HOPE AND CHARITY By Ps Daniel Lee

As I reflected on the celebration of our country’s 50th birthday, I realised that much has been said about the remarkable development and prosperity of our nation. One particular phrase given by Prime Minister Lee during his National Day message is ‘leaving no one behind.’ This prompted me to ponder on how Christians living in this land of prosperity could play a pivotal role in upholding as well as fulfilling this mission of ‘leaving no one behind.’

God’s compassion to the poor and needy is very well expressed in Psalm 68:5-6a in proclaiming that ‘He is a father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, who sets the lonely in families, and leads forth the prisoners with singing.’ Indeed, our merciful and gracious God has done His utmost in leaving no one behind to the extent of sending His only begotten Son to die for our sins.

“Although Christians number among the well-to-do in our nation, they are generally concerned for the less privileged in society,” as highlighted by the principal of Trinity Theological College, Rev Dr Ngoei Foong Nghian, in the book ‘Engaging Society’ Chapter 8, on ‘Let hope and charity flourish in this land.’ He further commented that “though Christianity in Singapore is a minority faith, it punches above its weight when it comes to engaging society and contributing to nation building as well as actively seeking ways to assist the poor and the needy by establishing family service centres, community hospitals, half-way houses, and the like.” But he also admonished Christians not to fall into “the tendency towards a faith that is individualistic and disengaged from societal needs.” In this regard, our Pastor Emeritus, Dr William Wan, strongly encouraged us in last Sunday’s sermon that our faith needs to grow to a deeper level of ethical righteousness as indicated in Micah 6:8, “to promote justice, to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

Christians are commanded to help one another but we are also called to help those who are less fortunate than we are. The Old Testament pattern of gleaning is a model of how to help the poor in the most positive way when the Lord said to Moses, “When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Do not go over your vineyard a second time or pick up the grapes that have fallen. Leave them for the poor and the foreigner. I am the Lord your God.” (Lev. 19:9-10)

In our modern society, we too can help the less fortunate in many ways. I am very grateful that our church adopted the Angel Tree Hamper project this year as an avenue to bring hope and transformation to those behind bars and also to help reconcile relationships with their loved ones.

Oftentimes, a little gesture of love towards the needy and the brokenhearted will rekindle the spark of hope in the lives of the least privileged.

One final thought, when the early church began to establish itself, one encouraging attribute that defined the Christian faith was to make sure that the needs of the people were well taken care of. Let us ponder from the following words of Jack Wellman, “Feeding the poor does not define the Christian; it is part of being a Christian.”
