The "Field Calibration of Irrigatio,t dutlets" training was organized by International Irrigation Management Institute Pakistan in the month of October. The purpose of this training was basically to polish the talent of Pakistani Professionals and Government staff. So that, when they will return to their parent department, they will be able to utilize their country's resources in a better way. The future of any project depends upon the basis on which the project was designed. So we can say that field data collection is having a pivotal role for the success of the projects and future planning. So, we can say that the selection of the subject for the training was best.

Although during this training course we had an opportunity to work with people from different agencies, but what we feel is that the number of participants were more than manageable. So, some participants some time faced the difficulty of transportation and groups were large. The overall training setup and lectures were very useful and we can use this informative training in the field quite often.

It is our proud that Pakistan is enjoying the largest irrigation system in the world. Especially Punjab is irrigating the land more than 23 million acres. The God gifted water resources require to be used and sustained properly. But sorry to say at present we are unable to save this water, and the losses of water reported by various agencies are more than fifty percent. Obviously this loss of water is at alarming stage.

With this in mind, IlMl seeks to do research and provide training on improving management of the irrigation system. For the betterment of the irrigation system, awareness of the prevailing problems and basic knowledge is essential for the concerned persons. IlMl already has conducted training courses for trainees from water related agencies and research staff. Similarly, this training program on the calibration of outlet structures was conducted, in which we learned how to apply methods like current metering and cutthroat fluming for discharge measuring in water courses.

This training offered us a unique opportunity to actually bring theory in practice and gain field experience in the calibration of outlets. In future these techniques will be used by trainees in their practical work. The following few suggestions are being submitted:

All the .SDO/Sub-Engineers must be trained turn by turn for better operation of the system.

IlMl should carry out such training programs at Lahore, so that even more people can participate.

Irrigation and Power Department itself should conduct the program for calibration of its hydraulic structures and should provide the instruments to the SDO/Sub-Engineers to do these calibrations at the very site.

This training is helpful for everyone who is involved with irrigation water management, as basic knowledge, as tool for planning, managing or implementing field activities.

In the end we would like to express our gratitude to IlMl staff for the efforts they have put in organizing this training. With such a big group it was certainly not easy to plan all the activities, especially in the field. Except for some minor inaccuracies in the planning of group formation or transport arrangements (mainly due to our dependency upon the water supply) everything went very smoothly.

At last we would pay lot of thanks to Prof Skogerboe and his team for conducting such successful and useful training courses. It is also expected that training like these will be organized in future. Thanks.
