MOTIVATION FOR ESTABLISHING THE CENTRE University of Port Harcourt is among 18 other African Universities that won the World Bank grant to establish African Centre of Excellence. Locally, sourced cost-effective OILFIELD CHEMICALS are required for drilling, well completion, and achieving optimum oil recovery. Currently, several billions of dollars are spent, annually, importing these chemicals in the Gulf of Guinea for petroleum exploitation. Yet, numerous natural resources can be, successfully, processed and used for these operations. Nigeria and other African countries have abundant supplies of these resources. Developing technologies for in-country production of oilfield chemicals will improve profit margin, build human capacity and create jobs. 3
