Question: I have several CCTV cameras, and would like to connect them all to the same computer. how can I do this?

Answer:Use a CCTV capture card. CCTV capture cards can handle up to 16 CCTV camera connections. Such capture cards also come with software that will enable you to view multiple camera captures at the same time. Some software even allows you to have remote access to another pC over the internet. Alternatively, you can use a cost-friendly USB-plug type connector that can connect 4 CCTV cameras to one USB plug.

Question: I print a lot of colour printouts such as pictures taken on my digital camera, thus I use a lot of printer ink. I have heard that refill kits are a cheaper alternative to buying new printer ink cartridges. please advise if this is true, and how does it work?

Answer:It is true that printer ink refill kits will save you a lot of money in the long run. Not only that, refill kits are also more environmentally-friendly than buying new print cartridges. It is very simple

to use an ink refill kit. Simply purchase an ink refill kit that is compatible with your printer model and follow the instructions in the instruction manual, or pick up tips from the shop you buy the refill kit from. You may wish to use disposable plastic gloves when refilling your cartridge to avoid messy stains. Also remember that you must never place a leaking print cartridge back into your printer – always check for leaks before replacing after a refill.

Question:I’m looking for a new audio/video player and have come across the term “Blu-ray” a lot. What is the difference between a Blu-ray player and a DVD player?

Answer:Blu-ray is the high-definition successor of DVD. When used with a high-Definition TV, Blu-ray delivers about five times more detail and clarity than DVD. Blu-ray audio quality is also superior to DVD. Furthermore, Blu-ray discs can store 10 times more data than a DVD, thus Blu-ray movie discs often come packed with more features such as more language and audio options, commentary, games, trailers, interviews etc. If you are someone who appreciates superior video and audio quality when watching a movie, you should definitely opt for a Blu-ray player over a DVD player. Most Blu-ray players can also playback DVDs.

Question:I love listening to music on

my Mp3 player while exercising at the gym. however, I face two

When Shopping at Sim Lim SquareWHICH SHOP TO BUY FROM? Make informed buying decisions and get the best deals! Always shop around and

compare prices before making a purchase.

Look out for STAretailers when you shop. STAretailers guarantee fair pricing and good service.

Look out for shops that are the authorized dealers for certain brands. These shops would have direct contact with dealers of major brands such as Sony,

Canon and JVC. Thus, they are often able to provide the most accurate product information and best warranties.

IS YOUR PRODUCT IN GOOD ORDER?Always test your products before leaving the shop. Take your time to ensure that all the promised accessories and peripherals are inside the box.

Always check voltage compatibilities of the products that you buy to ensure that they can be used back home. In Singapore, the voltage is 220 – 240 volts AC, 50 cycles per second. If voltage requirements differ, you may need to get an adaptor.

Always check that mobile phone bandwidths and audio/visual equipment formats are compatible with that of your home county.

Always remember to obtain and keep receipts for your purchases. Make sure that the receipt clearly states the items

you are purchasing. Should you find that your product is faulty, you would need to have the original receipt in order to make

MRTThe Mass rapid Transit (MrT) in Singapore is a modern, air-conditioned passenger train service with stations all over the island. Trains operate from 6am to midnight daily. Train fares range from SGD 0.80 to SGD 1.80. You may purchase a train ticket from any MrT station using cash, or you may choose to pay your MrT and bus fares with a stored value ez-link card. The card may be bought or revalued at any TransitLink Ticket Sales Office located in most MrT stations and bus interchanges. Each adult card is sold with a minimum value of SGD 10 plus a deposit fee of SGD 5. The ez-link card can also be used for public buses. You can obtain a copy of A Quick Guide to MRT Travel from the Station Control rooms in all MrT stations. For more information on both the MrT and bus services, visit publicTransport@SG website (http://publictransport.sg) or you can refer to the TransitLink Guide which is available at SGD 2.50 in most MrT stations and bus interchanges as well as at major bookstores.

SMRT LINk SMrT Link, is a free shuttle bus service that makes it more convenient and cheaper for you to travel to Chinatown, Dhoby Ghaut and Little India. Shoppers travelling on the East West and North South MrT lines can hop on board SMrT Link for free direct connection to major shopping belts within the three areas. The shuttle buses run every 8 to 15 minutes from 11am to 10pm on weekends and public holidays.

