of Campbell provided a 20-day public review period of the Mitigated Negative Declaration pursuant to the California Environmental Quality Act Guidelines. The 20-day public review period was from August 3, 2016 to August 23, 2016.

18. The mitigation measures identified in the Mitigated Negative Declaration are included as Conditions of Approval of the Planned Development Permit and/or Tentative Subdivision Map.

Based upon the foregoing findings of fact, the City Council further finds and concludes that:

19. The proposed amendment is consistent with the goals, policies, and actions of the General Plan.

20. The proposed amendment would not be detrimental to the public interest, health, safety, convenience, or general welfare of the city.

21. The proposed amendment is internally consistent with other applicable provisions of this Zoning Code.

22. The parcel is physically suitable (including absence of physical constraints, access, compatibility with adjoining land uses, and provision of utilities) for the requested zoning designation(s) and anticipated land uses/project.

After due consideration of all evidence presented, the City Council of the City of Campbell does ordain as follows:

SECTION ONE: That this Ordinance be adopted to approve a Zoning Map Amendment (PLN2016-35) to amend the Zoning Map designation from R-1-6 (Residential Single-Family) to P-D (Planned Development) for property located at 1323 Parsons Avenue, as depicted by Exhibit A.

SECTION TWO: This Ordinance shall become effective thirty (30) days following its passage and adoption and shall be published, one time within fifteen (15) days upon passage and adoption in the Campbell Express, a newspaper of general circulation in the City of Campbell, County of Santa Clara.

PASSED AND ADOPTED this 20th day of September, 2016, by the following roll call vote:

LIFE…on the roadby Matthew C. Howe

SANTANA “Shaman” TourOctober 2, 2002Cricket Pavilion Phoenix, AZ...Continued from last week

When we were beginning to break down the show that night, I heard a siren warning in the distance. I remember wondering what it was at first, figuring it was some sort of test, but continued packing the gear up. I thought it was an odd time to be blaring such a loud siren since there is always a strict sound curfew after 11pm at all outdoor venues that are near any type of housing. It sounded similar to the air-raid siren that was sometimes heard from Mt. Umunhum (above Los Gatos) when we were kids. The siren continued for several minutes when we got word about it over our walkie-talkie radios. The voice on the radio was our stage manager. “There is a dust and sandstorm heading this way shortly and we need to speed up the load-out and try and finish before it hits us.” he said sternly. “A sandstorm?” I spoke outloud to myself, looking down at my radio in front of me as if it were going to answer back. I have always been fascinated by weather phenomenon and had never been in a dirt or sandstorm before, and at first was actually kind of excited about it.

My clothes were uncomfortably wet with sweat after the concert, and I needed to get out of the ‘show blacks’ I was wearing and I quickly ran to the tour bus to change. (we are required to wear all black clothes during the show, especially if you are on or near the stage) As per usual, the buses were parked out in the back of the venue and from where I was located, was a bit of a hike to get to them. Sometimes the multitude of buses look very similar in the dark with only a slight color or stripe being the only distinctive difference. I hunted the bus down in the middle of the tight grouping and entered the electronic key code outside the locked door. My long hair was blowing across my face and caused me to enter the five digit code incorrectly the first couple of times. Frustrated, I turned my head to clear my hair from my eyes. I entered the code again and heard the door lock click open. I looked off in the distance as I stepped up the steps of the bus. I froze for a moment in disbelief at what I saw. It was ominous. I wasn’t at first sure I was really seeing what I thought I was seeing, and had to wipe my tired eyes to make sure. Like the scene out of an African desert movie, a gloomy brown wall of dirt and sand was clearly bearing down on us. I had never seen anything even remotely similar to such an event. I could see it’s reddish hue everytime the lightning would light up the sky. “Lightning?...in a sandstorm?” I was puzzled and realized I knew nothing about this type of storm. Staring at it only conjured up thoughts of hell coming straight for you - with no angels anywhere around to save you.

The encroaching and billowing dust cloud looked like smoke from a raging wildfire. It was downright frightening. Oddly enough, looking to the south, I saw a clear and beautiful star-filled sky. I quickly ran back to the front of the stage to begin taking down the large video screens that were now flapping in the wind like giant sails. We needed to get them down, and fast. The wind gusts were getting stronger with every passing moment and after seeing what I saw minutes ago back at the bus, I wasn’t so excited about this new weather experience anymore. Continued next week...

