“Lace!” Where did it come from and what’s it all about?

There are two types of lacework, bobbin and needle, which were first started in the sixteenth century Europe. In the beginning, lace thread was usually made from linen, then metallic gold threads or silk, followed by cotton in the nineteenth century. The types of lace were also usually named after the geographical area where they were made. Some of the premier lace making areas were in France and Italy. It is uncertain when lace was introduced in England, some claim Queen Catherine of Aragon taught lacemaking to people in Ampthill when she was there in 1531 awaiting her divorce from King Henry VIII; a pattern is still used there today which is named after her!

Intricate lacework involved three artists, first the artist who created the design on paper, then the pattern artist who translated the design and thus made the pattern for the third artist, the lace maker who worked with the patterns to create the lace. Lace has always been an expensive “luxury” purchase as its creation takes a lot of time and attention to detail. Fashion changes and trends have driven the changes in lace design throughout the centuries. Both men and women wore lace on their clothes as it adorned their collars, cuffs, over their shoulders, their hands, heads, their entire gown and their furniture as well. It was usually the most expensive part of their outfit. Due to its high value, rules were even put into place to restrict the import of lace and people began smuggling of lace into restricted countries!

From edgings to lappets, parasols, gloves, collars, and dresses, lace may be found everywhere you look. Inconspicuous to bold, finely worked to larger more handleable pieces, I encourage you to admire the sheer amount of work it takes to create these works of art by hand. There are many books and websites that cover the history of lace in more detail in case you are interested to learn more about this fascinating art form!

See you at the June meeting!

Workshops

Hi Members, Thank you to those Guild members who have contacted me with quilt workshop ideas and quilting instructors. I asked for help and so many of you have stepped up front and center! As of now, we do not have Shannon Gingrich Shirley scheduled for a workshop but we certainly would like to have one. Please visit her website [email protected] and look at her workshops. One in particular, "Bottles and Blooms" may be something that would be of interest as a workshop. Please take a look and give me some feedback on the workshop and your level of interest. Thanks! Please continue to bring me your ideas and suggestions. We all have the same interest in common. See you all at the Guild meeting! Marianne Hearsey

June 17, 2019 is our Summer Dinner. It will be catered at a cost of $5 per person. Please make your reservation with

Vicki Pennington at the May meeting. Please bring your block of month quilt blocks and quilts from Sherri’s 2018 block on

month challenge for all to see. What a fun time we have had making our blocks. There will also be table sales of books by the Library as well as Fabrics and notions. Plan for a fun time!

August 19, 2019 -Michelle May from Wilmington, NC of “The Raspberry Rabbit” will be with us to chat and present her trunk show about Folk Art Fusion and her adventures down the rabbit hole. She brings fun and her excitement of her adventures in creativity. She will present a workshop on August 20. This is a fun one for all.

July 15, 2019 - our own Joyce Walton will present a program: ”Find Your Inspiration”. We are fortunate to have so many talented women in our guild who are willing to share their ideas and talent with us.

September 16, 2019- Shannon Gingrich Shirley is an eclectic quilt maker and instructor. In addition to quilt making she's also the author of "Creating Children's Artwork Quilts". Shannon made two small quilts from her grandaughter's drawing as you can see in the pictures. She will be our speaker at our September Guild meeting and will be showing her eclectic trunk show.

Instructor: Joyce Walton, YCQG member Class: Creative Border Piecing Cost: $45 Date and Time June 22, 2018, 9am-3:30pm Location: Harvest Baptist Church

Description: Learn how to machine piece an interesting, colorful quilt border with absolutely no fabric waste. Perfect for beginner and seasoned quilters, this

technique class is great for using up your scraps. This concept could also be

incorporated in the body of a quilt and used over and over for future projects.

Instructor: Michelle May -The Raspberry Rabbits Class: Beekeeper Pincushion class, Play Date Date and Time: August 20, 2019 Member Cost: TBD Location: TBD Kit fee: $35 Description: First, I have five flower designs that are exclusive to my Play Date participants (shown in the photos you have). Each person will receive all five flowers, but choose one for class. Second, I bring over 50 colors of wool felt and over 30 colors of Valdani threads for students to choose from. Third, I bring beads, buttons, ric rac, and yarn that will be used to embellish. We spend the morning purely designing the flowers. I'm your guide down the rabbit hole. The afternoon we design the bee and embellish our flowers in a good old fashioned "stitch and chat" with friends. Students only need to bring two pair of scissors to class. A regular medium size pair and and small, sharp embroidery pair like stork scissors. I've attached a photo of the bunny scissors I sell and use.

SAVE THE DATE ---October 11, 2019 for our AUCTION Fundraiser!!!! Our Auction fundraiser is fast approaching and we are asking all members to help us in some way. We have already have at least 6 new quilts donated to the auction as well as at least one sewing machine and some wonderful fabrics! We are looking for people to put together themed baskets for the auction or to donate new and nearly new items for the auction. It would also be great if we can have a quilted item with each of the items in the live auction. I have an Italian basket planned, and have an idea for a couple more. If you would like to put together a basket and just need an idea, please contact Sherry or me and we will help you out!

We are also looking for people to help us finish some of the quilts that were given to us as quilt tops. If you are willing to help us with bindings or can longarm a quilt for us, please let us know. We also have a kit for a table topper and are looking for someone who could make it up for us.

We have been gifted with 5 antique quilt tops for the auction. A few of them are pictured below, they are a chance to own a bit of history.

Please contact Sherry LaBrie ( [email protected]) or Vicki Donoso ([email protected]) with questions about donations and how you can help!

Create simple drawings that become the pattern for your landscaper quilt. Choose a season to work in and a light source to create a mood and an environment within your quilt.