Getting Around

SingaporeTravelling around Singapore is a cinch! An efficient public transportation network of taxis, buses and the modern Mass rapid Transit (MrT) rail system ensures that getting from point A to point B is hassle-free and extremely affordable.

BUSESpublic bus services operate from 6am to midnight daily. Bus fares range beween SGD 0.70 and SGD 1.90, depending on the distance travelled. If you are paying by cash, the exact fare is required. If you are unsure about the exact bus fare to your destination, do check with the bus driver.

For maximum freedom, buy an ez-link card and hop onto a bus! The ez-link card can also be used on the Mass rapid Transit (MrT). SBS Transit bus number 36 runs between Orchard road and Singapore Changi Airport. The public bus stations are located in Terminal 1 at Basement 2, and in Terminal 2 at Basement Level. SIA HOP-ONWhat better way to zip about town to visit the places of interest than on the SIA hop-on bus? Visitors can get unlimited air-conditioned rides that will take them to over 20 of the most popular attractions in the City. The bus will stop at major shopping malls and hotels such as raffles City, Singapore Botanic Gardens and Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay as well as ethnic enclaves like Chinatown, Little India and Arab Steet. passengers can get on and off whenever they want. The city service operates daily between 9am and 9pm at 30-minute intervals. The Sentosa Shuttle Service runs at 90-minute intervals between 10am and 8pm. Visitors on SIA Singapore Stopover holiday travel for free and Singapore Airlines or SilkAir passengers pay SGD 6 for adults and SGD 3 for children for an unlimited day pass. TAXISTaxis can be flagged down 24 hours a day on most roads, with well-marked taxi-stands available outside most major shopping centres and hotels. The initial flag down fare starts between SGD 2.80 and SGD 3.00, which covers the first km. The fare then rises SGD 0.20 for every 385 metres covered

Money MattersMoney ChangersAlways look for licensed money changers when changing foreign currency (look out for the sign “Licensed Money Changer”). These money changers usually give better rates than most hotels and banks. Such money changers may be found at the Singapore Changi Airport and most shopping centres. Do check foreign exchange rates and refrain from changing foreign currency with unlicensed operators.

Banks & ATMsBanks usually remain open from Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 3pm. Some banks may also open on Sundays. Do check your bank’s website for the most updated operating hours. Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) are available 24-hour. They are located at banks, shopping centres, petrol stations, convenience stores and MrT stations. If you want to check if the ATM allows you to draw from a foreign bank account, look out for the pLUS and CIrrUS signs on the machine.

Credit Cards / Charge CardsMost stores in Singapore accept major credit cards such as VISA and MasterCard, at no extra surcharge.

TaxesMost retails outlets charge the prevailing GST (Goods and Service Tax) on purchases. Most restaurants, hotels and F&B outlets quote prices with “+” or “++”. “++” refers to a 10% service charge and 7% GST. Tourists may be entitled to a GST refund under certain conditions. please call the tourist hotline at 1800 736 2000 to enquire.

TippingTipping is not a common practice in Singapore as most hotels and restaurants include a 10% service charge in the final bill. While tipping is not expected, it is appreciated, be it in restaurants where there is no service charge, or anywhere where excellent service is encountered.

Tax MattersAdvisory on the Tax System in SingaporeThe Government of Singapore has imposed a tax scheme known as the Goods & Services Tax (GST)) which is pegged at a rate of 7% of a product’s price. The GST applies to all goods imported into Singapore. Travellers who are not holders of a work permit, employment pass, student pass, dependent pass or long-term pass, will be given a GST refund on new articles, souvenirs, gifts and food preparations excluding intoxicating liquors and tobacco. All tourist shoppers who leave Singapore via Changi International Airport or Seletar Airport may be eligible for GST refund on goods purchased under the Tourist refund Scheme (TrS). Tourist shoppers are advised to make the tax refund prior to leaving the country through an application to be made to the Singapore Customs with an endorsement. Application forms can be requested from the shop retailer. Tourists are advised to ask the retailer if they are participating in the TrS prior to their purchase if they wish to claim the GST refund.