CC like the Lincoln High Music Department, we come back to the

same school year [after] year,” said show producer Andy Nagle.

Joseline Becerril, 15, has been playing the violin for six years. She is a member of the Lincoln High Chamber Orchestra. “The violin makes me think about music in different ways and exposes me to other types of music which are new to me,” she said. Becerril plays on Lincoln’s Badminton team and plans to attend college and study Chemistry. She has been a Beatles fan since she first listened to her mother’s “Help!” CD at the age of seven. “I thought the music was pretty catchy,” she said.

When Luna Oppus was five years old, she decided she wanted to learn to play the violin after going to a concert in Washington, D.C. “I fell in love with string instruments and my mother immediately enrolled me in violin lessons,” said the sixteen year old. Oppus plays with the Lincoln Chamber Orchestra and Strings Orchestra and has received excellent and superior ratings at solo and ensemble competitions. “I enjoy hearing the harmonies while playing with the orchestra,” she said. “And I like how supportive the people in orchestra are.” Oppus’ father is a Foreign Service Officer with the State Department and she has lived in Vietnam, the Philippines, Mexico and India. She hopes to play for Lincoln High’s Soccer team this year and join the school’s Hip Hop Club. The junior plans to attend a four year university and pursue a major in the visual arts. She is a Beatles fan and her favorite Fab Four tune is “Here Comes the Sun.”

Kalea Kaui, 15, has been playing the viola since the third grade. In addition to playing with LHS’s Chamber Orchestra and String Orchestra, she performed with the State All-Honor Orchestra last year. “I like

the lower tone of the viola,” she said. Kaui plays softball with the LHS team and the Lady Wolfpack Softball Club and is a member of Key Club. The sophomore is a Beatles fan and her favorite song is “Twist and Shout.”

Jana Madrid, 16, has been a cellist for eight years and performs with the Lincoln Chamber Orchestra. “I enjoy playing the bass line of the orchestra,” said Madrid. The junior plans to attend college and study International Relations and Diplomacy. Madrid is a Beatles fan and her favorite song is “Come Together.”

“In My Life” is the musical retelling of the Beatles story through the eyes of manager Brian Epstein and featuring the live music of renowned tribute band Abbey Road. The band features Chris Paul Overall (“Paul”), Nathaniel Bott (“John”), Zak Schaffer (“George”) and Axel Clarke (“Ringo”). Brian Epstein is played by Murphy Martin. The production includes multimedia, period costumes and vintage instruments. It has toured for years, with a critic for the Orange County Register at one point declaring, “If you see one tribute show, see this one --smart and loads of fun.” The show is widely considered by industry insiders to be the most unique Beatles show in decades. The production played to a capacity audience at the Heritage Theatre in 2014.

“In My Life” returns to the Campbell Heritage Theatre on Tuesday, October 18 at 7:30 pm. This show sold out the Heritage Theatre in 2014. Tickets are $35 - $45 and may be purchased online at www.heritagetheatre.org, by phone at (408) 866-2700, or in person at the box office. The Heritage Theatre is located at Campbell Community Center at 1 W. Campbell Avenue, Campbell 95008. There is ample free parking. The show is appropriate for all ages.

While the bar’s non-oper-ation was not doubted by either side during the public hearing, the date of which non-operation occurred was debated. Rose pre-sented evidence to suggest the bar had been closed from late February to early September, sur-passing the allotted 180 days for which non-operation is accepted by city guidelines.

Evidence to show current operators of the Cardiff had made efforts to continue operation while the supposed closure was presented. The applicant and cur-rent operator Sam Ramirez said, due to miscommunication from the previous co-operator, opening of the bar was delayed. He hoped the Commission would take that information into consideration. Ramirez continued that Cardiff operation under a Conditional Use Permit would prove disad-vantageous to its current target audience.

Some members of the Com-mission agreed that if motioned in favor of discontinued operation for 180 days or more, it would be an opportunity to bring an exist-ing non-conformance business into compliance with city guide-lines.

