Iguanas have two eyes on their face and a third eye, called a parietal eye on the top of their head.

This third eye does not see the way normal eyes see. It does recognize changes in light and dark.

Green iguanas are not always green! Some are brown, and in at least on area of South America some are blue.

Iguanas are found in few parts of the world.

Most iguanas live in the southwestern United States, Mexico, Central America, the West Indies, and South America.

A few iguanas are also found on Fiji in the Pacific Ocean. Most of their range is in a tropical zone.

There are 700 kinds of iguanas. The kinds most people keep as pets

are common green iguanas. The name iguana comes from

iwana, which was the word that Caribbean Indians used to describe all lizards. The Spanish explorers translated iwana into iguana and the name stuck.
