Improving business conditions gave many of our Top 200 electrical distributors some good reasons to cheer.
THE TOP 200By Jim Lucy, Chief Editor, and Doug Chandler, Executive Editor
Electrical Wholesaling’s annual Top 200 listing always offers one of the best reality checks of what’s really happening
in the electrical market. Each year, senior executives from more than 100 of the industry’s largest distribu-tors offer invaluable insight into what’s happening with the business and the electrical industry.
As one might expect, 2012 has been a bit of a mixed bag for them. On the bright side, 53 of the 116 executives (46%) who offered sales forecasts in the survey responses Top 200 electrical distributors expect sales increases of at least 10%. However, 40 respondents (34%) expect their year to be flat and at best offer 5% growth. Some of the electrical distributors expecting sluggish sales pointed to the poor residential construction market and a scarcity of new commercial jobs. Still, the general tone of the Top 200 respondents was decidedly optimistic. Even if some of their core markets were growing slowly, at least they were moving in the right direc-tion, unlike during the dark years of 2008-2009. Considering how slow the all-important commercial market was for many local markets in 2011, it’s surprising that so many electrical distributors enjoyed decent growth
last year in the 5%–8% range.Langdon Scott, the vice president
and general manager of Peninsular Electrical Distributors, West Palm Beach, Fla., is expecting 5% growth for his company. Scott says commer-cial construction in his marketplace is mostly treading water but that, “Residential construction, surpris-ingly is growing.”
Tammy Miller, CEO, Border States Electric, Fargo, N.D., believes sales will increase 10% in 2012, led by robust growth in the industrial mar-ket and slow, steady growth in the construction market. She says Bor-der States is also currently enjoying expanded products sales to existing customers and strong oil patch and utility sales.
Several other distributors men-tioned the oil and gas segment as one of their stronger customer segments. Bill Elliott, president, Elliott Electric Supply, Nacogdoches, Texas, expects this niche to help fuel a 20%-sales increase. He also acquired Key Elec-trical Supply, Houston, and several branches of Treadway Electric Co., Inc., Little Rock, Ark. Rick Teab-erry says Winkle Electric Co. Inc., Youngstown, Ohio, has benefitted from a major capital project in its northeastern Ohio market area — a greenfield pipe manufacturing plant
that will support the Marcellus Shale Gas find in western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio. Teaberry, the com-pany’s president, sees a 15% increase in 2012 sales due to this project, other oil and gas projects, and an increase in market share from exist-ing customers.
The industrial market has also been strong for Graybar Electric Co., St. Louis, says Kenton Soren-son, senior accountant, while the residential contractor market has lagged behind. “Growth in indus-trial production helped push plant capacity utilization rates and capital expenditures on business equipment to their highest levels in three years,” he said. “Non-residential construc-tion grew moderately during 2011, driven by investment in the energy sector.”
Graybar was one of the Top 200 distributors that launched new branches in 2011, with new loca-tions in California, Indiana, Missouri, Minnesota and New York. This year, the company also opened the doors of new branches in North Charleston, S.C.; Joplin, Mo.; and Lincoln, Neb. To service its utility customers, TEC Utility Supply & Service, George-town, Texas, opened up three new branches inside customers’ existing warehouses, but uses those facilities

toP 25 as ranKED BY salEs-PEr-EMPloYEEAs in the past, specialty distributors, which tend to have fewer customers and employees than full-line electrical distributors, dominate the list of distributors as ranked by sales per employee. The companies here were among those respondents that provided both a 2011 sales number and an employee count for publication in this year’s listing. This average sales-per-employee for all of the 130 companies (both specialists and full-line electrical dis-tributors) that provided data for both 2011 sales and number of employees was $728,976; for full-line electrical distributors the figure was $666,635.

