The Tuskegee Institute

Founded on July 4th, 1881 by Dr. Booker T. Washington

Called “A Negro Normal School in Tuskegee” under the state

Gained institutional independence under the leadership of B.T. Washington on 1892

First Hospital staffed by all Black professionals

The Tuskegee Airmen

Civilian Pilot Training Program started by the first Black licensed pilot Charles A. Anderson in 1939

U.S. Military segregatedDubbed the 99th Pursuit

Squadron on March 22, 1941 then renamed the 99th Fighter Squadron on May 15th, 1942

Over 2000 Black pilots trained at Tuskegee between 1941 and 1946

Eleanor Roosevelt’s Visit

• The U.S. Military was segregated until 1948.

• ER visited Tuskegeee in 1941 and flew with pilot and instructor Charles Patterson for over and hour.

• Took this photo and used it to urge FDR to support the program and allow the Black pilots to fly for the military

• ER stayed in contact with correspondent Cecil Patterson

Tuskegee Airmen in WWII

• 99th Pursuit Squadron first of its kind

• Flew in over 1500 missions in the war in Europe and North Africa

• Only squadron that failed to lose airmen to enemy fire during WWII
