Slide 3 Definitions of Young Adult Films First, that teen film is defined most of all by its audience and, second, that whether comic, angst-ridden or violent, the teen film is as transient as adolescence itself. Slide 26 Young Adult Books from Page to Screen What SHOULD create a good YA film adaptation Books with large and loyal fan bases Removal of nonessential details while preserving the soul; maintaining the themes and emotional ties of the story A crew (writers, director, etc.) that loves and/or respects the original material Avoiding inappropriate comparisons (The next Hunger Games) Bridging generational gaps with timeless issues like courage and good vs. evil Incorporating feedback from existing fanbases: those who have created websites, blogs, trailers, Tweets, etc. Fan fiction is what literature might look like if it were reinvented from scratch after a nuclear apocalypse by a band of brilliant pop-culture junkies trapped in a sealed bunker. The author states You do have to do violence to a book to make it into a screenplay the two mediums are so different, but the alteration is so enormous in this case. Protagonist changed from British to American (to make it different from Harry Potter) Age changed from pre-pubescent 11 to 13 Language and settings changed from lyrical, poetic kaleidoscopic to make the story more action-packed. The director did not like fantasy Slide 37 Cirque Du Freak (2009) $13.8 Mil A young boy, Darren, is transformed into a vampire, causing strife between two groups of vampires.
