A Judge once asked me in his deep, aged voice, “If all the legal authority to support your motion were kept in my chamber, what would be the most important thing to have?” My answer, of course, would be the key to his chamber.

I think of membership in the Stanislaus County Bar Association (SCBA) as that kind of key since it unlocks numerous professional and local charitable opportunities. We already hit the ground running when Judge Silveira and Judge Sandhu presented a required MCLE on elimination of bias. That was shortly followed by another required MCLE on ethics presented by Judge McFadden. On March 20th, there is a free lawyers’ reception for bar members in which Judge Speiller will recognize the newly admitted attorneys to our county. Last but not least, California Supreme Court Chief Justice, Tani Cantil-Sakauye, just confirmed that she will be our keynote speaker for Law Day on Tuesday, June 11th, at The Gallo Center for the Arts.

In addition to learning from local judges before whom you’ll be appearing, you can also attend MCLE presentations from attorneys proficient in a specialized area of the law. On March 29th and April 12th, there will be two different MCLE’s on bankruptcy presented by the chairperson of both the State Bar Business Law Section, and Insolvency Law and Business Litigation Committee.

Additionally, I encourage each of you to be on the panel of the Lawyer’s Referral Service (LRS) to assist those underserved in our community. The SCBA matches attorneys who are competent in the area of the potential client’s problem. Attorneys donate the ½-hour consultation to LRS, so that they can get clients. It’s similar to an Uber driver, you can agree to meet with one potential client per month or thirty.

I would also like to give special thanks to the Board for taking away “billable time” from their busy schedules to serve. Duane Nelson, George Rodarakis, Sonya Bouma, Colleen Van Egmond, Betty Julian, Tamie Cummins, Andrea Leavy, and Crystal Swanson are committed to SCBA’s long term financial stability and have all enthusiastically declared that 2019 will be the best year ever! Furthermore, much thanks need to be given to Past President, Mike Dennis, and Executive Director, Deana Skelton, for their support and continued dedication. Being surrounded by such a talented Board will make my job much easier.

Finally, I’m excited about your interest in the association and look forward to hearing any ideas from those who share our passion for improving what our association can do for you. Feel free to personally contact me anytime. I will continue to devote my energy to making you feel proud to be a member, and I hope that the SCBA can be a key to your success.
