Overview of the Career

A general contractor is a hard working job that requires dedication. A general contractor is someone who is responsible for the building and outline of a building project. A general contractor also is responsible for organizing materials, equipment, and workers.

Schooling/Training

Most jobs in Contracting require a Associates or Bachelors degree in Construction management. It also requires a $500 license to own a business or work as a General Contractor in California. Most general contractors have experience building also. There are many colleges that have programs in Construction management.

Career Practicality

A typical day would start off checking email and phone for work. Then I would go off to my first job, wherever that is. If they are looking for an outline, I draw it up for the building, then I arrange workers with their job and start building.

Salary $$$

The median salary for a general contractor after 10 years in California is $93,900, but the starting salary is $25,000-50,000 a year. After building your way up in the job, you salary will most likely increase.