2011-2012 acQUisitions in thE ElEctrical MarKEtOver the past two years, more than 40 distributors of electrical supplies have been acquired. In just four acquistions -- Platt Electric Supply, Independent Electric Supply (San Carlos, Calif.), One Source and Walters Wholesale Electric -- an estimated $1.3 billion in sales changed hands. With at least 15 deals already this year, 2012 figures to be one of the most active acquisition years ever in the electri-cal market.

to service other customers as well. Some distributors saw broad-
based improvement across all key markets. Timothy Berry, president and CEO of Kriz-Davis Co., Grand Island, Neb., expects high-single to low double-digit growth for 2012, and said all of the company’s mar-kets grew last year. “Commercial construction and industrial sales results were our biggest rebound segments, with utility numbers posting continued steady growth patterns,” he said. “Consumer con-fidence remained cautious, but did increase during 2011 in our geogra-phy. Our sales mix is very diversi-fied by design with a healthy mix of utility, construction, and industrial customers.”
With a 20%-increase baked into his 2012 sales forecast, Doug Borch-ers, vice president, Dickman Supply, Sidney, Ohio, was one of nine respon-dents looking for sales to increase more than 20%. His optimism is based in large part on a strong in-dustrial market and a construction market that’s starting to wake up in west-central Ohio. “The industrial automation market is very strong and the construction market just now showing small signs of activity after a couple years of stagnation,” he said. “The strong industrial market

contributed heavily to growth. We’re expecting another 20% increase in 2012 based on activity so far and backlog at our customers.”
While the executive management team at WinWholesale, Dayton, Ohio expects more modest growth this year, Chuck Manker, corporate communica-tions manager, sees growth in work from the federal government, health care, education and multi-family con-struction. He said the company has an “increased focus on customer needs, and an emphasis on business basics — relationships with current customers, acquiring new customers, sensible ex-pense control and managing assets.”
Kriz-Davis’ Berry said a back-to-basics sales approach also worked well for his company in 2011. “Our focus was selling basics and making it easier for the customer to do business with us,” he said. “Through an increase in inventory levels during this time and e-commerce and back-office platform initiatives, the response from our customer base was positive, resulting in our increased sales performance for 2011.”

nEW ProDUcts toP 200 DistriBUtors stocK (nUMBEr oF coMPaniEs)With more than 100 Top 200 electrical distributors already stocking LEDs (other than flashlights or exit signs), solid-state lighting has quickly gained mind share amongst the industry’s largest distributors.
Electrical Wholesaling’s editors also found it interesting that so many Top 200 electrical distributors are already stocking electric-vehicle charging stations and related equipment.
Quincy, Mass., and Rich Cotter, V.P. of finance, Needham Electric Sup-ply Corp. (NESCO), Canton, Mass., both said their government sales were up in the eastern Massachu-setts electrical market. Cotter said lighting retrofits and large project are ran strong in 2011. Interestingly, both executives see 15% growth for 2012.
You will notice some new members of Electrical Wholesaling’s Top 200 distributors this year — several of the largest independent Canadian electrical distributors. Since several of the largest national distributors now provide EW’s editors with their North American sales for this list and don’t break out their U.S. sales, we thought including the largest Ca-nadian distributors would offer a more accurate reflection of the largest distributors on the continent. Any 2011 sales data provided by Canadian distributors was converted into U.S. dollars by using the exchange rate on Dec. 31, 2011.
Methodology. To compile this listing, in April of this year Electri-cal Wholesaling’s editors sent out a survey to several hundred distribu-tors of electrical supplies that have either been on the listing in the
past or have at least $15 million in annual sales according to our data sources. In addition, we get data from publicly held distributors and other companies that make their sales and company data publicly data. This year we got information back from 130 Top 200 distributors, which in itself is remarkable because the vast majority of companies on this listing are privately held. Many of these companies do ask us to use their sales data confidentially and only for placement on the listing. We have been happy to do that since the late 1970s, when this ranking was established by the late Andrea Herbert, Electrical Wholesaling’s chief editor for many years.
You will also notice that we do rank companies that have been ac-quired in either 2011 or 2012. Our general rule of thumb here is that when a company has been acquired, we include their sales (or a sales esti-mate) for that calendar year, but take them off the Top 200 listing the next year, when they are fully integrated into the acquirer.
In those situations where a dis-tributor is large enough to make the listing but did not respond to our surveys, if we have reliable sales or
employee data from the past few years, we will place them on the listing, us-ing a sales-per-employee average, or the average sales increase based on responses from Top 200 respondents or other Electrical Wholesaling sales data. However, if we haven’t heard from you for a while and your com-pany is on this year’s listing, there’s no guarantee that it will be ranked again next year. We make every effort to make this listing as accurate as pos-sible, and can’t rely on sales estimates or other company data that’s more than a few years old.
Strictly by the numbers. With an estimated $58.3 billion in sales, EW estimates the Top 200 distribu-tors controlled more than 60% of the $86.9 billion in 2011 sales through electrical distributors. According to EW estimates, these 200 companies had at 68,924 employees and 5,500 North American branches. From the 130 companies that provided both sales and employee data, Electri-cal Wholesaling’s editors estimated that full-line distributors averaged $666,635in sales-per-employee, and that all Top 200 respondents (in-cluding the product specialists with markedly higher sales-per-employee ratios) average $728,976.

