Introduction

Introduction

Portable KeyboardsPortable keyboards are typically characterized by lightweight construction, battery operation; a 5-octave key-board with 61 full-sized keys; built-in, self-amplified speakers, and an internal tone generator delivering a large collection of realistic instrument, percussion, and synthesizer sounds; and a large selection of pre-programmed auto-accompaniment styles and rhythm patterns called presets. These allow the player to perform and improvise along with a rhythmic chord progression in a variety of musical genres.

Arranger KeyboardsArranger Keyboards are often used professionally in “one-man-band” or vocalist/keyboard player applications for lounge, wedding, or club-date work. Think of them as hefty, mostly AC-powered luxury Portables, available in 61-, 76- or 88-key versions, with more advanced controllers and features. The keyboard sounds, rhythms, and accompaniment patterns are more sophisticated and often highly-specialized, catering to the musical instrument and style require-ments of a variety of world and ethnic music performers.

Digital PianosAs a continuously developing market, it’s no surprise that digital pianos just keep getting better and better every year. With improved action designs and enhanced speaker systems, these new instruments concentrate on delivering a tru-ly enjoyable piano experience. It’s now easier than ever to take home a great digital piano for a modest price, whether you are buying for a specific purpose or just want to have a piano in the house for everyone to enjoy. Keep in mind that the feel and sound of different models can vary greatly, even from the same manufacturer, so be sure to combine a little hands-on experience with your home research.

Whether you’re planning to purchase a home electronic keyboard for yourself, a child, or an entire family, for educational or entertainment purposes, there’s a baffling array of models to choose from, suitable for a variety of tastes, budgets, and applications. We’re going to simplify your search by dividing the home keyboard category into three groups:

Educational features Metronomes and built-in recorders help improve your playing and composing skills.

PortableKeyboards

Kids/Beginners: Keep it simple. Th e less complex the keyboard feature set, the better for the child. You may want to avoid a touch-sensitive keyboard for very young children because they often do not have enough fi ne motor skills to play consistently, and may become frustrated with a varying dynamic. Th ey’ll love the sound eff ects and the rhythms, and some are even available with lighted keyboards to help make learning fun.

Hobbyists/Home entertainers: A touch-sensitive keyboard and a more complex feature set will help maintain long-term interest. Th ere is a class of piano-oriented portables that come in 76- and 88-key versions, some with weighted or semi-weighted action replicating the feel of “real” acoustic piano keys hitting the hammers. Higher-quality internal speakers, amplifi cation, and more am-bitious learning tools enhance the entertainment value of the instrument and augment music lessons.

Intermediate Level Players: Th e more up-to-date and authentic the sounds, rhythms, and accompaniment patterns, the better. Synthesizer sounds and control knobs, a built-in Arpeggiator (commonly used in Techno, Dance, and Electronica music styles), and USB connectivity will add appeal and fuel user creativity. A larger complement of built-in eff ects like reverb, delay, and cho-rusing will allow for more experimentation and add a richer, more interesting sound to the various presets. Enhanced internal music lesson and chord dictionary features will assist the late bloomer and older novice.

Advanced Players and Professionals: At this point, advanced performance features like pitch bend modulation wheels and real-time control knobs are desirable keyboard enhancements. Higher-end portable key-boards will generally deliver more enhanced features while retaining the same portabil-ity factor found at the entry level. A longer keyboard may be required by more advanced players along with a more versatile, performance-oriented feature set.

Digital Pianos

Console/Portableattractive console models are available to complement any home furnishing arrangement.

digital Pianos

Students/Home entertainers We probably all wish that we could have a real acoustic piano in our homes. In an apartment situation there are considerations of space and volume. If a piano teacher recommends owning your own full-octave, touch-sensitive instrument then an entry- to mid-level in-strument may be just for you.

College music studentsIf your son or daughter is off to music school it is often good to have a personal keyboard as an alternative to crowded practice rooms. Music, and especially music education majors, are usually required to study piano no matter what their main instrument. Orchestral, ensemble, and band arrangements can be worked out at the keyboard. If the keyboard is your major instrument you may want to consider a mid- to upper-level instrument that may also be used in a performance situation for solo and ensemble playing.

Advanced Students/Experienced PlayersIf you already own an acoustic piano and want something for late-night practice or a vaca-tion home, then you also might consider a mid- to upper-level instrument to provide the sound and feel that you are used to. If your home cannot support an acoustic piano, then you will appreciate the extra detail in sound quality and more realistic action an upper-level model can provide. By investing a bit more you will also be able to fi nd console instru-ments that will look elegant in the grandest of homes.

ProfessionalsProfessional stage pianos represent the best combination of sound quality, pianistic feel, durability, and portability. Many of these models do not include built-in speakers, as they are meant to be connected to a stage or studio audio system, so you will need external amplifi cation or headphones. Th ey are also free of extraneous bells and whistles in exchange for providing excellent performance control and MIDI system integration.

Internal Speakers/Amplifi cationWide-range speakers are well-suited for repro-ducing the complex tones of the piano.

Keyboard ActionWeighted and semi-weighted action key-boards simulate the feel and response of a “real” acoustic piano.

Touch/Velocity SensitivityWell-designed touch response will enhance individual playing technique.

Sound QualityIncreased onboard sample memory allows for greater accuracy of acoustic piano reproduction.

