A HIDDEN GEM IN SOUTH AUSTIN E STY SPA IS A DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH. THE SINGLE room, located within the Morningstar Trading Company in south Austin, has everything an aesthetician needs to create a quiet and serene atmosphere. It is extremely clean with soſt blue walls, tasteful dark brown accents and furniture, soothing music and a single set of aestheti- cian apparatus. But being so small, I have to wonder, is this really a spa? Webster’s New Universal Unabridged Dictionary defines a spa as “any place, especially a resort, having a mineral spring.” Hmm, with that definition, very few Austin establishments that call themselves “spas” really fit the bill. Perusing a variety of online descriptions leads me to conclude that a spa is any establishment that offers massages, facials and/or other body treat- ments in a quiet and relaxing atmosphere. With that in mind, Esty spa cer- tainly lives up to the definition and aesthetician Jessica Nelson, Esty’s owner, has more than enough skill to provide an exceptional spa experience. Nelson established Esty as a sole proprietor in November 2008 aſter working for years as an aesthetician at other spas. “I want to be able to serve the locals,” says Nelson. “I went out on my own because I want to be able to cater to the needs of my clients. If I want to extend their time, I do. If I want to give them a discount, I can. is is frowned upon in business. e policies that make a good business model make it difficult to treat or heal.” Nelson is a licensed facialist, a Reiki practitioner and a licensed hair removal technician or “waxer” (Esty received the Austin Chronicle’s Best Brazilian body wax award for 2008 one month aſter she opened). Al- though Nelson appreciates the recognition for her waxing skills, perform- ing facials is her passion. “First and foremost I am a therapist,” says Nelson. “ere’s a moment dur- ing a facial when I fall in love with my client. ey are so relaxed, lying there with their eyes closed. ey are completely at peace. It is very gratifying to be able to give my clients the love and affection that so many people crave.” I got to experience a lile of that love for myself. Nelson performed a Special Touch facial on me, a facial that combines skin care with Reiki. I didn’t know what to expect, so I climbed up on the table and let Nelson do her thing. Oh my … what a wonderful experience! By their very nature, facials are relaxing, but Nelson truly has a special touch. While it is cus- tomary for aestheticians to massage the neck and shoulders during a facial, Nelson also massages the arms and hands. As someone who spends the beer part of her days tapping away on a computer keyboard, I greatly ap- preciated this special aention given to my hands. Webster’s New Universal Unabridged Dictionary defi nes a spa as “any place, especially a resort, having a mineral spring.” Hmm, with that defi nition, very few Austin establishments that call themselves “spas” really fi t the bill. Nelson established Esty as a sole proprietor in November 2008 aft er working for years as an aesthetician at other spas.

I’d like to say something about Reiki, but because I have never had a Reiki treatment before, I can’t tell if the great sense of calm and re-laxation I felt following my facial was due to the Reiki or just because Nelson is extremely skilled at what she does. But I guess it really doesn’t matt er, because the end result was the same. I received great att ention to my skin, but even bett er att ention to my overall well-be-ing. For a litt le over an hour, Nelson made my peace and tranquility her top priority. Nelson also off ers an Anti-Aging Shiatsu massage facial and has special facial treatments for her male clients.

“I have a lot of male clients,” says Nelson. “It’s nice to see men tak-ing care of themselves and their skin.”

So what’s the future like for Nelson and Esty? One can plainly see that this dynamic young single mother is far more talented than her one room can convey.

“I like to train aestheticians,” says Nelson. “My other business, Austin Radiance, provides advanced education and training to up and coming aestheticians. I mentor aestheticians and do some career coaching as for young aestheticians as they build their careers.”

Nelson is also planning to grow and expand Esty into a full well-ness center.

“I want the wellness center to off er various treatments and relax-ation techniques that represent international spa cultures. I want the focus to be on complete and total relaxation and I want my clients to be able to come in for a daytime retreat and experience something totally diff erent.” Th e something diff erent may come in the way of lingerie. Nelson would like to open up a lingerie spa within her well-ness center.

It is evident that Nelson and Esty spa have only scratched the sur-face of their brilliance. With Nelson’s skill and ability to stay the course towards her goals, I am eager to see what the future holds for her. One day, when Esty is a grand destination, I’ll be able to say, “I knew her when she was just a hidden gem.”
