It is probably the color most associated with the month of March. Or maybe you think of green and gold because we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day this month? Or perhaps you think of that orange and black rubber ball bouncing down the court as you scream and cheer for your team during March Madness. Maybe even you think of yellow as we begin Daylight Saving Time and start see a little more sunshine as we approach the warmer months? Maybe the reason we start to see so much color in March is because we are coming out of winter and welcoming spring to linger with us a few months. We leave behind the cold, frigid, and brisk air and usher in bright, warm, fresh, and new air and life in the plants that return to a restored beauty. I simply cannot think of a better time to enjoy the great outdoors than spring! It usually isn’t too hot or too cold. That means spring is a great season to sit on the porch and enjoy some Popsicles or take a walk around the Wise & Well Walking Trail or enjoy a trip with our Activity Department. Anyways, why would you want to stay indoors with such beautiful flowers, trees, and other plants in bloom? Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart. Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art.

From The DESK of JordyAs National Heart Health Month has

now ended it’s important to remembersome general things we can do allyear long to help maintain a healthyheart. Eating fruits, vegetables, wholegrains, and fish while limiting the intakeof salt, processed foods, and saturatedfats helps with maintaining a balanceddiet. Also, increasing physical activitywill help reduce heart disease, lowerblood pressure, and improvecholesterol levels. Some heart fun factsinclude: If you were to stretch out yourblood vessel system it would extendover 60,000 miles. The average heartweighs 1 pound and a man’s istypically 2oz heavier than a woman’sbut a woman’s heart beats slightlyfaster than the male counterpart. MostHeart Attacks happen on a Monday aswell as on Christmas Day. If you wouldlike a few more fun facts or questionsabout heart health see Jordy in Rehab!

COTTAGE CareOne thing we strive to do at Spring

Arbor of Kinston in both our Cottageand Assisting Living activityprogramming is celebrate “national”and “international” days. Forinstance, we celebrate National DogBiscuit Day, National Oreo Day,National Bird Feeder Day,International Pecan Pie Day, and thelist goes on and on.

We decided to do this for a fewsimple reasons. 1) It introduces ourresidents to new activities we maynot be capable of hosting all thetime. 2) It helps us build a sense ofcommunity and oneness within ourSpring Arbor family as we jointogether to celebrate pies and birdsand hot dogs. 3) It helps us offer avariety of different things to cater tothe variety of different people wehave living here. 4) Sometimes thesedays coincide with seasons andholidays and allow us to stayorientated to the times, days, seasons, and holidays. 5) The mostpractical reason we partake in thesedays, however, is that it is simple, great FUN!

Happy National Wear Red Day

FYI

Unlucky IdesEvery year on

March 15, it’s likelyyou’ll hear someonesay, “Beware the idesof March!” So whatare ides, and whyshould we be wary ofthem? In truth, there’sreally nothing to fear:On the AncientRoman calendar,“ides” was simply aword for the halfwaypoint of a monthwhen the full moonusually arrived. However, JuliusCaesar made the idesof March famouswhen he wasassassinated on thatday in 44 B.C. InWilliam Shakespeare’splay about thefamous leader, afortune teller shoutsthe “Beware the idesof March!” warning, sealing the date’sfate as an unluckyomen.

Wise & Well

One of the challenges for senior living communities is helping residents maintain physical strength andto stay engaged in everyday life activities. Inspired by existing HHHunt wellness initiatives, our Senior Livingteam members developed a new wellness program tailored specifically to residents in Spring Arborassisted living communities. The Wise & Well program helps residents keep their brain engaged and theirbody active!

Spring Arbor communities partner with local rehab providers to develop a customized plan for eachresident who wants to participate in the program. What differentiates Wise & Well from other senior livinginitiatives is the local focus and holistic approach that includes physical fitness and core/balancestrengthening, brain fitness, mind/body classes, health education lectures and even games and contestsand fun incentives.

Top priorities for many seniors who participate in Wise & Well include developing core strength andimproving balance and ambulation to help minimize falls. The wellness programming is aboutempowering our residents to stay as independent as possible and in control of their lives.

Since its rollout, Spring Arbor communities have seen the Wise & Well program positively impactresidents and improve resident quality of life. This program has been a life-affirming success, after all, when you feel good, you’re much more likely to be active and involved in the life of your community.

We truly believe it’s how you live that matters and part of enjoying an enhanced quality of life meansstaying active and engaged. For more information on Wise & Well contact Spring Arbor, or even betterjoin us for a Wise & Well activity.