MIDIThe Musical Instrument digital Interface allows your piano to be a master controller for multi-instrument and computer sequencing purposes.

Educational/Convenience Featuresdual headphone outputs, metronomes, and built-in recorders enhance the educational process.

12

Sound Quality and ActionSound quality is prob-ably the most impor-tant factor to consider when purchasing a digital piano. Th e extra memory and sampling techniques used to at-tain richer and more

detailed tones are usually refl ected in the price. However, the keyboard action combined with the sound of the instrument is really what gives a digital piano its character. Th e most pristine sound quality combined with sub-standard keyboard action will not make for very satisfying playing experience and vice versa. A well-designed digital piano inspires you to keep playing by off ering a good balance of tone and playability.

Keyboard Action Th e action on an acoustic piano is composed of mov-ing parts, and recre-ating the feel of this mechanism is a big task. Depending on the type of instru-ment that you choose, you may come across one of three types that are used in an electronic keyboard:

1. Unweighted– an organ-type feel with very little weight resistance.

2. Semi-Weighted– a weighting mechanism is employed to provide a more solid feel than an unweighted keyboard. Th is can be as simple as small weights placed inside or underneath the keys themselves.

3. Fully-Weighted/Hammer Action– off ers solid re-sistance through various combinations of weights and springs for a more realistic feel. Hammer ac-tion replaces springs with various types of simu-lated piano hammers to add even more realism.

4. Graded/Progressive– when playing an acoustic piano, lower notes off er more key resistance than higher notes. Graded or progressive action, (dif-ferent companies may use other terms), simulates this characteristic across the keyboard.

Touch/Velocity sensitivityTh e piano was devel-oped as an answer to the limitations of an earlier popular keyboard in-strument: the harpsi-chord. Th e harpsichord played at one volume level, while the piano al-lowed volume expression by playing harder or softer on the keyboard.

Internal Speakers/Amplifi cation Portable keyboards come equipped with built-in amplifi ed speakers. Th e better the speakers, the bet-ter the keyboard will sound. Th is is an important consideration, particularly if the keyboard purchase is geared toward family entertainment. Most home-oriented digital pianos come equipped with built-in speakers. Just sit down, turn on the power, and start playing! Stage models may or may not include speak-ers so you will have to consider an external amplifi -cation system. For the best results, full-range speak-ers are a must.

Eff ects Processors Built-in sound eff ects like reverb and echo will always add size and depth to the sound of the keyboard. Most porta-bles off er at least reverb, even at the entry level,

and for professional use, eff ects processing is very often an important performance component.

MIDI Th e Musical Instrument Digital Interface connec-tors located on most por-table keyboards allow for their use as a controller

Page 13: BUYING - B&H Photo · 2014-08-07 · ly enjoyable piano experience. It’s now easier than ever to take home a great digital piano for a modest price, whether you are buying for a

instrument for other MIDI-enabled instruments and devices. It also serves as an interface connection to a computer, opening the door to a host of recording, arranging and teaching software. Plus, inexpensive portables can be perfect for entering notation data.

Auto-AccompanimentOne key feature that sets the portable and ar-ranger keyboards apart from most digital pianos is their ability to sound like a one-man band. All you have to do is choose a musical style and tem-po and the internal computer will f ill in full bass, drum, and chordal accompaniment that will follow the notes that you play on the keyboard. Sophisticated arrangers offer more detailed and varied performance options as well as a bigger selection of styles and onboard sounds for more realistic results. You can also play along with the drum patterns alone, which is great for making song practice and music writing much more fun and interesting.

Console/Portable If you think that you will not be moving your digi-tal piano very much and would prefer a more con-ventional wooden look in your living room, then you should consider one of the many console in-struments available. Lighter and more portable models allow you to move, store, or travel with relative ease.

Educational/convenience features Headphone outputs al-low you to play or prac-tice anytime without disturbing others, and some models support two so that both teacher and student can listen together. Some have the ability to split the key-board so that the student and teacher are playing in the same range for easier instruction.Onboard metronomes keep you playing in time and built-in recorders let you listen back to your perfor-mance or play one part against another to improve your skills. Many portable models offer some type of graduated lesson program, augmenting music lessons for virtually any instrument.

Accessories A set of headphones will allow for practicing or composing any time the mood strikes, and a proper stand is highly recommended if your unit does not already include one. Makeshift support may not place the keyboard or your body at

a comfortable height and can lead to poor performance technique, and make playing awkward. A double-braced X-stand or Z-stand will keep the piano from vi-brating and a good bench will have you sitting comfortably.

PedalsAlthough most electronic console models come equipped with three ped-als that simulate those found on an acoustic piano, it is common for portable and stage models to support the use of at least two types. Damper/Sustain– a sustain pedal simulates the righthand damper pedal on an acoustic piano. It al-lows the notes to ring even after a key has been re-leased.Soft– the left-hand pedal softens the piano’s tone allowing you to play extremely quiet passages with greater ease.Sustenuto– the middle pedal allows you to sustain only select notes.

CaseIf you are going to be trans-porting your portable key-board, it is a good idea to pro-tect your investment with a protective case. If your piano is relatively lightweight and you are only stowing it away in your home or planning for simple travel, then a pad-ded bag or lightweight case might be all you need. For trips that may cause you to pack your instrument among heavier objects, or for more constant moving, you will want to consider a more protective hard case.