Despite efforts from Ramirez and one of the Cardiff’s inves-tors, Vice Chair Yvonne Kendall motioned that, based on evidence presented in the hearing, the Cardiff had discontinued opera-tion for more than 180 days and therefore lost its rights to operate. Commissioner Joelle Hernandez seconded the motion in what re-sulted in a near landslide vote in favor of the motion. Commis-sioner Phil Reynolds opposed the motion. Unless a written appeal is submitted to the City Clerk with 10 calendar days, Cardiff opera-tion on the property will cease.

Tabard Theatre Company has a big hit on their hands. Everything about this production is complete. This show runs through October 16 and you need to get a ticket now before they are all gone.

The credit goes to the staff led by Cathy Cassetta, producer, and Jay Manley, director, Dottie Lester White, choreographer, and Kathy Snider, musical director, as well as all the other people who helped mount this production.

The cast, headed by Brendan Quirk as Huey and Janelle La Salle, although older than what the script calls for, have it all. They dance, act and sing, and are committed to their roles. You don’t feel that they are acting but living their part. They make you laugh and cry both in the same performance. Both are veterans to the regional theater although new to Tabard. Let’s hope they come back soon.

They are also supported by an outstanding cast including The T as Delray, Mike Hugill as Mr. Simmons, Brendan Quick as Bobby, and Tarif Pappu as Gator. All the roles are well represented.

I have to give a special shout

Memphis review by C. Michael Traw

out to Ruth E. Stein as Gladys “Mama” Calhoun who brings just the right touch and stops the show in her second act number, “Change Don’t Come Easy.”

I understood all the lyrics and all of the dialogue which I so appreciated with a show that it is all so important. Never once did the small orchestra overpower the performer. Thank you.

And I had no doubt when this show took place. Thanks to costume designer Melissa Sanchez. It is the 50’s and all the costumes were from that period. Even the baggy suits were right. I can remember my dad wearing those.

Also I want to mention the ensemble work. They are exceptional as they have to both dance and sing. One of the young men especially stood out with his high energy lever, and that was Christopher Denson. He was dancing within an inch of his life.

Appreciation was shown from the audience with the deserved standing ovation, which I am sure will be a nightly event. The ticket number to call is 408-479-0231 or buy on line www.tabardtheatre.org.

Who Sir, I Sir? and This is a What? Group Games.

Who Sir, I Sir?

The more players the more fun it is. Players repeat the following lines and must pay close attention. First person starts by saying the following verses in a steady and continuous rhythm, and then accuses another player, who then says the verses and accuses someone else, etc. The game is even more fun when players exaggerate expressions and gestures.

Accuser calls out a player's name to start the game. For example, Bill.

Bill: Who Sir, I Sir? Accuser: Yes Sir, you Sir.

Bill: No Sir, not I Sir. Accuser: Who then, Sir?

Bill: (Bill calls out someone else's name, like Tom)

Tom: Who Sir, I Sir? Etc. This continues until a mistake is made or the steady rhythm and beat is interrupted. Player making the mistake is out of the game. To make it more difficult, have players assume new names they must remember, or numbers according to where they are sitting. If using seat numbers, when a player misses he changes his seat to the last number. Players try to work up to and stay #1. This is a What?

This game is played by two or more players standing facing each other or in a circle. Each player holds a different, small object in his or her right hand. Everyone will be talking and moving in unison saying the same words except using the name of the object they are holding. Everyone turns his or her head and talks to the person on his or her right, then turns and talks to the person on his or her left. The objects are passed to the person on the right at the appropriate time. Here is how it goes. Look toward the person on your right and hold your object up and say, This is a (then name the object). Then, look at the player on your left and ask, A what? (That player in the meantime has announced the object he or she is holding.) Look back again at the player on your right and say, A (then name the object you are holding). Turn again to the player on the left and ask, A what? Turn again to the player on right and say, A (name the object you are holding). Turn again to the player on the left and actually receive the article he or she was holding, and say Oh, a (name the object you have just received). Using the new object, players start again announcing the object they have and trying to hear what the object is that the player on the left is saying. Objects are passed around the circle in this manner and in rhythm. Gradually see how much speed you can build up.