2011 was a big year for acquisi-tions by the North American mar-ket’s largest electrical distribution company. Sonepar, privately held and based in Paris, France, bagged two trophy operations in southern California for its North American subsidiary, with back-to-back ac-quisitions of Independent Electric Supply, San Carlos, Calif., (#18 on last year’s Top 200 list) and One-Source Distributors, Oceanside, Ca-
lif., (#23 last year). With its model of acquiring strong independent regional distributors and keeping their identities and often their man-agement teams intact, Sonepar has a kaleidoscopic look to it, but it’s been an effective model. Through its Irby subsidiary, Sonepar also acquired Treadway Electric (#109 last year), Little Rock, Ark., in December 2011, and in February Sonepar Canada bought the assets of SESCO/QUESCO from HD Supply.

trical distributor in the U.S., WESCO International has a public profile to match the breadth of its operations. In building its current 400 locations in North America fed by eight distri-bution centers, the Pittsburgh giant historically grew by acquisitions, but in recent years has focused on organic growth and smaller, niche-market additions. In March 2011, WESCO acquired RECO, Cincinnati, a Siemens automation, controls and electrical distributor with annual sales of approximately $25 million and six branches in the Midwest and South.
In Canada, WESCO added Brews Supply, based in Calgary, which is not a source for beer or beer ingredi-ents, alas, but instead sells industrial, utility and commercial products generating sales around $50 million in 2010. The acquisition of RS Elec-tronics, Livonia, Mich., announced in December 2011 and consummated in January this year, further added to WESCO’s position in electronics and electrical, especially for the auto, medical and contract manufactur-ing markets.
3. rExElDallas
Parent: Rexel SA, ParisERP system: Moving toward Epicor Eclipse 2011 sales: $6.74 billion; par-ent company’s sales up 6.2% over 2010.
Between the operations under its own name and those of its sub-sidiary Gexpro, the global big dog in electrical distribution has a large and expanding presence in the North American market. Paris, France-based Rexel wasn’t active on the North American acquisition scene in 2011 (though last month’s acquisi-tion of Platt Electric, Beaverton, Ore., along with several large acquisitions in South America and Europe over the past few months, may signal a dif-ferent story in 2012). The company reportedly spent much of the year
integrating past acquisitions and converting to a new enterprise-wide software platform. Among signifi-cant personnel moves, the com-pany named Rudy Provoost, former worldwide head of Philips Lighting, to its management board. Provoost took over the board chairmanship in February this year.
4. GraybarSt. Louis
2011 sales: $5.98 billion; net sales increased 16.4% over 2010.ERP system: SAP
Graybar, one of the largest employee-owned companies in North America, with 240 locations throughout the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico fed by seven regional, or zone, warehouses, continued to strengthen its financial position in
2011. Graybar recapitalized in Oc-tober with a $500 million, five-year unsecured revolving line of credit. It was the largest financing agree-ment in Graybar’s history and the company planned to use much of it to retire debt.
Amid a number of personnel changes, Kathleen Mazzarella was named to the newly created posi-tion of executive vice president and chief operating officer before stepping up to the president’s role to start 2012. Frank Hughes re-tired as head of Graybar Canada after 40 years and Peter Horncastle stepped into that role. In other news at Graybar, the company opened up several new branches and is working with solar firm Ontility to provide PV training for electrical contractors.

