By Paul Gibson University of Louisville BCM 2013 Slide 2 Watching the Whole Movie Slide 3 In the beginning 1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. 3 And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light.~ Genesis 1:1-3 Slide 4 In the beginning SonHoly SpiritFather Slide 5 In the beginning 19 Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found. 21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and closed up the place with flesh. Slide 6 In the beginning 22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. 23 The man said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman,' for she was taken out of man." 24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. 25 The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame. ~ Genesis 2:19-25 Slide 7 In the beginning GodEveAdam *Represents perfect community, not equality Slide 8 In the beginning 28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. ~Genesis 3:6-7 Slide 12 WHATS THE BIG DEAL? First sin=eating of the apple Slide 13 Whats the big deal? 8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the LORD God called to the man, "Where are you?" 10 He answered, "I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid. ~Genesis 3:8-10 Slide 14 Whats the big deal? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?" 12 The man said, "The woman you put here with me--she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it. 16 To the woman he said, "I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you." Genesis 3:11-12; 16 (NIV) Slide 17 Whats the big deal? Perfect harmony with creation was lost Slide 22 What is sin? 6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Genesis 3:6 (NIV) Sin is disobedience caused by a turning away from God which results in an over-turning (over- dependence upon) towards oneself and one another. Slide 23 Over-Turning in real life Over-Turning Towards One Another 1. Co-dependent 2. Enmeshed (results in loss of reflection) Over-Turning Towards Oneself 3. Aloneness (results in shame) Slide 24 Turning back towards God 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. Psalm 51:17 (NIV) Repentance- Metenao-a turning back resulting in realizing and admitting our sinfulness Slide 25 WHATS THE BIG DEAL? Recognizing and admitting our sinfulness is our first step back towards God Slide 26 Strength in Brokenness True strength does not come out of bravado. Until we are broken, our life will be self-centered, self-reliant; our strength will be our own. So long as you think you are really something in and of yourself, what will you need God for? I dont trust a man who hasnt suffered; I dont let a man get close to me who hasnt faced his wound. Think of the posers you knoware they the kind of man you would call at 2:00 A.M., when life is collapsing around you? Not me. I dont want clichs; I want deep, soulful truth, and that only comes when a man has walked the road Ive been talking about. ~Wild at Heart
