Note from the DirectorGood evening! Welcome (back) to the theatre! We’re thrilled you are here tonight, and we hope these “two hours’ traffic of our stage” provides you space to process, engage and escape.

Ancient Greek tragedies are challenging material to produce. They can feel obtuse and melodramatic to performers, and they often feel disconnected from our modern world. Which is why I was so excited to stumble across Ian Finley’s scripts this summer. Finley’s adaptations, as you’ll soon find out, are accessible and relevant pieces of theatre that I know you’ll enjoy.

In addition, besides the obvious connection between Greek theatre and the outdoors, these plays speak to the power of denial. There are many things we as a society continue to deny about our past and present. Who does denial really serve? And what effect does denial have on future generations?

These plays also capture the need for all of us, including us adults, to be more flexible in our thinking. In Sophocles’ original text, Haemon says to his father, Creon, “You’ve seen trees by a raging winter torrent, / how many sway with the flood and salvage every twig, / but not the stubborn – they’re ripped out, roots and all. / Bend or break.” Our stubbornness can be our downfall, as several characters learn so tragically. We must never stop allowing ourselves to learn and grow, to empathize and bend... or else face the consequences.

Thank you again for being here this evening, and thank you for welcoming me to the Livingston community with open arms. It was such a tremendous pleasure working with your talented students. We have big plans for the theatre program in the years to come.

Enjoy the show. Arête!

Sincerely,Mr. P

Adapter’s Note

When Burning Coal Theatre Company first asked me to adapt OEDIPUS//ANTIGONE in 2016, I was terrified. This was a classic play with one of the most storied adaptations of all time: the great anti-war version written by Jean Anouilh in France during the Nazi occupation. I couldn’t resist the opportunity however, and am so grateful for the chance to grapple with this text.

I have leaned heavily on the exceptional colloquial translations of Peter Meineck and Paul Woodruff, as well as the verse translations of Dudley Fitts and Robert Fitzgerald. I also need to credit Anouilh, from whom I took not only the idea of the pivotal scene between Creon and Antigone, but also the details of the death of Polynices and Eteocles.