During 2011, Graybar Electric Co., St. Louis, opened branches in Hudson Valley, N.Y.; Lafayette, Ind.; Brooklyn, Minn.; Bel Ridge, Mo.; City of Industry, Calif.; and closed locations in Wanamassa, N.J., and Medford, Ore.
While Rexel Holdings USA, Dallas, closed 27 locations in 2011, it added more than 100 locations with its acquisition last month of Platt Electric Supply, Beaverton, Ore.
With all the talk about California being the land of the giants, there’s still room for aggressive inde-pendent distributors. Bob LaRue, president, Alameda Electrical Distributors, Hayward, Calif., is looking for 2012 growth of 12%–16% based in part on his acquisition last year of Central Wholesale Electric Supply of Livermore, Calif., and its locations in Modesto, Salinas, Sand City and Paso Robles, and growth in the health-care, biotech and alternative energy sectors.
Remember the rock anthem lyrics “Cleveland rocks”? Sounds like the Leffs of Leff Electric Co., Brooklyn Heights, Ohio, might be shouting them again this year. Sanford Leff, Jr., executive V.P., and brother Bruce, president, see a 9% to 10% increase in 2012 sales and say energy solutions opportunities are increasing dramatically. They are also seeing growth in commercial construction and their national retail accounts business.
Business looks strong across all markets in upstate New York and northern New England for Horizon Solutions, Rochester, N.Y., although the company’s industrial OEM business is flat after two years of 20% growth. All in all, it’s good enough for a 12% growth forecast. But what really is amazing Jim Newton, president, these days is the growth of solid-state lighting. “The speed at which LEDS are changing the whole lighting world is astonishing,” he says.
Jack Maltby, president, Maltby Electric Supply Co. Inc., San Francisco, said solar construction was big in 2011, but that it’s lagging this year. A growth market in the Bay Area is commercial construction, which he says has picked up significantly in 2012 over 2011.
Across the country, the solar market is also slow-ing in New Jersey, a former hotbed for PV projects. Jeffrey Musoff, CFO, Warshauer Electric Supply Co. Inc., Tinton Falls, N.J., says the Garden State’s solar market continues to decline but that its core con-tractor business segment that accounts for 80% of sales are showing growth. He expects a 10% boost in 2012.
Fromm Electric Supply, Reading, Pa., is seeing an interesting mix of growth markets. Lou Fromm, V.P. of marketing and communications, and Jon Gerhart, V.P. of sales, see renewed growth in consumer retail/national accounts; appliances (residential & com-mercial); and commercial lighting; significant growth in industrial segment; and project wins in the solar markets. With these increases and several branches “hitting their stride,” Fromm and Gerhart expect 12% growth in 2012.
Let’s hear it for some good news from MoTown. Devin Ezop, general manager, Metro Wire & Cable Corp., Sterling Heights, Mich., says the company is seeing growth in the utility market on both the generation and distribution side, as well as indus-trial projects. Ezop also reports that the company is happy with sales from its newly opened sales and distribution center in Iowa City, Iowa, that focuses on the electrical contractor and utility markets, and on sales out of its Atlanta sales and distribution center, which focuses on utility, low-voltage and electrical contractor sectors. It all adds up to a forecast for a 15% sales increase for Metro Wire & Cable.
In the heartland, John Franken, president, Echo Supply Group, Council Bluffs, Iowa, expects a healthy 15% sales increase, based on improving industrial business and a strong farming market. “Commercial and residential are still soft, but are showing positive signs,” he says.
In the utility market, Johnny Andrews, COO, TEC Utility Supply & Service, Georgetown, Texas, says the build-out in advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) systems and the oil, gas and irrigation niches are good markets. Housing developments are flat, but Andrews expects a small residential uptick. He also expects sales for the $120 million distributor to increase 15% in 2012.
While Mike Romme, Stanion Wholesale Electric Co., Pratt., Kan., expects sales to be flat is year, he says there’s been renewed growth in the oil, gas and commercial aircraft industries. The company also acquired J&R Electric, Liberty, Mo.
American Electric Supply Inc., Corona, Calif., closed its San Diego branch because customers preferred delivery from the company’s Corona, Calif., main branch instead of driving to will call in San Diego. Mike Pratt, president, is gunning for a 2012 sales increase of 11% to 14% that will be based in part on the company focusing on increasing market share as that Californian economy slowy comes back.

