Hello nEbOians!Welcome to the third issue of orange!

In this issue of Jobs on Board, we are going to explore temporary job opportunities –

holiday jobs, internships and freelancing/part-time jobs. If you are interested to get a job

during the December holidays, it’ll be great to start thinking about it now!

Work your way through a variety of fi elds! Perhaps our interview with socio-political blogger

and founder of her own non-profi t organisation Jeraldine Phneah (page 8) will open your

mind to a possible job in the media industry, or pique your interest in current affairs and

politics and help you gather some insight on how to develop or discover your passion.

Who says jobs have to be mundane and tiresome? The editors’ refl ections on our job

experiences will expose you to the insights of working life and the variations of job

scopes. The fun facts on page 14 will give you something to think about before you

embark on your job experience.

nEbO is also celebrating “Thank Your Intern Day!”, a brand new initiative for the

sometimes-neglected youth at the workplace. We may be inexperienced but we can

defi nitely contribute! So hurry and hop on an internship to enjoy the cruise with us.

I am a student in my fi nal year of SIM, but going to work has

never been anything out of the ordinary for me. In fact, I have

been working every vacation since my secondary school days –

from selling ice cream to being a teacher in a childcare centre. I

was even a chiropractic assistant once! Every job poses its own

challenges, but these challenges also provide me with different

learning experiences.

Thanks to the fl exibility of my timetable as an undergraduate, I

have recently started working part-time at a Japanese electronics

company within the vicinity of my home. While the role of an

administrative assistant can be rather mundane and boring,

being in the corporate communications department brighten up

things a little. My job scope allows me to interact with the fi nance

department, where I process payments from suppliers and issue

invoices to customers, which is slightly related to what I am

currently studying. Also, as our department consists of the public

relations, web and ad team, I get to be involved in the preparation

of various on-going projects as well.

I believe that starting work young gives us more opportunities to

understand and experience the different industries. In addition,

interpersonal skills which are essential and necessary at work can

be nurtured over time. Through part-time jobs/internships, we can

learn to adapt to the working environment and communicate with

people of different working styles. Who knows, we might just be

more certain of what we want or not want when we offi cially step

into the work force. It is all about spending our time meaningfully

and taking the extra step!

I am doing an internship at the Translation Department of a

government agency. Though not my fi rst internship, this is my

longest and most enjoyable one. I have spent 2 and a half

months at my workplace. While people often perceive interns to

be doing menial or unimportant tasks, I have contributed a lot to

their daily work output.

All interns have expectations that are hardly met. Before I joined the

department, I had a brief understanding of translation being an art

that requires multi-disciplinary knowledge. Through this internship, I

take with me the knowledge that above all critical thinking skills and

clarity of thought, sensitivity to the nuances in the texts is absolutely

necessary. I got to work with some really professional translators

who are not only good in their job but wonderful teachers as well,

further deepening my respect for them. The internship not only met

my expectations, but surpassed them.

Not all companies will give you the suffi cient exposure desired

but I really do believe that how much you learn depends on

how much initiative you take. If you show them your passion

and eagerness to learn, they will have the patience to assign

you more important tasks, go through your mistakes with you

making your internship worthwhile and fruitful. I once heard

Alex Yam, Member of Parliament at Yew Tee, say during a nEbO

event that passion is more developed than discovered. Though

my passion was discovered before my internship, it defi nitely

developed during this period.

I learnt so much that I could never have learnt in school. This is

why internships are important, and what a good internship can

do for you.

Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2and more Blockbuster Movies!

This summer vacation, Jeraldine has decided to take on a different

role – contestant and fi nalist of the Miss Singapore World 2013. When

asked about her aim and objective of participating in the pageant,

Jeraldine explained, ‘’I’m only young once, and I think it’s a test of my

resilience and ability to take criticisms. Also, I took part to make new

connections and learn new things, such as ways to present myself

in front of the camera and how I should carry myself when I walk.

I’m trying to pick up as many new skills as I can as all these can be

applied to other aspects of my life.’’ Besides her own development

and achievement, she also hopes to gain more attention through the

contest and raise awareness for Creatives for Causes.

Her last words for all readers, ‘’Do not just wait for opportunities to

come by, but go grab them!’’

At the age of 22, Jeraldine Phneah, a NTU

Wee Kim Wee School of Communication

and Information student, is already well-

versed with the working world – having

done internships at the Prime Minister’s

Offi ce, Ministry of Home Affairs, Bates Asia

and even her recent stint at Sing Tao News

Corporation in Hong Kong.

‘’As a young person, your studies should

be the fi rst priority,’’ Jeraldine said. But that

certainly doesn’t mean that youth can’t

engage in other meaningful activities such

as taking up internships during the holidays.

The key advice that Jeraldine has for youth

is to actively take on internship opportunities

with different job scopes so that there is

always something new to learn.

While Jeraldine has enjoyed all her

internships, her best experience has been

at Sing Tao News Corporation in Hong

Kong where she was a local correspondent

assigned important duties and treated

like one of the permanent staffs. Though

the internship opportunity was highly

competitive, Jeraldine managed to clinch

it with her proactiveness and enthusiasm.

She shared, ‘’When facing competition, you

need to think out of the box. I set up my own

website to showcase my past portfolios and

sent it (the website address) to my employer.

I think that is how I got the leverage over

others who merely sent their CV and went

through the school system. To get more

opportunities, you need to do more!’’

