Served with the English Army He was captured in Hungary by the Turks, and

enslaved. He killed his master, and escaped to England

in the early 1600s.

on his expedition along the Chickahominy River, and taken to the Algonquin chief Wahunsonacock.

He was imprisoned for losing men on the

unsuccessful Chickahominy expedition. He was soon freed, and became president of

the governing council. In 1609, Smith was badly burned by a

gunpowder explosion. He returned to England the same year,

focused on writing, and died in 1631.