Anixter is the world’s largest spe-cialty wire and cable distributor, and as an early entrant in the market for low-voltage communication wiring has helped to build that market. 2011 saw it moving further into the auto-mation space by partnering with sys-tem integrators through groups such as the Control System Integrators Association, as well as emphasizing its offerings in the robust data center market and developing capabilities in in-building wireless. The publicly traded distributor was already active in a number of international mar-kets, and in 2011 established a joint venture in Saudi Arabia to serve the Middle Eastern market.

CED started 2011 by moving its headquarters from Westlake Village, Calif., to Irving, Texas, thanks to $1.2 million in incentives from Texas Gov-ernor Rick Perry. The also company made news earlier this year with its acquisition of Walters Wholesale Electric, Signal Hill, Calif.
CED never says anything in the business press about any of the dozens of acquisitions the Coburn family has made over the years. EW’s editors don’t take it person-ally — we regularly get calls from Forbes magazine editors looking for CED sales data because the com-pany is one of the largest family-owned companies and ranks high on Forbes’ lists, too. When EW’s editors get the opportunity to talk off the record with managers or for-mer owners of any of the companies that CED purchased, they seem to be happy with the corporation’s hands-off management style.

2011 sales: $1.23 billion; up ap-proximately 20% from 2010.ERP system: SAPBuying/marketing group: ADThe employee-owned giant from Fargo may not be nationwide, but it has built a strong position in key regional markets of the Midwest, the mountain states, the Southwest and the south central U.S. It has been particularly active lately in grow-ing the renewable energy products market while maintaining its core expertise in factory automation and utility products as well as residen-tial, commercial and MRO electrical markets.
8. W.W. GraiNGErLake Forest, Ill.
Total company sales: $8.1 billion, a 12.5% increase over 2010. Electrical sales account for no less than 15% of total sales.
When Grainger shifted its em-phasis from the legendary big red catalog, with its soup-to-nuts offer-ing of industrial maintenance, repair and operations (MRO) supplies, and bet the house on online commerce, the company’s importance to the industry ratcheted upward several notches. Not only does it now rank in the top 10 in sales of electrical supplies — one among many cat-egories of products it stocks and sells — but its online catalog consis-tently shows the rest of the industry how e-commerce is done. In 2011, Grainger dove deeper into inventory management services and announced an interesting executive development initiative in which its presidents of Grainger U.S. and Grainger Inter-national exchanged roles.

Shortly before being spun-off from Home Depot in 2007, HD Supply Electrical had a goal to be
the largest electrical products dis-tributor in the U.S. market by 2012. Now, with 40 electrical branches throughout the southeast U.S. as well as Texas and Arizona, the company looks more like a super-regional chain with significant depth in the utilities market as well as serving the full range from residential and commercial contractors to industrial facilities’ MRO needs. One utility market insider says HD Supply is by far the largest distributor of utility supplies in North America, based in large part on its 2006 acquisition of Hughes Supply, Orlando.
In 2011, HD Supply sold one of its Canadian divisions, SESCO/QUESCO in the Toronto area, to Sonepar. It also inked a variety of deals with suppliers, partners and service providers to ex-pand its offerings, including an equity investment in Agile Sourcing, a sup-ply integrator for the utility market, and a partnership with N-Dimension Solutions, a software provider for smart-grid security.

With locations stretching from New York to Alaska, Crescent Electric covers much of the U.S., and cov-ers most of the electrical industry in terms of markets served — from residential and commercial construc-tion to industrial MRO to utilities to agriculture, healthcare and datacom. The company has recently become an Energy Star partner and devel-oped a program focused on improv-ing its own sustainability practices, which included being one of the first electrical distributors to install an electric-vehicle charging station for customers, at its Rockdale, Ill., branch in September 2011.
Crescent also made news during the past year by joining IMARK and

has continued to grow to 50 loca-tions. In 2011 Charles Collat Jr. was promoted to executive V.P. and COO. The company is a long-time sup-porter of one of the nation’s best in-dustrial distribution programs at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, right in its backyard.
