Decline Of Athens

As Athens expanded, resentment gathered, creating war between Athens and Sparta.

This was called the Peloponnesian War which lasted from 431 to 404 B.C.

Sparta was victorious while Athens never recovered.

The Historians

In the fourth and fifth centuries B.C. the Greeks made historical writing.

Herodotus searched for the reason for the Persian wars.

Thucydides searched for the reason of Athens power and war against Sparta.

The Greek Philosophers

Socrates was a philosopher who used the philosophy of wisdom.

Plato preserved Socrates’ teachings and he also used philosophy of freedom and conscience.

Aristotle wrote about logic, politics, ethnics, biology, and rhetoric.

The Great Playwrights

Sophocles wrote Antigone Oedipus at Colonus and Oedipus rex

Euripides wrote trojan trilogies The bachae and the phoenician women

Political satire,lysisttrisata The achanians and clouds are written by aristophanes.