While in Hong Kong, Jeraldine faced new

challenges such as the language barrier

and locals shunning away from media

attention. Nonetheless, she managed to

do investigative journalism amongst her

daily work. She also braved a thunderstorm

to cover a protest in remembrance of the

Tiananmen Incident – a protest which is

a display of the Hong Kong spirit and the

citizens’ passion. Inspired by the Hong

Kong citizens’ strong civil activist culture,

Jeraldine started to take an interest in

current affairs. She then made a shift

from her previous blogging platform on

MyFatPocket to blogging independently

and contributing articles to The Online

Citizen. As Singaporean youth are criticised

to be apathetic, Jeraldine hopes to provide

constructive criticisms on policies and

encourage other youth to step forward to

make a positive change. She also has plans

to pursue a Masters Degree, majoring in

Public Policy.

Inspired by Tony Gaskin’s famous quote “If

you don’t build your dreams, someone will hire

you to help build theirs’’, Jeraldine founded

Creatives for Causes (CFC) after the idea

struck her while she was travelling in Europe.

CFC, which turned 1 in July 2013, provides

pro-bono professional communication

services through its network of youth

volunteers. This is also in line with Jeraldine’s

strengths and interests in design and event

planning. So far, CFC has benefi tted many

charity organisations including Blessings in a

Bag, SPCA and Willing Hearts.

Care CommunityGive a Helping Hand“Helping others” – this has been the value

carved into our minds ever since we were

able to comprehend those words. In this

fast-moving world, the question many would

ask is how they can help others, especially

on a regular basis. For me, the answer was

clear – Volunteerism. However, I had no

idea where to start or what the platforms

for Volunteerism were until I discovered the

nEbO family.

In 2010, my cousin who was in nEbO’s

Care community, fi rst introduced me to

nEbO and I participated in my fi rst ever

Care event, nEbO‘s W.I.S.H. My role

was to help wrap and distribute gifts

to underprivileged children during the

Christmas season. Additionally, I also

helped decorate the centre and pack their

library, which I felt was really meaningful

and was what motivated me to participate

in more Care events. Through nEbO’s

W.I.S.H., I also made many new friends

who, like me, are interested in doing more

for the community.

Over the years, I have visited homes, packed

libraries, and learnt to interact comfortably

with children. One of my most memorable

events has been The Marina Barrage

Experience which I recently participated in.

We brought a group of children out for a

day at the Marina Barrage, participating in

guided tours and games. Despite being a

long and tiring day, I knew that it was all

worth the effort when I saw the children’s

smiling faces after the event.

My time with nEbO has definitely been an

enriching, rewarding and memorable one,

where I get to meet people from all walks

of life. nEbO has helped me gain many

experiences and opportunities to help

others and to bring me closer to the less

fortunate in Singapore. This is something

I would have had difficulty achieving on

my own.

We wish you all the best towards your next step into the workforce and hope these tips will guide you along the way!

*Dependent on the contractual clauses stated within the contract of employment between the employer and intern

FIVE Things You Should Know

That is the maximum number

of hours you are allowed to

work a week*. Anything extra

is considered overtime (OT).

OT differs per company, but

according to MOM’s Employment

Act, “the rate for overtime work

should be no less than one and

a half times his hourly basic rate

of pay.”*

44 is the Magic Number1)

Being responsible is one of

the key things you learn during

your internship. If you have

to terminate your contract of

service, ensure that you have

the following (26 weeks is 5.5

months):

• One day’s notice if he has

been so employed for less

than 26 weeks

• One week’s notice if he has

been so employed for 26 weeks

or more but less than 2 years*

Termination of Contract5)

If you disappear from work for 2

days without a valid reason (like

MC), without obtaining approval

or informing beforehand, your

contract with the company is

considered to be broken. So

remember to go to the doctor

and get an MC if you’re sick!

Missing-in-Action2)

You are entitled to at least one off

day per week!*

Rest Days3)

There is no minimum wage law

in Singapore but don’t get taken

advantage of either! Ensure the

contract between you and the

company is satisfactory to you.

Don’t go overboard as well since

you are just starting out. If you

are about to do an internship,

remind yourself of the priceless

opportunities that you will gain!

Wages4)

Are you ready to step into the workforce?

You’ve packed your bag, ironed your outfi t and planned the route to your fi rst day of work. But are you really

prepared to take your fi rst step into the workforce? We’ve trawled through the Employment Act in Singapore (really

heavy reading but just for you, we braved through the document!) and this is what we feel you need to know:

Thank Your Intern Dayby Kayleen Ang

Tell your bosses that Ten Ten (October 10)

is “Thank Your Intern Day!” :)

Internship is a period of time in your life

when you’re attached to one company and

gain valuable working experience. You learn

things from the ground-up, and this will help

you when you enter the industry.

You do coffee runs, take notes at meetings

and assist with their workload. Our million-

dollar question is: Are interns treated the

same way as full-time staff?

• To raise social awareness that interns are

employers’ potential future employees

• To educate the interns of their “Workplace

Rights”

• To manage expectations on both ends

This social movement was initiated by 15

like-minded youth who have undergone

internships and want to ensure that the right

measures are in place to protect interns

from unfair workplace treatments and to

raise the awareness of interns’ employment

protection rights.

Appreciating interns can be as simple as

treating them to lunch or writing a thank-

you card. What’s important is that each

company makes the effort to thank their

interns for being with them and contributing

to the organisations.

Ten Ten is “Thank Your Intern Day”. Share

There is no form of intern appreciation in
